D710 running VARA UHF and VHF

Ray

will or can the Kenwood D710 run VARA FM on VHF and UHF at the same time? (not answering two connections at the same time)
I have configured VARA FM and have set up one channel for UHF and on for VHF.  My question is will the DRA controller be able to route the audio to the correct side the connection was made on? Or can this even be done?

I have the usb cable plugged into the radio head and seems to transmit only on one side.? But I do not have a way to test both sides for receive and transmit.

I am using a DRA SR board for the audio to the rig....

any thoughts are appreciated...

Hello Ray,

Your email is a bit confusing to me as you mentioned you have a "USB cable plugged into the radio head".  I assume you meant you have a USB to serial adapter connected to the radio head but this connection is ONLY for communicating with the built-in AX.25 TNC.  That TNC does not support VARA.  The primary way to do VARA with the D710 is to connect your sound card to the 6pin DATA jack on the back of the main *radio body*.  This will let you run VARA-narrow or (if put that VFO into 9600 mode [Menu item AUX --> 518:EXT DATA SPEED) and you have the correct cabling), run VARA-WIDE mode on the non-TNC enabled VFO.

If you really wanted to run another VARA session on the TNC-enabled VFO, you could come up with a cable harness that uses the SPKR-out and MIC-IN jacks.  With turning off the TNC and doing very careful audio level tuning, you should be able to get the standard VARA to function there too.  If VFO-A and VFO-B are configured to operate on separate bands say VHF and UHF, the radio should be able to work both bands simultaneously.  The final piece is the sound card.  You don't mention which DRA sound device you're using but the DRA line ( https://www.masterscommunications.com/products/radio-adapter/dra/dra-features.html ) only supports MONO audio.  This means if you want to run two concurrent VARA sessions, you'll need to buy and run TWO DRA units.

Hello David, your correct I do have a serial to USB adapter in line, thinking that maybe some of the information from the computer may be going to the tnc via this cable, but sounds like its not used at all....thanks for that.

I am using the DRA-SR sound device, and yes the six pin is plugged into the data port on the D710.  I have two instances of VARA configured to talk to the DRA-SR via different data ports. I guess I need to look into the 6pin on the radio and see if the audio is split up on different pins. And as you say I may need a separate DRA-SR in order to keep the audio separate if the pin out will not  work in keeping them separate. This is getting more complicated that my first thoughts....LOL

thanks for your feedback, this is a great help!

The data stream in and out of the DRA-50 can only be routed to one side of the radio at a time.  It's how the D710 was engineered.

Thanks Bob, I was afraid it would come down to something like that....OH well was fun trying...
