TM-D710G Password

Has anyone figured out how to reset the power on password in the D710G? Here's what happened.
I wrote my config to the radio with the password button checked in MCP-6A software. Now I realize the password field wasn't blank, but contained 6 spaces. Now the radio is locked with that password but there doesn't seem to be a way to enter spaces as the password on the control head. I verified my mistake by making a copy of the .mc6 data file that I had written to the radio and opening it with a hex editor. I found the password data by comparing it to another copy of the file where I saved a known password [123456]. In the same location of that string I found 0x20 in each byte, and that is consistent with the fact that the password field in MCP-6A appears to have six spaces. Any advice on the next step? |

I don't have permission to post yet. RT Systems allows you to clear the password.

I have RT Systems KRS-D710 for macOS but I could not find the feature there, so I contacted RT Systems. RT Support said they cannot clear the password. They were not intimately familiar with the problem because they suggested overwriting the radio config. But you can't do that unless you enter the password. They suggested entering all zeros as the password (which was stored as all spaces) but there are only digits 1-5 on the control head.

I also sent a message to Kenwood support but haven't heard back from them yet. Their reply email said it could take up to 48 hours for a reply. 73 de KD6ECF

I tested it with my PC and D710 and it worked. The password set-up is in Settings -> Radio Menu Settings. Password Enable is near the top of the screen.

Jeff, thanks again for your reply. I need to be sure that I understand what you are writing.
For me that does not work. The radio will not accept a new config file, or even the same config file, because the control head is asking for a password and the radio won't communicate with the PC. What am I missing? 73

My RT Systems will let me send to the radio even if the password screen is showing. Here are the steps I take:
Have you ever read the configuration file from your radio? That might be what is preventing it from writing to the radio. I can send you a copy of mine. It could also be related to the version of RT Systems. Jeff WX7OR |

The big difference for me is that I own the macOS version of the RT Systems software, and I use the Kenwood MCP-6A software for Windows. From what you wrote, it seems the Windows edition of the RT Systems software will do what I need. I will purchase that. Yes, please send me a config file for the TM-D710A for RT Systems Windows edition and I'll see if I can use that to unlock the radio. I don't have a config file to use because I haven't used that software yet. I truly appreciate the help. 73

Just wondering? Have you tried to do a Full Reset by having radio off and hold the F key while powering on? Or does that go to password screen, as well?

Yes, I tried, but I need to enter the password before accessing the reset menu.

The ONLY thing I've been able to do is rewrite firmware to the control head. That didn't help. I could write firmware to the TNC if there were any available. It will not accept the Main firmware without the password. 73

Jeff WX7OR, thank you for your help. It's fixed. The problem was me. I've been connecting the USB-K5G cable to the control head com port to write the configurations using MCP-6A in Windows and the KRS-D710 Software in macOS. That worked until it didn't. Specifically, when the MCP-6A wrote an invalid password to the radio (6 0x20 chars) I could no longer program or access the radio using the control head com port, though I kept trying. Then, with your help, I realized my mistake and connected the USB-K5G cable to the PC port on the back of the radio. That works. I wrote my own config file to the radio, changed my password and then disabled my password.
Then I ran some tests and it turns out the macOS edition of RT Systems KRS-D710 can overwrite the password protected radio config, and so can Kenwood MCP-6A (as long as the cable is connected properly). In the end I also purchased the Windows edition of KRS-D710 but it's a small price for the convenience of using the macOS and Windows editions of KRS-D710 read the write the same data files. 73 de KD6ECF |

Remember that if you're going to buy the RT Systems software, you're going to need to buy their proprietary cable as well so the software will work.
