The GE Tunnel Diode Handbook (from 1961) describes tunnel diodes and back diodes and can be downloaded online. The Micro-semi PIN Diode Circuit Designers Handbook is, likewise, available. Outside of knowing that Gunn diodes are used for making microwave oscillators, I have no background with them.

a standard part number of 1N5767. This device is available.
