Re: Today’s battle
Buffed up Coats worked out despite early skepticism by ill informed louts such as me!
Have to admit grumbling partly caused by Dave R. more or less rolling me under the table ( at one point 3 snake-eyes follow by a "3"!!! - low numbers are bad!). The dice gods really had it in for me today. Fortunately my colleague Seth broke the heretics' center and the Covenanters were in decline on their right so the game was called in favor of the good guys, i.e. Montrose's happy few!
The first 3 photos are of "vignettes" that Bob painted up.
The one by the pier is of the traditional testing to see if someone was a witch - by repetitive dunking. If they survived then they obviously were a witch. If they drowned then apparently they were not a witch - which of course came as a great consolation to the dead non-witch!!
After discussion we are going to try an Ancients game using Tactica II the Saturday after thanksgiving, Nov. 30th.
Romans vs. Carthaginians. Am going to post it if I can work out how to use the calendar..........

Today’s battle
Some of the action in today’s ECW battle. Montrose’s Royalists trounced the Covenanters. History repeated.

The other option is Indianapolis and a rental car. May be cheaper than Chicago. Last year I played in a WSS, Great Northern War, an India scenario and F&IW with some great people. Also ate and drank well.

Was just scolded for forgetting that my daughter's birthday party is on the 16th. (Her birthday is the 4th) so I won't be able to make it next Saturday, but will be available on the 23rd for whatever event there shall be!

Re: 37th Seven Years War Convention
I have gone for many years and can also attest to being a fine convention. All 18th century (WSS to FRW) but the majority of the games are Seven Year's War. Fly into Chicago and rental car to South Bend (Flying direct to South Bend is expensive, although Allegiant apparently has flights, but not every day). JC

37th Seven Years War Convention

I attended for the first time last year although I have friends who were founders. It was great fun, great games and conversation--and South Bend has some very nice food and drink establishments.

Reminder: And Now For Something Completely Different: The Great Paraguayan War (also known as the War of the Triple Alliance) When: Saturday, 9 November 2019, 12:00pm to 5:00pm, (GMT-07:00) America/Phoenix Where:Bob's War Room An RSVP is requested. Click here to RSVP Organizer: Michael Machell madmachell@... 785-550-4050 Description: This is a fairly obscure South American conflict occurring around the same time as the American Civil War, ultimately resulting in the utter annihilation of the Paraguayan nation. The megalomaniac dictator of Paraguay, Francisco Solano Lopez, took on the combined armies of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay over a territorial dispute involving the two larger countries. The Paraguayan army outnumbered the armies of the other combatants at the start of the war and enjoyed some initial successes, but after a naval defeat by Brazil on the Parana River at the Battle of the Riachuelo, was very much on the defensive for the majority of the war. Despite being outnumbered, the Paraguayan soldiers - mostly indigenous Guarani - were incredibly tenacious fighters and wholly loyal to Lopez. As an additional "incentive", Lopez threatened the old Roman practice of "decimation" (killing one of every ten men) for any unit that retreated in battle. As a result, there was only one recorded instance of a routed Paraguayan unit running away from battle during the war. This war is an interesting mix of Napoleonic and American Civil War-type weapons and tactics with some of the Paraguayan units even fighting with spears! The figures are 15mm scale. I plan to use rules adapted from Neil Thomas "Wargaming 19th Century Europe" although "Black Powder" works very well for this conflict. There are also versions of rules for this period using "Fire and Fury" and "Principles of War" although I have not played those.
