TM-D700 with Signal link and Winlink Vara
Barry Isseks
Hi group... I am trying a TM-D700 with a Signal Link through the 6pin Data port. The internal TNC is off. I cannot get connection to any local winlink packet sites with this configuration, or with the internal TNC at 9600bd. I have a working IC9700 with another signal-link so I know the path is good.
If you have a TM-D700 that works with external sound card, or the internal Kenwood TNC for packet,I need to know how you have set it up. Mine works fine for APRS with internal TNC at 1200bd. Thanks for any help. Barry K6ZA |

You need to download UZ7HO and APRSIS 32. In Configure > Go to Port > create new port. Click on TCP and setup localhost or 127.0.0.1 Port 8000. In UZ7HO go to device and check off port 8000 and 8001. Point the Soundcard to the Signalink codec. UZ7HO needs to run before your APRS program. 73 Don Poaps New Westminster, BC VA7DGP DATA VA7QU VOICE Winlink: va7qu@... In Winlink Express go to > Packet session > open and go to Packet setup. Click on TNC arrow to Kiss and it will show port 8100. In the setup it will have a menu where you browse to UZ7HO program. Click on that. Update etc. So when you open the packet session UZ7HO will startup. If you have channel selection and updated before your off-grid. Your Grid Location will pull in the local Winlink Gateway. For Vara FM. Download program and in Winlink Express Open Vara FM and point RMS to the Vara program. This is basically the same setting as UZ7HO however it's Vara. There are Help in RMS Winlink Express that can help. 73 Don Poaps New Westminster, BC VA7DGP DATA VA7QU VOICE Winlink: va7qu@... Hey Barry,
Did you see Don VA7DGP response? I have been working with another Ham in Mill Valley who is also using the same setup. I got the Internal TNC working with Winlink BUT it was a Royal Pain in the Kazooo! It was used for the latest Ecomm exercise “Golden Eagle” and worked quite well. The Signalink USB should work just as well. Anyway look for you over the weekend on HF! I think you got my Cell# so call me if needed.

I installed the UZ7HO software and ran setup as outlined. on both pieces. Could not then get the signal link to key the radio. Then I ran across the following article which I followed to set up Win 10 and signal link wirh Vara. It is not radio specific, but in my experience any radio should work with an interface that brings out audio and PTT for which the Signal Link excels, with every interface in the book. . Again I am not using the internal Kenwood TNC, it is turned off. Anyway, with the computer settings from the article it came up and worked as expected. I’ll now put the TM-D700/signal link combo in the go-box. it should be noted that Signal link new version (after 2018 or so) with surface mount transformers, will provide better bandwidth for Vara then the older one I am using.

Hey Barry!
Glad to know it’s working! If you get on HF, my Winlink Gateway is scanning 80, 40, 30 and 20meters, KB6HOH-12. Check it out and let me know what Mode (VARA-HF or ARDOP) on what Band worked for you.
