TMD700 intermittently not sending APRS.
Keith Kaiser
I have a D700 I've been using for at least 10 years. It has always worked perfectly for all my needs including APRS which has been running for most of that 10 years.
On July 19th I left Kansas City for a trip to northern Minnesota via I29 north before cutting east to Virginia, MN then south again to various stops along the way. If you look at https://aprs.fi/#!mt=hybrid&z=13&call=a%2FWA0TJT-1&timerange=604800&tail=604800 you'll see that APRS worked wonderfully... until it didn't. Going north you'll notice a gap starting at this last beacon: 46.8323 N 95.7418 W 2022-07-21 13:20:58 63 MPH 90° alt 1493 ft 31465 MN-34, Detroit Lakes, MN 56501, USA Keith and Deb from KCMO [TV4Y9T via WIDE1-1,qAR,K0RQ-2] At the time I attributed this gap to a lack of stations to iGate my APRS to the world. I didn't think that gap was normal because I have been through that area before but that's what I told myself anyway. There were a number of beacons in the Virginia, MN area before stopping again until I got to the McGregor, MN area where a couple more beacons were iGated, again it stopped and never restarted all the way down to Kansas City, MO. I've spent the last couple hours trying to determine the issue with no luck. I get a beacon once in a while but not consistently and I have no idea what could be causing the intermittency. I've followed all cables (GPS to radio, radio to power and radio head, etc.) all appear to be connected properly and in good condition. I have all the proper settings on the unit, the GPS is blinking as it should, the beacon menu is on, nothing has been changed in ... well years. I've also tested the radio, I use band A for APRS and B for voice and it all works as expected. All menus look normal and as they always have been. And yes the frequency is correct. LOL So does anyone have a suggestion on what I should check next? A out in the blue idea what my issue might be, a wild guess as to what I might look at to fix this kind of issue? being tracked · stop tracking · track in Street View |

Squelch maybe? Increase it some. Don't think they will transmit if they think they hear a signal. Likely not it but seems like you ha e alot of the other stuff covered On Wed, Jul 27, 2022, 1:17 PM Keith Kaiser <wa0tjt@...> wrote: I have a D700 I've been using for at least 10 years. Hmmmm! Not sure how squelch applies here but I'm going to give it a look and a twiddle to see if it effects it somehow.
Thanks for the idea, its definitely an out of the box idea and worth the look. |

If it is open the radio will not send, Dave On Wed, 27 Jul 2022, 18:43 Keith Kaiser, <wa0tjt@...> wrote: Hmmmm! Not sure how squelch applies here but I'm going to give it a look and a twiddle to see if it effects it somehow. |

It definetly does affect it. Set it wide open then get pretty aggressive with the squelch. You will likely notice a difference if your in an area with traffic. The weak stations that can just barely be heard but not decoded are the ones that end up causing issues for transmit On Wed, Jul 27, 2022, 1:43 PM Keith Kaiser <wa0tjt@...> wrote: Hmmmm! Another vote for checking the squelch settings.
I run with CTCSS (either 100Hz for Voice Alert or a random tone to avoid to listening to packet racket) on both my D700 and D710. Several times I have inadvertently bumped the squelch on one of the them so that it was open and thus no beaconing. 73 Randy KA0AZS -- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus |

I believe that squelch can effect the transmission but I’m not sure its the issue here. I’ve opened up the squelch, I’ve closed it down, and I’ve set it somewhere in the middle, it still is not transmitting.

It appears that one beacon might be coming out of it. I say this because I took it for a drive just now and only what appears to be the initial beacon was picked up. The rest of my 10+ minute test drive sowed nothing. To be sure I was seeing things on such a short drive I set the rate to once every .2 minutes. I’m now monitoring it with my HT and its beaconing every .2 minutes but nothing is hitting aprs.fi, so now I’m thinking it must be the radio antenna. I’ll keep you all informed and thank you to everyone who is trying to help me with this problem.

Good luck. I actually have issues with the pl259 working loose on my 710 just from hitting bumps on the roads over time. On Wed, Jul 27, 2022, 7:05 PM Keith Kaiser <wa0tjt@...> wrote:

I think its time I close this discussion. I believe the issue I had WAS related to the squelch, I now have it set about ½ way between on and off and my APRS reports are being broadcast again. This was a learning step for me, I did not know that squelch was related to transmit. Just shows after 55 years as a ham you can still learn.
