Kenwood D-700 APRS Speech Contest (deadline extended)

Keith Sproul <ksproul@...>

The deadline is September 18th. Please send in your entries.

===================================================================
==== Kenwood D700 APRS(tm) Speech Message Contest ====
===================================================================

The Kenwood TM-D700 Radio has the ability to have a speech synthesizer
added to it. If you add this option, you can make the D700 'SPEAK' or
actually 'SPELL' APRS messages.

When you send a message to a D700 with the VS-3 Speech chip, it will SPELL
the call sign of the station that sent the message.

In addition to this, if you put a percent sign '%' as the FIRST character
of a message, it will SPELL the letters and numbers of the message.

For example, if I send the following message from WU2Z to WB4APR,

%ICU2

Bob will hear:

DOUBLE-YOU YOU TWO ZED I SEE YOU TOO

We are announcing a contest to see what kind of messages people can come
up with for using this neat feature of the Kenwood TM-D700 radio and the
VS-3.

===================================================================
Rules for the contest:

* There will be three categories:

The LONGEST message that makes sense.

The MOST TECHNICAL message.

The most original or funniest message.

* The winners will be announced at the ARRL Digital Communications
Conference in Orlando, FL, September 23, 2000.

* Each winner will receive a $50 gift certificate from Kenwood Radio.

* APRS Authors and Kenwood employees are not eligible.

* The judges will be the APRS Authors and Kenwood personnel that are
present at the September 2000, ARRL DCC in Orlando, FL.

* All decisions of the judges will be final.

* All entries must be sent by email ksproul@... by September
18th, or delivered in person at the DCC.

* PLEASE put D700 CONTEST as the subject of the email!!!

* You must have a valid Amateur Radio License to enter.

* You do NOT need to own a Kenwood D700 or VS-3 to enter.

* You do NOT need to be a registered user of any version of APRS to enter.

* You do NOT need to be present at the ARRL DCC to win.

* In case of a tie, i.e. exact or very similar duplicate message the
earliest received entry will win.

* In case of other ties, the judges opinions will determine the winner.

* All entries can be used by Kenwood and/or the APRS authors for demo
and/or advertising purposes. All entries will be posted on the Web after
the contest, with your call sign to give you credit.

* Entries that imply profanity or inappropriate content will be ignored.

===================================================================

The documentation for the Speech functions of the D700 are at:

http://aprs.rutgers.edu/D700Voice.html

There is also a copy of it at:

http://dorm.rutgers.edu/~ksproul/D700Voice.html

(If one is down, try the other, I will keep them both updated)

If you have questions about this contest, or how the Voice option works,
please send email to me at: ksproul@...

As questions come in, I will update the documentation if needed.

You may distribute this announcement to other places, but you must leave
it exactly as is.

Re: Multiple NMEA output

I have done this with a GPS III+ and a different "home-brew" GPS unit.
Seems to be working fine. I have run my D-700/D-7 and my laptop running
SA and have not noticed any problems.

I have this idea that I might like to use my Garmin GPS III+ so that
I can use it with both my D700 and very occasionally with a laptop
running Map 'n' Go. The book with the GPS III+ indicates that it
will drive up to 3 NMEA devices simultaneously. I am thinking of
splicing the seriel cable such that I could leave the cable hooked to
my D700 all of the time and attach a serial cable to my serial port
on my PC when I want to use it for navigation.

My question is this -- Has anyone else done this? Can anyone think
of a reason that it won't work?

Kan iemand mij wellicht helpen aan de handleiding van de TMD700E en dan nog het
liefst in het Nederlands ? Ik heb namelijk een TMD700E gekocht bij de firma in
Katwijk, echter zonder handleiding.
Alvast dank

Re: Multiple NMEA output

Samuel Barker <srbarker@...>

I've done this with a Garmin GPS 35, and it works fine.  I have the gps wired to my D700, and a DB9 spliced off from that (or is the radio connector spliced from the DB9?  Either way).  I run a Topo mapping program on a laptop, and APRS through the D700 simultaneously.

Re: VS-3 and aprs

Keith Sproul <ksproul@...>

Go MENU, and look at the options for the VOICE..

There is a SPEAK ALL and SPEAK APRS ONLY options..

When someone sends you a message it SHOULD say the call sign of the sender..

Also, if the message starts with '%', it should spell the message..

Check out:

http://dorm.rutgers.edu/~ksproul/D700Voice.html

What do I have to set in the D700 to have the voice synthesizer read out the
callsigns and messages in the aprs mode?

It does speak the commands, but does not work with the aprs information.

I visit this site and found Md700100.exe file i download it and its working
fine. If you dont could download it i send you by mail. Thank for your
interesting. 73s form EB4CPK

Re: Control Software

Philip Yanov <phil@...>

The software MD700100.exe is usually available via the Kenwood ftp
site. (ftp.kenwood.net) The problem is that the site has been down
today. This is the first time I have ever seen it down, but it is a
bit frustrating.

If you are in a hurry, send me an email, and I will reply with the
file. It is just over 1MB in size, so it will take a little while to
download if you do not have high-speed internet access. -73 KG4FOZ

There was a post earlier about someone getting muddy audio when using
cross-band repeat. I too am having this problem. Looks like a
design flaw.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Garmin Emap <> D700

Philip Yanov <phil@...>

You end up having to look at a couple of different pictures to be
sure, but yes you are correct. The tip of the 2.5 mm connector is pin
2, the middle sleeve is 3, and the last is pin 5.

Re: GPS & 700A

Philip Yanov <phil@...>

As you probably gathered from the replies, there is a good bit of
personal preference in your choice of GPS. I have dedicated a GPS
III+ to the use of my D700. An advantage of the III+ over the Steet
Pilot is that the GPS III+ accepts waypoint data from the D700. This
means that stations that you receive via APRS on the D700 are plotted
on the scrolling map display of the GPS III+. The beauty of this is
that you have a scrolling map of stations received without having to
have a computer with you as well. This feature does not work with
the Street Pilot and would be reason enough for me not to use the
Street Pilot for my D700. [KG4FOZ]

With
those units, what features do they have? I'd like the positioning
info, but also like to use mapping features for navigation. I'm
looking at the GPS III Plus adn the Street Map units. If anyone
has
input, I'd appreciate it!

People.

There are still quite a lot of users accessing the MB7UIV website through
either:

http://www.keith.btinternet.co.uk/gb7uiv
http://www.keith.btinternet.co.uk/mb7uiv
http://www.btinternet.com/~keith/gb7uiv
http://www.btinternet.com/~keith/mb7uiv

Although these links still do work, they will go in the next week or so, and
after that all you'll get is a 404 error. To access the MB7UIV web site
please use the direct URL of:

http://www.mb7uiv.co.uk

If you have favourites/bookmarks set to any of the first four, please change
them to read the last one.

I know I've posted this change of URL here before, but as there are still a
lot using the old one, I felt it prudent to repost again.

Thanks.

Garming Emap <> D700

Steve Siesel <steve@...>

Greetings,

I am going to interface my Garmin Emap with the data cable
which has a DB9 pin female connector to my soon
to arrive D700 radio. After looking at the docs, I am a little
confused and looking for
help from others who may have done this.

Obviously the ground is common to both connectors.
From the outer sleeve of the
2.5 mm connector to pin 5 on a DB9 male.

Now, does the Data in on the D700 (Tip on the 2.5 mm connector)
go to pin 2 on the DB9?

and

the Data Out on the D700 ( Inner Sleeve) goto pin 3 on the DB9?

Or do I have this reversed.

Any help would be appreciated.
