For all of you out there with a D700, mine is showing rather bizarre
behavior and I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this or
might have some suggestions as to what I might do about
it. Basically the problem comes down to the unit being essentially
deaf. That is the front end sensitivity, as determined by terribly
unscientific testing, appears to be about 1/4 or worse than that of
my TH-F6 with a rubber duck! So here is the test and the results.

The unit is mounted in my car with a Diamond SG9600 tri-band antenna
(6m-2m-0.7m). I am running APRS (144.390) on channel A and
attempting to access a repeater on channel B (147.060). I was at a
point where I could see the mountain on which the repeater was
located even though it was some 50 mi. away. I was unable to get
the repeater to even break the squelch (or hear the repeater with
the squelch open) on the D700 running at high power.
I thought, this seems strange so I pulled out the Th-F6 with the
rubber duck and keyed it up from within the car and brought up the
repeater and could hear the repeater at full quieting without any
problem. The squelch still did not break on the D700 so I opened up
the squelch all the way and could not hear either myself
transmitting with the HT or other people operating on the repeater
that I could hear with the HT. Next I transmitted with the D700
and, listening with the HT found that indeed I was keying the
repeater, just not hearing it. With a power meter I verified the
VSWR to be about 1.1 or less and the transmission was about 50 watts
into the antenna. Next I put the HT on the external antenna that
had been on the D700 on the HT and the signal in and out only got
better. To make matters worse as I approached the repeater site and
cut the line of sight distance by about a factor of three to four
(1/4 to 1/3 the distance at which the HT was at full quieting) the
D700 woke up and heard the repeater signal. I am running a tone
(67.0 Hz) and no CTCSS. The S-Meter squelch is off so the squelch
should behave normally. This same sensitivity problem seems to
exist on channel A that I was using for APRS, thigh I did not notice
much because I kept the volume off on that channel until I started
having problems. Since I did not have a means to decode the APRS
signals on the HT I could not verify that I was getting full
signals, but the HT was hearing many more broadcasts on 144.390 that the
D700.

As I said, if anyone has a some suggestions as to things to try or
check before I box it and mail it back to Kenwood it would be
greatly appreciated.

I would check the AIP setting, menu item 1-3-5, if it is on it would
explain the problem. The AIP is great for limiting the intermod
monsters in a metro area, but really kills the receive sensitivity.
