Extender for servicing TM500 plugins

Hi all:
I think I need to make an extender so I can access and 'probe'' a live plugin...outside of the TM503 frame.
Would this be the Ebay item to do it, along with some 18 awg hookup wire jumpered to a dbl sided etched PCB as a card edge connector?

That is not the correct connector.

The 500 series uses 56 pin (28 x 28) on 0.156 pitch contacts.

See this item:

The Jamma store seems to be offline right now but check it for connectors and boards.

There may be a member of this group that sells these jumpers and they might follow up this post..

It depends upon your mainframe, but I was able to troubleshoot a module recently by removing the top and bottom panels from it and the module sides. With only a single module installed roughly in the center, this gave me enough access.

The next challenge is how tightly packed some of the modules are.

Good luck.

Hi Ancel,
The TM501 is ideal for troubleshooting a TM500 plugin. The case comes off in
one piece and it gives you access to all sides of a plugin. I went one step
further and removed most of the bottom chassis of one of my TM501s so I
could literally get to every part of a plugin. The case is all you really
need to remove. TM501s are cheap too - much cheaper than a TM500 extension
cable.

I have a TM501 for just this purpose although I suspect a TM503 would
work just as well or even better.

An extender works much better of course.

I should consider doing that to my TM501 since that is about all I use
it for. I am going to test using a TM503 though first to see if it
provides better access when just the center slot is used.

Hi,

Do a search on ecosensory. John usually has kits. The connectors on Ebay sometimes are too narrow to accept the thickness of tm500 cards.

John Griessen, who is a member on this forum, makes, or made, kits of
PCBs and pre-cut wires for assembling extenders for use with Tektronix
TM-5xx plug-ins (he also does the same for Tektronix 7xxx plug-ins). If
he has the parts on hand to make up a lit, he'd probably be willing to
to sell you one or two (it is useful to have two when working on
double-wide plug-ins). I have built a couple and used them to repair
plug-ins.

The PCBs are well thought-out and nicely fabricated.

I took Dennis' advice as a I got a TM501 incl. a PS503A for $55 incl shipping.
The extender kits varied from $36 DIY up to $90 for different models.

Thx all.

I have 2 new jammaboard tm-500 series extenders -- contact me if interested. I thnk their store is permanently closed.

Someone, David, I think advised me to use a TM501 as the testbed rather than an extender.

He couldn't be more correct. I got a TM501 including a PS503A for $54. The PS503A needed a bit of servicing but is fine now and the TM501 was 100%.
Since then (2 months go) I have calibrated & repaired a DC505A and a SG504 with the TM501.

Extenders offer a bit more flexibility I think, but nothing very significant compared to an extra TM501.
