Infantryman's Basic Load

Kurt Feltenberger

What was the basic load for an infantryman in the 80s? Specifically, I'm looking at the number of magazines for their rifle and whether they carried any spare (boxed?) ammo to reload.  This question was predicated by finding a Warsaw Pact (not sure the nationality) AK mag bag that carried three (four?) mags and was slung over the shoulder.

Follow up question:  Has this changed from then to the present day?

Thanks!

210 rounds 7 mags basic load 11B US Army. Then as much ammo in bandoleers as you could load into your ruck after mission essential equipment. 600 rounds per M60, we always tried to carry 800 plus. We hadn’t received SAWS when I was in. I don’t remember the M203 ammo basic load.

Standard US load was 210 rds. 6x30rd mags in ammo pouches, 1 in rifle.

If I recall correctly a ammo can held 420rds (2 reloads) in bandoleers.  There would be a number of those in the vehicle. Brought to the foxhole for defensive operations.

You are correct. In 1/75th I carried 4 pouches each with 3 mags of 30 rounds and one in the rifle giving me 390 rounds in total. As our mission(s) were more isolated, we carried more, plus the two additional bandoliers in our rucks. Along with spare batteries for the radios, belted ammo for the M60, and stripped down rations which were either original C rations, or LRRP rations, and later MRE's. Snivel gear was limited and spread across the squad, as we were at 50% alert at all times.
When I came back in, about a year after getting out and trying ROTC, I came down on levy and went to Germany for 3 years, still maintaining my same load out in my combat bag, with standard 2 mag pouches for training and guard duties, which was the mech infantry load out.

Thanks!

And thanks to all who answered.  Does anyone have what the average Warsaw Pact soldier would carry?

Thanks!
