Interesting. I've been trying to sort out these intermediate scopes myself.

I have a pre-SN250K scope, but it appears to be mostly constructed of post SN250K boards, except for the vertical amplifier which is a mix of early and later constructions.

Have you tried using the schematic and layout of the post-SN250K manual? My experience has been that it is a good match to my SN177k scope. There are also component variations just due to the rapid evolution of some design details during this period for 465 construction. But the actual PCB seems consistent. Just the details of component stuffing can vary in small ways.

Can you put up a picture of the PS section of the A9 board you're dealing with?

John,

I will add my thanks to you here also.

Your toolkit has been a great help to me in my personal quest to "learn things"

Your SA trace program enabled me to use TIA tools to evaluate the spectral power density and adjacent channel performance of various digital voice modulation formats.

I am sure that there are many like me using your toolkit in amateur and personal applications that wouldn't be possible if the only alternatives were the expensive commercial products.

My Tektronix 465 has a -8vdc power supply problem. The voltage is -2.6vdc. All the other power supply voltages ae correct.

I need to be able to isolate the circuits as best I can when the correct components are located. My problem is that the service manual I have is for higher serial numbers so it is just about impossible to find the components on the schematics. The pictorials do not match my boards exactly. Anyone have a service manual that covers a 465 scope serial number 107659.

Thank you very much John and congratulations for the great work on the 7470.exe program, I also use it with a Panasonic VP-5741A oscilloscope which has the NP-GL II (H) output via the Prologix GP-IB / USB (version 5.4) and goes very well.

I could not hold back, but I simply had to comment on a note re. the Type 575 from company Digilent.
They are a good company in my humble opinion, and they support their customers quite well.
But then, young engineers are "standing on the shoulders of giants", say previous generations of engineers and scientists which have paved the way for them - and I simply wanted to underline that aspect.

'S' stands for SRQ (service request), but it's hard to say what's up with that. The firmware probably expects the host controller to issue a serial poll command to retrieve the status byte at some point. It can be ignored.

The 492P doesn't support HPGL plotting at all, so it's necessary for 7470.EXE to request a trace data block from it and 'synthesize' the plot on the PC side. This is done by merging an HPGL representation of the received trace data points with a prerecorded empty plot that I captured from a later 49x analyzer model that does support the PLOT? query. One complication is that the subroutines used by 7470.EXE to acquire the trace are also used by the SSM trace recorder, which needs to know the actual span width in order to display its X scale properly. To satisfy this requirement, if the SPAN? query returns "MAX", the code obtains the span X extents from the trace data header instead. The fact that the span was set to MAX is lost entirely, since that information isn't useful to SSM and 7470.EXE has no way to know about it. So, again, that's normal behavior.

I only have two questions: the first time I press F4 (7470.exe program) on the
492P screen comes out first a "T", then an "L" and lastly an "S" which remains
until the 492P turns off. Subsequent requests with F4 work, but the "S" is always
present and the "T" and "L" are no longer displayed, is this normal behavior?
A curiosity, when the span / div is selected on "MAX" (display of the 492P) the
plot indicates 420 MHz / div (bands 1 to 3) and 1 GHz / div (bands 4 and 5), I
expected "MAX" to come out also on the plot (?).

2246 Flex PCB Interconnect - How Do You Disconnect Them Without Damaging Them?

I bought my 2246 on eBay 6 years ago. It was really good until 8 weeks ago. Then, without warning, one day it wouldn't turn at all - no diagnostic LEDs, no clicking, nothing.

I found out the hard way that the 2246 was re-designed at Sn 100100 - look out for that trap. I bought the correct new manuals from Artek, "070-7061-00" and "070-7062-00." I also opened the 2246 up.

I am left with a nightmare. I would add photos if I could. The 2246 is stuffed like a sausage. The PS is buried in the middle. You need to disconnect several Flex PCBs to even get started.

I would appreciate any HELP you give me. Thanks.

Greetings everyone,
I have tried replacing U1050 (74LS74) and U2050 (74LS10) on the A50A3 offset mixer board, but without success.
I also tried to replace the 1st mixer, but nothing has changed.
On all span / div the signal amplitude is low compared to the correct value (for example the amplitude of the calibrator of - 20 dBm is indicated as - 43 dBm, the frequency is correct).
Also the error 58 related to Phase Lock mode actually comes out when the 492 P tries to enter in this mode, but fails and indicates "Error 58", even the LED on the "PHASE LOCK" button never lights up.
What could I check?
I suspect it could be a problem with the 1st local oscillator or its driver.

I can now confirm that my solution with the coto 2332 relays worked and brought the unit back to life. I was waiting on and interface board that I doodled up to arrive for testing. Everything worked perfectly except some silk screen was missing but that is due to me using the nightly builds of kicad and nothing the board house did. I have uploaded photos in to the photo section if anyone is curious. For those that make their own boards I would strongly recommend getting these boards made as the plated through hole is a nice to have and there are some very small features. I have 2 more sets of boards if any one else would like a set. And needs some options for a similar unit. The 501A is back up and running now all it needs is a CAL.

The main symptom you need this fix is a galloping auto range that wont settle. In my unit this was caused by multiple dead relays and a bad IC that was sending out funny (incorrect) data.

Bonjour, sealed reed relays are VERY reliable and the telephone system had lifetimes for 40 years in constant use on 24.48V.

But reeds can develop film on the contact surfaces, especially if unused for a long time.

We have sometimes rejuvenated a reed relay wiht this procedure:

1/ Check coil V and I
2/ Apply a line freq low voltage with a variac and transformer (or curve tracer!) that is about that voltage. (have used diode for 1/2 wave rectified) 3/ Allow the relay to buzz for a few minutes.
4/ Test relay and repeat or perhaps raise the applied V if needed.

NOTE: Polar relays with magnets or latching relays should NOT be treated this way!

Be fine if this can succeed!
