Armchair Airlines Computer Services Inc. is me!

It started out as just Armchair Airlines in the early 1980's, a videogame
software company that I co-founded. Perfect name for a videogame company,
isn't it? :-)

Games is a hard way to make a living, so we turned into a business software
company in the late 80's. We also made and sold one game, a business
simulation as an adjunct to a highschool textbook. It was apparently
somewhat successful, but for various reasons we never got any royalties.

It kept me and some colleagues gainfully employed all through the 90's,
then I retired from it in the early 2000's but kept the name.

Now it's just me.

I found my problem and now its working.
No, I did not ask how it sat unused for that long. He says he has another one that he has been using.
I like the big screen and its fine for my audio work.

Now I would like to get some of my other scopes working. A 5110 with no HV and a 453 that blows a fuse after working a short while.
I'm giving up on 900 series. I have 4 of them that all work but not correctly. I used to like them but I think they were not built to the high standards of the other models.

Steve,

I have a TDS684x (can't remember if it is a B or C) and it has always been
very finicky with floppy disks. I have learned to format a disk in the
scope and if it passes, then it is usable to extract hard copy files. If I
attempt to format a floppy in any other machine, the TDS684 won't accept
the disk. I've never tried to write a file on another machine and then read
it with the scope since I only use the disk drive for output of images into
other documents.

service manuals and the supplemental SCPI commands to access some of
the fancy waveform envelope features, but I can't find the basic SCPI

be used via the floppy disk. Can anyone point me to the programmer's

It is a sad day for all of us. I did not know Stan personally, but I have read some of his work and heard many stories of his knowledge and his generosity. We have all been touched by him in some way and are blessed to have known him. Prayers for those closest to him in this time of loss.

ROFL!!!!

The matter just came up in the LeCroy list and I suggested there that a PayPal account linked to the listowner@groups.io be used to collect and disburse contributions to maintaining the list. With an autodraft and an Overdrawn notice to the list it might be possible to make it completely automatic.

Thanks for all the hard work.

Have Fun!

These are readily available at Farnell and Mouser.
I've not much experience in RF signals, but I guess that with coax on the "critical" signal pins, that should be sufficient for <= 100MHz, maybe even calibrating.

Sounds good. Consider using the slot pattern that allows any of the keying inserts to be there and still plug in:

Ragnar,

So, you mean the tools you posted on github here do work with Agilent 82357B? like the tekfwtool, etc...
Because everything I have seen about these tools whether here or on eevblog point to NI GPIB-USB
and people say they dont work with 82357B.
NI GPIB is too expensive but my cheap 82357B clone works perfectly for me.

Hi all,

There is some calibration data in the EEPROMs on the acquisition board, but
also in the NVRAMs on the CPU board.

I have been told that you should never swap acquisition boards between scopes
without also moving the NVRAM contents.
Also, there are indications that there is calibration data that not even the
field service calibration data will update, that was written at the factory.

You are right that the NVRAMs are also used for storing waveforms, settings
and other stuff.

If you care about your scope I would _absolutely_ recommend backing up your
NVRAMs and your EEPROMs.

There are some DOS programs build for National Instruments GPIB drivers,
mainly tekfwtool and getcaldata, as well as the floppy based tools that John
pointed out, tdsNvramFloppyTool, that also has a Java program that can verify
the checksums of your dumps.

Both ways of getting your EEPROMs and the NVRAMs are a bit fragile, so I would
recommend using two separate methods, or at least do it twice, and check that
there is no difference between the results.
Sadly there always is a difference in the first bytes of the NVRAM dumps,
because that is where there real time clock is mapped (in the DS1486).

Since I had no National Instruments GPIB interface around (but an Agilent USB
one), and no DOS machine (but linux and unix machines), I did the little work
it took to make them compile clean on Linux, on a Raspberry Pi in my case,
fixed some simple makefiles and made a collection of the tools. Another guy
wanted to run them on a Mac, which was trivial to fix as well, so I added that
too.

You can find my collection here:

Speaking only from experience with TDS 540x, yes the calibration is kept on
the acquisition PCA. I think, but have not taken the time to prove, that the
primary use of the NVRAM is to store trace data. Everyone of the NVRAMs I
have read seem to have a pile of "empty" space in them along with a bit of
stuff relating to options, date, time, and the like.

Just as easily though I could be FoS.

It's my understanding that the calibration constants are stored in EEPROM on
the acquisition board. There's no reason to worry about the options, as it's
easy enough to restore those with GPIB or other means.

Thank you very much for the uploads of the tools. I've downloaded those but will be a few days before I'll get a chance to look at them. I have at least half a day of cleaning out in order to make space to set up the TDS784C properly, and before that I'm up to my ears in alligators with work and other things. When I do get to it, I'll need to do some adapting. I like the idea of Linux, but have never had time to take that plunge as my work keeps me mostly under Windoze, despite my roots being much closer to Linux (HexDOS, PCDos, CPM, and Unix). And I'll need to adapt the I/O to go via Telnet to my KISS-488, which is the only IEEE-488 interface I kept.
I am only happy if others have use for it too!

There are only a few calls that needs to be implemented, like ibwrt(), ibrd(), ibcntl(), ibdev(), ibclr(), ibonl(), and the global status variables like “ibsta”, “iberr", and the constants to test them against, linux-gpib has the constants.

If you are a bit more lazy, or don’t have the time, you could pick up e.g. an Agilent 82357B USB-GPIB interface on eBay for around USD 70, that is what I did. They are marketed as “new”, but they obviously have some chips soldered in afterwards, there is flux left on those, and they are not always that good positioned. Also, they are supposed to have shielding paint on the inside of the plastics, but these don't. But many seems to be happy with these interfaces, and it has worked for me. I would recommend to inspect it first though - mine had a short between two pins on the Xilinx chip, but both pins were "not connected", so it wasn’t a problem and even a self test (if there is one) should most likely not have noticed.

Best regards,

Ragnar

Final Accounting for your Contributions to TekScopes

This is the final accounting of the contributions you made to TekScopes. All
of the refunds have been processed. Previously Michael Dunn and I decided to
return all contributions over $10.00 because your generosity was far more
than we expected. Because PayPal charged a fee in some cases that made this
impractical I increased the $10.00 amount by $2.00. I accepted all of the
contributions below $12.00 and I refunded all of contributions above $12.00.
You should be able to identify your contribution by your personal initials
(or the initials of the organization that made the contribution) in the 2nd
column. You can also identify your contribution from the 3rd column if you
know the date and time when you sent it. You will have to do a little math
to match your local time (hours and minutes) with the time I received it. My
time zone (my local time) is UTC -08. If you know the local time when you
sent your contribution, and you know your UTC offset (mine is -08) you can
search for your contribution that way. There was seldom more than a 2 second
difference between when you sent your contribution to PayPal and when I
received a notice from PayPal about your contribution.
The last column shows the status of your contribution. There are three
possibilities: REFUNDED, ACCEPTED, and SPECIAL REQUEST. Several people had
special requests for what should be done with their contribution. Those
requests are shown as well. More than a few of them felt sorry for my wife,
Marian.
I received 200 PayPal contributions and 4 checks. The total left after
issuing refunds is $1,461. Marian received $52 in special requests, Michael
received $23, and the vintageTEK Museum received $50. That leaves TekScopes
with $1,336.

Honorable mention goes to James McVein who made the first contribution 20
minutes after I sent my request to TekScopes. Michael and I would like to
specially thank Leo Bodnar for contributing the entire amount, $330. It was
impossible for us to accept such a large amount. I hope he was not offended
by our returning his contribution. The most amusing organization to make a
contribution was Armchair Airlines Computer Services Inc. Is every seat in
their fleet of planes a lounge chair? Why can't other airlines do this?

I made many mistakes (six that I am aware of) in how I handled this. I have
taken steps to insure they don't happen again. If you want to know what they
are and how I will prevent them in the future contact me off list at dennis
at ridesoft dot com. Fortunately it should not be necessary to do this again
in the foreseeable future.

For what it's worth I am still the administrator of the Yahoo TekScopes

About 1 or 2 times a week I get a notice that someone wants to join the
Yahoo TekScopes group and I redirect them to us.

I also receive a notice whenever someone leaves the Yahoo TekScopes
group.
Normally there are a few of them per week.
But yesterday I got 11 of them within 2 hours which is extremely
unusual.

Is anyone aware of something that happened on Yahoo that would explain
this?
