Thanks for that info. I have tried cleaning the contacts and even a different cable with no success. I'll see if someone locally has a D700 head I can try

I had this exact same problem with my former D700 years ago. I sent it to the former Kenwood repair facility in Virginia (which I believe is no longer in operation), and after it came back it worked for a few days and the exact same problem returned. I don't know what the repair facility did or what the cause was. I ended up getting a D710 and sold the D700 as-is to another Ham. I don't know if he ever was able to resolve the issue.

Since then I have read about several D700s experiencing this failure mode. Probably a design flaw or problematic component. Most disappointing.

The only time I've seen this type of screen is when my D710 has been put into either firmware upgrade mode via the Kenwood windows firmware program or memories programming mode using the Kenwood MCP-6A programming software.
