Re: Passive Scope Probe Tip Assembly Replacement

Brian,

Thanks for the info. I guess I am SOL. The options appear to be a) buy from Allied Electronics for $49 + shipping (before their supply is exhausted) or b) buy another complete P6137 probe with a good probe tip on eBay for even more $$.

That's a steal compared to this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tektronix-knob-366-1400-01-Vertical-Sensitivity-5000-Series-oscilloscopes/271903057877 This guy is trying to sell one 5000 series knob for $8800. There's another guy trying to sell 10 pcs of the same knob for 12.50 w free shipping

Some of you have probably noticed this on eBay by now. It is a 555 indicator unit, you have to provide your own cable and power supply. It is priced at a very reasonable $4750 US plus tax, license and shipping. However the tubes are included (apparently). Or you could buy say a pretty decent used car, or take the Mrs on a Caribbean cruise. Sorry if I am laughing too loud.

Or you could take the wife on a Panama canal cruise, Princess Cruises, Crown Princess, 10 day cruise.

And you'd still have to buy the power supply (sold separately).

The cruise has sip and sail, a premium beverage package....

It's included, rather than the power supply, which isn't.

I'd rather go on a cruise, all due respect to a 555.....

Re: Passive Scope Probe Tip Assembly Replacement

Hi , I have just been in the same situation needing probe tips . I think you will find that using that part , compensating the probe will be very difficult if not impossible as the lower capacitance suggests that the cable is lower capacitance . For a X10 probe , tip capacitance X10 is approximately the cable and scope input capacitance . Best of luck finding a replacement tip , if you find any for the P6135A , I'd love to hear about it

Is anyone out there knowledgeable about probe tip assemblies?

I have a Tektronix P6137 which uses probe tip assembly 206-0378-00 (10X; 11.8 pF; 9M ohm).  I am looking for an affordable tip replacement but haven't found any.  I am considering using Caltest CT3667 (equivalent to 206-0441-00) as a substitute.  Specs for CT3667/206-0441-00 are:10X; 8 pF; 9M ohm.  I am assuming both tips have the same dimensions (both are 3.5 mm probe tips, and pictures I've seen online for both appear virtually identical other than the color of the tip end).

What kind of trouble will I have if I pursue this substitution?  I am hoping I can simply screw in a CT3667 and adjust compensation for this substitution.

The CT3667 will not compensate in a P6137 as is.  I've tried it. Works fine in a P6139A.

Hi,

I just posted a new query elsewhere on this board with similar thoughts: can I use a CT3667 (206-0441-00 equivalent) used in P6139A to replace a 206-0378-00 used in a P6137?

Re: 7904 with vertical problem

Hi, quite possible that you have an oscillation here. If so something is broken. What you can do is to measure all DC voltages in this amplifier and compare with the schematic. If you find unexpected voltage levels it would be an indication of instability and oscillation. You can also poke around with a wet fingertip and check if the noise would disappear at some point.

Re: 7904 with vertical problem

Dennis Turner

I know this is a very old thread. My venerable 7904, low serial number, has developed an issue with the vertical output amp. The signal to the plates has a band of high frequency noise about 1 division wide. I think this is an oscillation in the video output stage as it does not appear in the input to the output chip U745. Does this sound correct? Is there a procedure to trim this oscillation out? I see many of the components in the video compensation area are selected so replacing the chip (ebay $50 plus shipping) may not be the answer. I'm afraid getting the vertical working is beyond my capability. I'm a retired electronics engineer but with little analog experience in the digital age.
This scope also has power supply problems with the inverter startup circuit, it delays startup sometimes for minutes after long power off but is not in pulse mode. I have ordered the caps in that area so this should be an easy fix. In addition the readout is inoperative. No pulses out of the timer chip so no readout video at all. I can live no readout as long as it is not effecting the vertical. Any thoughts?

The manual for the 453A is available at ko4bb.com. I believe that the 453A-1 is similar.
