Re: it's easy to add an external battery at 2465B NVRAM

Jean-Paul
I don't see the necessity to seal the hole after the operation because the pin denuded became a simple pin same at all pins of IC DIL8 existing on the 2465B board who are never sealed

Re: it's easy to add an external battery at 2465B NVRAM

Joseph

NO GerryR ... It is impossible to disconnect the internal battery. The external battery is simply connected in parallel
The advantage is that if one day we have to replace the external battery, the internal battery will keep the data during the short operation it will take

Re: 2465B .. test 04 fail 01 ... what's?

Joseph

Strange because I see the NVRAM datas on my programmer
Is it possible that the problem could come from a break track? ... I unsoldered with difficulty the NVRAM ?

Yes, it's easy to add an external battery at a 2465B NVRAM

Joseph

Why add it? :
Before this operation I couldn't read the NVRAM on my programer and after I could do it .. I was happy!

I used this Dremel head
Before begin .. insert the NVRAM in a socket to protect his fragile pins !!

https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2020/02/7/1578821555-r0159819web.jpg

I started in front of the first "A" of text "DALLAS" ... this is where is located the pin 7 of IC
(Luckily the DS1218 is a old DIL8 case with his large pins which will makes research easier)

Carefully I came down and widen the hole very near of case until i seen the copper appear
(It's the good moment to measure the internal battery voltage between this copper and pin 14 of the NVRAM)
Then i widened it enough to be able to solder a wire

Maybe a piece of advice : do not widen it too much on the side of the "D" and "L" of dallas so as not to short-circuit, with the dremmel head, the pins 7 with 6 or 8 of DS1218 because I don't know if that could kill it? .. see inside picture below

https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2020/02/7/1578824834-capture-2020-01-12-a-11-26-01.jpg

I cut the branches of my socket to be able to easily pass the wire
Then I soldered two wires:
- positive on pin 7 of DS1218
- negative on pin 14 of NVRAM

https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2020/02/7/1578825024-r0159817web.jpg

My final solution :
I decided to keep the original NVRAM equipped of an external battery
For the battery I chose this one on Amazon

Joseph is using a "bulletin board" style editor that inserts pictures in the text as you read (notice all those )  Those are commands to help the software he is using.  It is incompatible with our (groups.io) message based email system so we only see the links.  Simply strip anything with square brackets [] and the brackets to get valid links.   On Monday, January 13, 2020, 06:46:56 AM CST, Tony Fleming <czecht@gmail.com> wrote:

Re: Tektronix 532 LV rail shorted

randolphbeebe@...

I have been away from my computer for a few days and finally have been able to try Rajesh's diagnostic suggestions. All the tubes were previously checked but I re-checked all the rectifier tubes and they were all good with no shorts. With all the tubes in place C640 and R110 were getting hot when the scope is powered up with a current limiter.

-I removed V605 and V606 from the sockets and powered it up. C640 no longer gets hot but R110 still does. R110 gets hot so quickly that if I left the power switch on for more than 90 seconds I am certain it would burn in half . This is without a plug-in installed

-Voltage across C640 measures 0V DC and around 80V AC which is about the same whether or not V605-V606 are installed. (Measured when C110 was disconnected to remove ground and short on R110, C110 is a new cap and still tests good)

-Filament voltage measures 2.3V AC across Pins 2 and 8 of 606

Once again This is through a Variac with 90V selected. When the scope is turned on this value reduces to 50V.

It was suggested that perhaps C110 was installed backwards, the schematic indicates the (-) lead to ground. I tested it when C110 was installed in both directions and the results are the same either way.

The pertinent schematic photos are under the Tek 532 folder

Thanks Again Guys

is there any command that can set the number of power cycles and hours of operation on TDS3000 series?

i hacked a battery for the DS1742W but now I have lost the above information... I tried to read the chip before
hacking it and saved the file (read several times and saved by GQ-4x4 programmer) but when I tried to reprogram the chip
(after I added the battery) it didnt program it and failed with error even though the device is supposed to be supported...

Re: 2465B .. test 04 fail 01 ... what's?

Chuck Harris <cfharris@...>

The simple answer is it means that your calibration
data is lost.

The cause is usually a dead battery... either in a NVRAM part,
or a separate lithium cell... depending on the serial number of
your scope (B050000 and greater: NVRAM, B049999 and lesser:
separate battery)

The location of the NVRAM, or battery, is on the A5 controller
card on the right side of your scope.

The solution is to replace the NVRAM, or battery, and have your
scope recalibrated.

Do not buy a preprogrammed NVRAM. It will not allow your scope
to function accurately. Each scope has its own unique calibration
data, that can only be discovered through calibration.

What does that mean"parity error on read"?
What is the action to resolve this problem ?

Re: Hakko FR-301 alternatives?

Jean-Paul

Hello All: many thanks for the feedback and tips. The highly regarded Hakko FR-301 is beautiful, my Hakko ancient 926 irons are still going stron!
However, my use does not justify such a costly item. VERY costly tips, ~ $20!

Alternately, Chinese ZD-985 has some reports on Amazon of stiff cables and reversed IEC maions cabe wiring. I wounder the QC and safety of these, eg HyPot ground to line?

Checked Velleman VTDESOL3U from Jameco Electronics, $8.95 each on Amazon, bought 2, Arrived next day; very fine for a cheap Chinese clone!

Easy to remove tip, a bit of maneuvering to open the pump chamber.

30W is low, so long to warm up.

Works fine, very effective! Did'nt try the fine pitch TEK 2465B PSU repair yet.

Replacement tips ~ $2 on Jameco, or Amazon, ~ 10% cost of the Hakko tips.

Enjoy,

Jon

Joseph: GREAT JOB!

The Dremel tool friction can create static electric and stress the potting compound. After the fine repair did you cover the holes with some sealant to ensure its airtight?

Enjoy,

Jon

PS: The DigiKey DS1227 are only $20, with fresh date codes and battery saver feature, they should last 10-20 years

Re: it's easy to add an external battery at 2465B NVRAM

Hello Joseph,
Did you remove the internal battery before / after adding the external battery?
The Test 04 fail probably means your calibration data is corrupt, and once you have replaced the NVRAM, you have to recalibrate the 'scope.

Before this operation I couldn't read the NVRAM on my programer and after I could do it .. I was happy!

My final solution :

Who, what, you talking about me? "Two guys and a truck" need to make a living too! So, if you have a tad of social conscience, our "industry" is good for society. Yeah, let's face it, humanity has no other recourse. We are genetically incapable of doing anything other than burying this planet in our turnings. We violate Nature as if thinking our "stuff" goes to Earth to re-emerge in the Spring as bright new creativity to make life richer, more purposeful, as if the Universe depends on our answers. Our scopes are just the excretion of the metastatic disease often referred to as "technology." Ha, ha! As the dead meathead the vultures will consume out back of the Whitehouse had said, "get over it." Staple the Two Guys and a Truck business card to your will.
