Thank you, garbage fairy!

I was walking to the grocery store and I found a Combibind on the sidewalk with the recycling...

That's crazy, they still sell 'em for hundreds... Took it home, wiped off the rain, blew in warm air from the vacuum cleaner, I now have a fully working binder thing for those plastic combs that hold Tek manuals together!!

I no longer have to go to the university paper store to re-bind the occasional manual!

Yay!!!

I'd get inside the machine and lightly oil and wipe down the punches and punch plate before rust makes then unusable!  Some day you'll have to copy and repunch a bad page before re-binding!

Subject: [TekScopes] Thank you, garbage fairy!

from Tim P (UK)

I once rescued a tangled mass of BNC cables that someone probably didn't fancy untangling, and, buried in this rats-nest were two P6062B probes ! (Both work - no cable breaks.)

I was walking to the grocery store and I found a Combibind on the sidewalk with the recycling...

Yay!!!

Over the years I too have had some wonderful gifts bestowed on my by the garbage fairy.

Most recently a wonderful little SONY DVD player. Just a tiny bit of cleaning and an USD 8.00 remote off of eBay and the little guy works great!

Many years ago my best find ever was an HP-54501A, 100MHz DSO. Perfect physical and operational condition - and it still works just fine.

Somehow, for a mystical creature capable of such wonderful gifts Garbage Fairy seems harsh and unfavorable. Perhaps we can find a better name!

Regards,

Ken

Years ago, I attended an auction at the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base when they were closing it down.  A 50KVA UPS system came up and I was the only bidder.  It was a $4500 unit and I got it for $50.  I don't think anyone else there even knew what it was.  Of course, the government has wised up about that, (one of the rare cases where such a thing actually happens).  Auctions are now handled by a third party and advertised nationally.George

Sometimes it happens
And years ago I was asked by a friend to bid on a large box of audio cables and microphones
from an Exploration office which had closed down. Got the boxful for A$5
There was some coax cables there too so had a look through...found a sealed cardboard
box with Hp logo..opened and found a brand new unused still current model 1803A var offset 40Mhz plug in
for a 180 series scope! Offered my friend the full A$5 just for this, but he gave it to me as he couldn't use it.
Think the retail value at that time was around $4k Should have sold it, but the find made me pay an extra $750 for a 2nd
hand 180A scope (Mil AN/USM-281A) just so I could use it! (both still work)
Ahhh, the silliness of youth!!!

On the auction sale of box of cables just posted
Oops, Read wrong list......... Price of 1803A in 1977 was US$1760 , not $4,000)
Still good for $5 though
Sorry
