I'm thinking 0 Ohm would just be jumper since just strapping as noted above.

Re: TDS-520

I was able to review the schematic and all the missing resistors are 0 Ohm.

The only resistor I can't find on the schematic is R1998. I have R1999 on my board and is 0 Ohm.

Am I safe to say R1998 is 0 Ohm or does anyone know on their TDS-520 what R1998 is?

Also, are the 0 Ohm resistors 1%, 0.125W, TC=100PPM, 1206, T&R like on the TDS-520B?

Would be nice to have volume 1 also of the component level service manual available.

Re: 5440 No Trace

The brand new HV multiplier arrived today. I popped it in and the trace came right back. Everything is looking good. In fact R410 stays very cool. Looking good.

When I put the HV cover back, turned it back on and there was no trace. I didn't realize that R410 was close enough to touch the HV cover and shorted the 44 volt line to ground. I moved it away and the trace didn't come back. I figured I blew the fuse. Fuses all good. All voltage rails are good on LV board and coming into the HV board. Nothing at -3kV test point. Yikes. This is frustrating. I guess I'll undo the multiplier and see if the -3kV comes back. If it does then I guess screwed up the new multiplier.

Well, that gets me back to square one but with a little more knowledge than before. The individual B SOURCE TRIGGER lights don't work but I have reason to suspect that it is the +5 lights connection to board 14. One rainy weekend, I will tear down the front and poke around with a probe but, for now, that's good enough!

Sincere thanks! As good as the service manuals are, they do not seem to address these trivial problems in a readily researchable manner.
The military, or at least the defense contractors, had the desire to
have smart diagnostics carried out by something resembling a data
tablet. You'd plug it into an aircraft, and it would interact, do
tests, and then recommend the proper repair procedure. Given the
amount of smarts in a 7000 series mainframe (and guessing how much
space is left in the only one that *had* a processor in it), the plug
in diagnostic link wouldn't be possible.

However, a decision tree on a per-topic basis would be possible, at
least to some extent. It couldn't be hosted in the scope, but could
be hosted in another piece of equipment.

Possible to do, but I'm not sure how easy. Given the basic logical
framework implementing the decision tree, you could adapt it to any
number of projects, but how close that logic could get is another
matter.

The accuracy and depth of the decision tree for troubleshooting varied
from manual to manual, if it was there at all. Lately, it of course
goes to "replace Axxx board", or "return to factory for repair".

Are you using the Common Design Parts Catalog for any part of the project? While it doesn't have the useable on code (Knob to Model number) listing, the dimensions, logos, labeling, method of manufacture (molded/machined) and ID/OD info is all there, with a directory of drawings. I know of a hard copy I could borrow. The data could be extracted, without outright copying of the entire content, couldn't it?

lights no longer work as well. Before some worked and some did not. Now the
whole thing is dark.

In looking at the service manual, I stumbled onto page 6-3 and note that there
are four boards ("board 11", "board 12", "board 13", "board 14" which are
Vertical Mode, Horizontal Mode, A Trigger Source, and B Trigger Source
respectively.) and each of these is supplied with a "+5V Lights" source from
the Calibrator Board 10 but the schematic shows no originating source and I
have not been inside the uni yet to see what's what.

Anyone troubleshoot this problem and can offer advise and information?

Thanks in advance.

This can't be a big problem. Must be a bad contact somewhere, with just a very few places to check. The 5V(lights) is generated bij the SMPS diagram <8> but is also used there in the balance input to the SMPS control IC . So the source should be OK.
From there the 5V(lights) goes to the rear panel illumination on/off switch. Did you exercise that switch a few times?
Next via board 32 <9> and P32G to the Main Interface Board at <2>. The plugins get their 5V(lights) from the main interface board. So please check P32G for good contact.

I know there is a final 7L18 manual. Somewhere I have the 070-xxxx-xx part number for it written down. You are right in that case there are few if any differences ( I still own a 7L18 myself) .

I understand from a 5L4N owner that the prelim manuals available do not match his unit in a couple of significant places and thus the search for a final version of that one.

The problem is in the link.

The closing bracket has become part of the weblink.

If you copy all the text before closing bracket and open it in a new tab,
the page will open correctly. If you just "Click" on the weblink to open
page, it fails with 404 because the closing bracket gets included as part
of weblink.
