Giving you part numbers would not be too useful, since the 1S1 still has the offset problems I mentioned. I got a couple of different types through Digikey. If you want to experiment, I expect it's best to look for low-capacitance parts, say, 1-2pF. I'll get back to the 1S1 when I have time. It *is* a weird circuit, and difficult to troubleshoot, even with the manual!

BTW, the Sept 18th Electronic Design has a design idea circuit that's very similar to the Tek design, but modernized and simplified. Quite a coincidence!

Hi stan, thanks for the website info. Stefan has kindly offered to photocopy
his 545b manual so that's one hurdle crossed.
The problems i'm having with my 545b are:

The trace stops and becomes a stationary dot once the scope has been on for
around 10-15 minutes.

Channel A of the CA plug in does not match the voltage settings of CH B even
when adjusting the gain pot.

Horizontal display selections other than B and B intensified by A only
display a dull "cloudy" hue, occasionally showing a trace as you turn the
time / cm control.

I have a tube tester & tested all tubes for quality and leakage & they all
checked out okay so I guess these problems are to do with other parts of the
circuitry.

Bye for now

Stan or Patricia Griffiths <w7ni@...>

Hello Stuart,

Welcome to this group of Tek scope fans!

The type 570 Tube Curver Tracer is probably the most desired of early Tek
scopes. This also makes is rare and expensive. Tek only made about a
thousand of them and most of the remaining ones are in the hands of "glass
audio" enthusiests who value them very highly. Pristine ones are worth
about $3000 USD in the Far East, as I understand it. You would be very
lucky to find one at any price . . . I have one in my collection, but I was
lucky to find it in an estate sale in a barn about 30 miles from my home
near the orignal Tek plant. Mine is a proto-type and was built before
regular production on them started. I got it for $40 USD, as I recall it.

You might find the web page dedicated to early Tek scopes at
<http://www.reprise.com>; to be of interest to you. There is a list of
people who can supply manuals or copies of manuals there for Tek
instruments. I sell some manuals myself on eBay so you might want to check
that out too.

I have a rather huge collection of old Tek stuff (665 instruments) and I
might be able to help you solve some of your 545B/CA problems if you
describe them to me. You will need manuals for each of those instruments
and it would help if you had them first so we can have a common ground for
discussing the circuitry.

Tektronix used to make a valve curve tracer (the 570). I do quite a

new matched set being fitted.

The 570 is a very rare item even here in the US. A friend of mine had one and
sold it to a collector for a quite high price. You can see that very unit on
the cover of Alan Douglas's "Tube Testers and Classic Electronic Test Gear".
According to the book, only about 1000 were made over a period of ten years,
starting in 1956.

Free Tek 422 for parts/fixer upper

Chris Beck <europachris@...>

I have a clean Tek 422 but it does not work. I was told it was the power
supply and that there may be a flyback problem. I haven't verified either
problem, and just don't have the time or the desire to track it down. I
looked around in the power supply and didn't see any obvious signs of
distress, so who knows. The fellow who gave it to me is a chief engineer at a
TV station, so I would assume he knew what he was looking at.

I've got my big 535A anchor and a small Hitachi 40mHz scope for when I need
portablilty, so I'd rather see it go to a good home (USA, preferably) as a
parts donor or fixer-upper project.

The scope is REALLY clean, but the foam lining of the accessory area in the
front cover turned to goo long ago. It would need a bit of elbow grease to
clean it up and replace it. I think there may even be a probe and power cord
in there, I'll have to check.

So, it is free for the asking, all I ask is the "buyer" pay the shipping.
I'll box it up real well so it won't get wrecked.

Thanks,

Chris Beck

Re: What's this Tek item?

Stan or Patricia Griffiths <w7ni@...>

Wow, I need to pay more attention to eBay! You got a REAL STEAL on this
stuff, and yes, I know what it is.

The Tek S-3260 is a very large computer controlled system for testing
integrated circuits. It is vintage about 1975 or so. Some of the options
for the S3260 included a 568 scope with 3S6 and 3T6 sampling plugins for
making some very fast risetime measurements on the IC under test. The
S3260 was capable of handling large scale ICs with up to 64 pins in its
largest configuration (they may have even made larger ones than that). Any
way, the 568/3T6/3S6 is only a two channel sampling system so how do you
look at 64 IC pins with only two channels? The answer is that you multiplex
the two channels to all 64 pins. How do you do that without losing all the
fast capability of the sampling system? The answer is that you locate the
sampling heads (S1's in this case) as physically close to the IC pins as you
can and dedicate one S1 to each IC pin and multiplex the S1's to the two 3S6
channels. The multiplexing is done in groups of up to four sampling heads
plugged into a 286 Sampling Head Multiplexer. If your system needs more
than four sampling heads multiplexed, you can multiplex up to four 286's
with one 288, for a total of up to 16 sampling heads. Still not enough
sampling heads? OK, you can slave up to three 287's to one 288, each one
loaded with four 286's, with each of those 286's loaded with up to four
sampling heads, for a grand total of 64 sampling heads multiplexed. All of
this is explained with pictures on page 251 of your 1973 Tektronix Catalog .
. .

The multiplexers (286's, 287's, and 288's) are not particularily valuable
today (except as maybe an addition to my collection!) since they are only
one component of a large S3260 system and you don't have the rest of it,
like the DEC PDP-11 computer, the Tek 1340 Interface Units, and the
necessary software to control it all. The S1's however, are the gold at the
end of this rainbow! The 1989 Tek Catalog lists S1 Sampling Heads available
from Tek new at a cost of $1695 each! (And you got 23 of them for $2.25 . .
. ! ! not to mention the 286's, etc.) Anyway, those same sampling heads
are useful in the 3S2, 7S11, 7S12 and a few other sampling plugins. So, if
those sampling heads actually work, you should be able to get at least 1000
times your money back . . . but you would really need to check them out
first to expect that kind of return. You say you don't know how to check
them out? OK, so I will give you ten times your money right now and I'll
check them out . . . how about that! 8-)

I took a look at the picture of the stuff you bought and I actually counted
55 sampling heads in the picture. You could always complain to the seller
that you thought you were getting everything shown in the picture and you
expect to recieve all 55 sampling heads . . . ! ! (Then you should be able
to get 2000 times your money ! ! )

Surely this detailed explanation is worth one sampling head and not just a
crumby old useless S3260 compensator card, right?
