Michael M (New Mike)
Unfortunately, my wife tested positive for COVID. The first test a few days ago was negative, but the one she took a few days ago was positive. She's recovering and her symptoms are starting to subside, but she is still fatigued. She said it is kind of like a really, really bad cold. I don't have any symptoms and haven't tested. I feel fine and am probably okay, but I don't want to risk infecting club members, so I'll have to sit this Saturday out. Some of you know that I've been doing some consulting for a healthcare company. The word I'm hearing from our clinical folks is that there is a new dominant variant in Europe that is more communicable than Omicron but less severe than Delta. Our CEO and her husband recently returned from the U.K., and both came down with it. Both of them were fully vaccinated, but apparently the new variant is showing resistance to the vaccines. It's expected to become more dominant in the U.S. over the next month or so rather than the fall when another wave was already expected. I don't want to freak anyone out and I am not making a political statement, but the advice I received was to go back to masks when in public places or around groups of people. We may eventually be looking at another round of vaccines for those so inclined. Fun times. Michael Machell madmachell@...

Dropped by the site of Game Depot in Tempe at Southern and McClintock yesterday.
All gone except for small sign over the door that still says "Game Depot"
GD did Flames of War and Bolt Action lately. I think it previously had a wider range of miniatures.
Also did a comprehensive range of boardgames.
A poster on the window said a store called (from memory) "Ahortiagames" would be opening there in Fall 2022.
Adverts for Warhammer and Magic the Gathering suggest there will be little or no historical miniatures.
No idea whether there will be boardgames or not.

Re: Fernando Enterprises
Neil Graber
Bob, Thanks for putting together a painting order. For years, Al used to place painting orders for those of us on the West Side. I have roughly 100 15mm Marlburian infantry to submit and might also have a few 25/28mm figures too. Total numbers will depend on how many I can get prepped by the deadline. Thanks, Neil

I have been asked by a couple members about putting together another club painting order. Our usual painting service has been Philgreg. However, they appear to have gone out of business. So, I'm considering sending an order to Fernando this time. Here's their link: https://miniaturelovers.com It has always been best to send at least 1,000+ figures in order to keep the overall 'per-painted-figure", plus postage, costs down. There also appears to be a 10% discount on large orders over $300. I can send close to seven hundred 10mm figures, and maybe a small number of various other figures in 15mm and 28mm scales. I will work out what everyone's costs will be ahead of sending the order. Cost will include the painting, plus a pro-rated portion of the postage based on your portion of the weight of the package. They require payment up front so I will collect before we send the order. Hoping to get the order ready to send by mid-July (flexible if necessary). That would mean that I should have your figures and uniform painted samples or pictures in the next couple weeks so Fernando can give us the price. Once we get the price, I'll calculate your individual costs and you can pay your portion, or you'll have one last chance to back out. But, if someone backs out it will require a recalculation of the postage percentages for everyone else. So say you're interested only if you're serious please. Turn-around should be around 3-4 months. Who else is interested in getting some of your dead-lead painted ? Bob

Re: Interesting article on Air Power lessions from the Ukraine War
Perhaps but the Wild Weasal (AAA interditcion) capabilities of our Air Force and Navy so thoroughly outclassed any other force on the planet it's mind boggling. Even 30 years ago, during Operation Desert Shield, our systematic destruction of Iraqi air defense was so surgical it reads like a training exercise. There's a YouTube channel called The Operations Room that did an awesome in depth video on the efforts taken to both ground the Iraqi Air Force while simultaneously destroying all their on ground AAA and radar sites, and this was before the majority of our aircraft were stealth capable. US Air assets are an absolute unmatched beast in the world, and there isn't an air force on earth that comes even remotely close. That doesn't even get into our capabilities of dropping a Tomahawk or a drone launched cruise missile on a radar or SAM site anywhere in the world by a dude with a joystick in Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

Interesting article on Air Power lessions from the Ukraine War
The basic thesis is that Russia has been unable to establish air superiority over Ukraine. Instead the Ukrainian airspace is contested, even though Russia has a much more numerous and up-to-date air force. The idea is that the S-300 surface to air missiles the Ukranians already have, have taken out a number of Russian planes, forcing them to fly low level. That in turn makes them vulnerable to anti-aircraft guns and to the man-fired Stingers, etc. which the West has donated. Until now the orthodoxy about air superiority is you destroy the enemy air force, and have complete control of the skies. This has been doctrine since WW1 from the British Hugh Trenchard, then the US Billy Mitchell and the Italian Giulio Douhet. Air superiority has meant that you deny the enemy the ability to fly, while being able to fly unrestricted yourself. Now this war has undermined that approach, which is a big problem for Western and other powers who have based their approach on having a powerful air superiority air fleet. Interesting..... They carry a small amount of Warlord stuff and Fantasy Flight Star Wars: Armada, X-Wing, etc.
