I will see what I can do to expand the forces. Had I known the demand I would have been re-basing for weeks.

I will be there after my long (puppy related) absence. I see all the player slots are already filled but if nobody minds I'm happy to watch and learn rules.

I believe I pass by on route 60 on my way in.  It shouldn't be more than a slight detour. I think I can take Gilbert exit from 60 to Guadalupe and then Guadalupe to your house, Bob.  If I can get an address, I will program in the GPS and find it.  Mark needs his game fix (so do I).

Forgot to say - maybe schedule a Grand Opening Day of Sylvain's Gaming Room for one of those Off Saturdays, and have a discussion then with those who attend as to what the best plan is?

I have no desire to compete with the Mesa events. I see the north Phoenix / carefree events as extra possibilities to try smaller game. I will still attend the Bob room. Best gaming room I have ever seen.

I like the inauguration party idea from John :-)

Sounds great Dan. From what I've read in reviews the rules are 'red vs. blue,' as there are no national characteristics, so learning them should be pretty easy. Looking forward to the game and having a go with or at Alte Fritz!

As an FYI general mechanics for the rules “King of the Battlefield.” By Ian Godwin. The rules are very straightforward and played at the Central London Wargames Club.

Obviously I will go through them and hand out simple charts. This is an attacking game.

1)

Each “unit” is 3 bases. They are in line (deployed) or they are in column.

2nd Class = takes 1 hit

Elite or 1st class = takes 2 hits

Guard = takes 3 hits

Hits come pretty fast so expect some evaporation of units. You will want 2nd and 3rd lines.

2) sequence

One side moves all its units.

Then only the other side receives shooting and tests. So moving first into firing range gives the aggressor not the defender first shot.

Then any melees triggered by charges are resolved.

3)

Infantry in line move 4” and shoot 6”

Infantry in column beyond 10” of enemy moves 10” so you can redeploy.

Cavalry moves/charges 10” or 12” (hussars)

Artillery shoots 24”

No test to move: Cavalry moves straight or by wheels; Infantry straight, wheel, incline 45 degrees.

Test to change formation or turn to face or charge.  So you have to test to come out of column, which happens most of the time.

4)

Modifiers. Almost every modifier is a negative to you test.

Being Attacked, being shot by many people, being attacked by better troops, etc.

About the only modifiers that all you to survive is infantry in line, meeting cavalry and a general fighting (and at risk).

Cavalry charging infantry is high risk. Infantry is strong. About 1/3 that the Cavalry win. The 2/3rds often results in the cavalry getting roughed up or lost.

5)

Melees can be very fluid in two ways.

If you win and rout the foe, your pursue and everyone you hit, you fight immediately. So a fortunate player can cut through the enemy army. Once I had an enemy lead a large mass of cavalry with his worst unit. I overran it and that cascading battle took out his entire wing. He never deployed that way again.

Cavalry battles have the ability to be reinforced, in turn, by each side. So two great masses from each army can be sucked into a giant Gotterdammerung.

Just when you get used to melee’s being decisive, they won’t be. Also it take prompting to charge.

When you rout, you will move back a variable distance and force tests from those you pass through. Then the unit evaporates. So you can’t be too densely packed. Too much space and your reserves can’t support. Too little space and your 2nd line is disrupted by the first breaking.

So if we set up the board right. You will be struggling to get all your units into position to fight, thinking it’s a bit crowded and they lumber too slowly into position. Then casualties mount, and your 1st line is gone and your 2nd line is ragged and you will be wondering why you don’t have 3rd and 4th lines.

As I said I will go over everything and its easy.

Sylvain,

Congratulations on your new gaming room!

I cannot commit to regular attendance - on call for work, professional meetings, vacations, etc. - but will try to attend from time to time, whatever schedule you set up.   I think the Off Saturdays (i.e. ones not regularly scheduled at Mesa) might be the way to go.

Friday or Saturday nights.

If Saturday then please try not to compete with games at my house. Just put the games on the calendar and we’ll be able to coordinate.
