Is the pinout correct if you install it upside down?
Yes, and this is most likely what I will do. But anyway I wanted to hear
from people who already went through this. I just find it strange that Tek
document has it reversed without any comment or regard.

Dear Group,

050-1413-01 code:

same document:

outlining this replacement. The problem I have now is that drain and source
of the 151-5025-00 FET in the above document are reversed compared to
MMBF4416. None of the datasheets for MMBF4416 say it's symmetrical, and I
somehow doubt an RF JFET would be without optimizations on the drain side.
This comment however states it is symmetrical:

but I see no facts this claim is based on. Does anyone have direct
experience with this particular replacement and D-S polarity? Disassembling
the probe head is a pain, I'd like to get this right on the first go.

Hi Dennis. This has been tremendous response, my personal views are that this group should be secured for the future, after that I would leave it to your  discretion.

Wrapping up the TekScopes pledge drive, Michael Dunn and I are STUNNED by your generosity and all the positive comments we received. Your contributions have exceeded the $340 paid to Groups.io by almost 1,000%. You sent us 203 contributions totaling $3,341.77!

We agree this is a problem that I will have to fix since it was my bright idea. I did not realize when I sent my request for help that people would be so generous. I wrote, "So I am asking for small contributions". What happened was anything but "small".

Leo Bodnar, a friend, stunned me when he contributed the entire required amount two days later. This was the first sign I should have chosen a synonym such as "tiny" or "teeny" instead of small. It was too late at that point. I could see there was a tsunami headed my way and I had no way to stop it. I think the contributions have finally stopped. The last one (I
hope) arrived three days ago.

Michael and I have decided that this is far too much money for us to keep on behalf of TekScopes. The simplest solution is for us to tear up the checks and return all the PayPal contributions above $10.00 (actually all those above $10.05) over the next few days, with our sincerest thanks. This will result in exactly half of the contributions being kept and half being returned. PayPal allows me to do a total refund very quickly; we considered partial refunds, but the process would take much longer. If, after you receive your refund, you would still like to make a contribution to TekScopes, please don't send more than $10.00. If you do, we'll be forced to spend it on wine and DMMs.

Thank You,
Dennis Tillman W7PF

As I promised, here is every contribution I received. The four checking account contributions are listed in numerical order by their bank account number. Following those, the 199 PayPal contributions are listed in numerical order by their transaction number. I double and triple checked the PayPal notices that came to me or to my wife, Marian, to be sure I didn't miss any. If I missed your PayPal contribution please let me know so I can find out what happened to it. The most common contribution was $10.00 and the average contribution was $15.94.

Thanks for the data, Dave.

I guess the only remaining question in my mind is whether the reset bug
ever shows up with a 7L5 in NON-7854 mainframes.

Now I have to start chasing the two apparent design errors more in-depth.
My 7L5 is now in bug-free condition except for the "reset" and "below 10KHz
display" errors. I have two extender cables. Time to do some serious
debugging.

Re: Mounting and dismounting curve tracer 177 fixture

Thank you for your assistance. Sure enough, there were 2 screws on the
bottom that locked the 177 in place. I never would have known about this
locking mechanism without your help. Once I removed the screws, the 177
slid out easily. Thank you again for your help.

Hi Gary,

Oh boy, I once spend hours trying to get the 177 out of my first 577.
Turn the 577 over. There are two screws near the front of the 577 bottom
panel that screw in to the 177 to hold it in place. I suspect they are
there to prevent the 177 from being easily stolen. The 177 will not budge
until you remove them.
Then you can pull it out by the two ground lugs on either side of the
front of the 177. At first it may seem stuck but that is because the
connector contacts of the 577 holds the PC Board of the 177 pretty tight.

Does anyone know how to mount and dismount the 177 test fixture into the
577 curve tracer? Is there a locking mechanism?

Not misremembering, but the rates may have changed again.

I checked the rate for first class international, and was expecting
that price, but the postal clerk did, and said what I said.

Re: 7L5 dot frequency reset bug - any clues or a fix?

Cliff Carrie

Thanks for the data, Dave.

I guess the only remaining question in my mind is whether the reset bug ever shows up with a 7L5 in NON-7854 mainframes.

Now I have to start chasing the two apparent design errors more in-depth. My 7L5 is now in bug-free condition except for the "reset" and "below 10KHz display" errors. I have two extender cables. Time to do some serious debugging.

They could have killed two birds with one stone if they simply
put a "U" shaped pull handle on the front of the porch. Then
they would have had a way to remove the porch, and the handle
would have protected the switch, without getting in its way.

Almost impossible to switch and no switch to be had. I was able to find a similar switch, one with the same handle and mechanisim, disassemble both switches and replace just the bat handle and metal lever. Not a simple task, good thing is that I found a broken solder joint on one of the pads on the board for the switch, so that probably saved me some issues down the road.

Re: 11801 questions - funny fan noise and light

Chuck Harris <cfharris@...>

My 11801C does that too. I believe it has a temperature regulated
fan, and the feedback loop is kicking the fan motor too hard when it
comes on, and then it takes a while for the motor to slow back down,
only to get kicked again: brrrumm, brrrumm, brrrumm, ...

Probably a bad capacitor somewhere.

Is this normal? Could it be a problem with the fan speed regulation, or maybe a mechanical problem with the fan itself?
Interestingly, if I remove the screws to the fan and just hold it in my hand it stops doing that, like if it had something to do with the resistance for the air it tries to move, or maybe a problem with how it is mounted. But I have not succeeded to make it do the sound by blocking the air path.

- There is a small neon (?) light in the power supply that can be seen through the fan or from the top when the lid is off, that flickers. Is it supposed to do that?

Thanks for any hints, and best regards,

Hi Brian,
205 contributions were received. The bill for one year is $110.
About $0.53 each would have done it.

Dennis,

Just as a frivolous matter, what contribution value would have resulted in enough to pay this year's bill given the number of contributers?

My vote is also to put the money aside for the future of the group please.

Rates changed last year, but I think you are misremembering, because
the minimum increment for a package was always much higher than that.

Here are current rates for a 4 oz mailpiece sent to Canada by USPS:

letter via FCMI retail (can't be merchandise) $2.91
package via FCPI retail $10.50
package via "Pirate Ship Simple Export" $7.95

Re: Mounting and dismounting curve tracer 177 fixture

I have seen a picture of one. I often thought about making them myself. I have broken off those knobs several times. I am surprised Tek allowed that to be exposed. It begs to be snapped off.

The guard is just a simple U shaped piece of anodized aluminum with a hole in it. You unscrew the threaded nut holding the switch, slip the guard over the neck of the switch and screw the nut back on.

Bob,

Have you ever seen a 577/177 with a switch guard? I have heard rumors that some late model units had a loop guard over the switch to stop from getting the switch handle broken off.

Re: Your generosity is STUNNING!

Hi Craig,
Actually the refund process is probably the easiest. PayPal makes it simple to refuse an entire contribution.
The museum contacted me to find out if they should send a donation to us. I told them we did not need it by that time. Imagine if they had made a donation and we, in turn made a donation to them.

The museum is in need of more volunteers their financial situation is sufficient as far as I know. Michael and I feel it would be better to return entire contributions that were too generous.

Dennis,
Maybe instead of trying to make the refund process so stressful for yourself. You might want to consider a donation to the Tektronix Museum from the group. As this is a good cause for the history and future of the product.

Thank You,

As I promised, here is every contribution I received. The four checking account contributions are listed in numerical order by their bank account number. Following those, the 199 PayPal contributions are listed in numerical order by their transaction number. I double and triple checked the PayPal notices that came to me or to my wife, Marian, to be sure I didn't miss any. If I missed your PayPal contribution please let me know so I can find out what happened to it. The most common contribution was $10.00 and the average contribution was $15.94.

Tek 222 Probe ground lead

Charlie

HI,
New member here, just finished fixing my 468 with the info from this group, thanks!
I have a 222 that's missing one of the probe's ground leads. Anyone have an extra ground lead or the whole probe to sell?
Thanks,
Charlie
