I may have missed something - did you say what the color of the epoxy on the receiver side is?
Some red LEDs are encapsulated in clear epoxy; many are in red epoxy. This could make a big
difference

Right enough, Jac, for day to day valve testing I just use an AVO MK3 VCM (electrode continuity, insulation - cathode cold or hot, gas, etc.), plus AVO's method of determining Ia & mA/V. Likewise -

Tekwiki mentions the Oregon Analog ASM7 which does exactly that, although
I've never seen one, or heard of anyone having one.
Wonder what happened to it? (Pics under 7000 3rd party)
