I use isopropyl alcohol, sometimes methanol if things are a bit stubborn.
Follow that with a wipe with white vinegar (acetic acid) if there is battery induced corrosion and a good rinsing with distilled water.

Once it's as clean as can be, a bit of Deoxit D100 or Deoxit gold on the gold bits wiped on for a while before reinstallation has it all nice and clean. Usually anyway....


Here's the before and after of the above procedure on a gold edge connector in a HP 4276A LCZ meter that had a battery vomit everywhere..
