I've never had a problem with my D700 display and it sits
on top of my dash in the direct bight sunlight. It reads just fine
with no washout. Sounds like you have a defective head (weak display).

Re: 800MHz. Receive coverage

Chris Rose <kb8uih@...>

Receiving trunked groups with a scanner or other receiver not built for this
purpose is a problem at best. The noise of the trunking command
frequency(data channel) of the talk group you are listening to is annoying
to say the least. Without a scanner that removes this problem(the data is
interpreted by the scanner to allow proper coverage of the group) you can't
hear both sides of a conversation at all times. You might hear the dispatch
of a fire unit and the arrival of a police car. You miss the dispatch of
the police unit and the arrival of the fire unit. It is very hit and miss.
You hear the garbage trucks and local building inspectors and miss the
police and fire. I have used a trunk tracking scanner for a few years now
and won't advise anyone to use anything else for the purpose. Too hit and
miss and annoying the other way.
Thanks and good luck,
Chris

Subject: [TMD700A] 800MHz. Receive coverage

Hello,
I will be purchasing a 700a soon. Scanning 800Mhz. trunked frequencies is
one of the things I would like to do.

The Kenwood specs. and brochures mention that cellular + frequencies are
excluded. It's the PLUS part that worries me.

My last Kenwood stopped coverage at 865Mhz. which renders it useless for
covering most public service trunked frequencies (866 - 868Mhz. area).

Can anyone tell me what the gaps are at 800? Has anyone been able to
receive 1296Mhz. repeaters?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Do most folks find that they need to add RF chokes to the extension cable (I notice that this is included in the overpriced extension cable kit from Kenwood)? I'm contemplating about a 5 foot extension.

Thanks,

Speaking of TM-D700A microphones, I went to extend mine using an RJ-45
category
5 network cable and a female to female RJ-45 coupler.
Although the connector pins ohm out as being one to one, the cable doesn't
work.
The cable is a pre-made network cable, 12 feet long, with RJ-45 connectors
at
each end. The cable, and coupler, using an ohmeter have pin 1 connected to
pin
1 on the other end. No pins interconnect.
It seems that this should work to extend the microphone, yet when it is
connected the receive audio is muted and the radio draws 8 amps current.
Any suggestions?

Re: Which microphone?

I made just such a cable and it worked fine. In fact I have 2 of them, one
approx. 6 ft and another approx. 12 ft. Check your coupler.

Re: Which microphone?

Thomas M. Schaefer <toms@...>

That is exactly how I extended my cables. I even made the cable myself, so
it should work.

I'm confused about Tone encode and Decode on the D700.  They do mention
"Tone" and "CTCSS".  I thought these were the same.  The encode function
seems to work fine.  Does anyone know how to turn on Decode?

Thanks,

I got my d-700 about a month ago and have loved it. I'm still finding out
