Re: Dual Tone?

hazmatt1981

Wow.. ok that makes alot of sence (as to why someone would do it with
a repeater network). Everyone can always hear if they are within
earshot of the repeater (so to speak).

Do you care to enlighten as to how you are doing split tone on both
your VX-7R and TM-700A? As none of us can figure out the 700A, and
I'm curious about the VX-7R. And no the solution of 'use two channels
one with the encode and one with the decode.' doesn't count :P

and so
on. As you can see when a repeater is keyed up everyone can hear the
conversation. The input tones are changed depending on what
repeater you
are closest to not the channel. There are lost of ways to do the
same thing
... but there are radio with limited channels but have to ability to
dial in
a different tone. Rod

Well, it wouldn't suprise me if you can't. I dunno why... My HTX-202
lets me do split tones. But my VX-7R and apparently this rig, don't.
Granted, dunno why a repeater would do split tones.. but there is
indeed one in our area that does.. so it drives me a little crazy...
more so on the HT as I'm moving around computers and such hehe :)

yeah I thought about that. I'd rather forego the inbound PL though
then do that.. why tie up 2 channels to make a single QSO :) Yes that
works.. but it's a nasty hack hehe.

I can do split tones with my VX-7R and TM-D700A. ( dunno why a repeater

output
the T setting when in CTCSS mode? I ask because in CTCSS mode
it
works great on single tone repeaters (ones that accept and
output the

it
tries to put out the CTCSS tone (not a big deal).

Remote Control Repeater Defaults to Lock Band?!

hazmatt1981

Hi,
Sorry for so many questions... newbie to the D700.. Great radio..
does alot... maybe that's why so many questions :)

Anywhoo... when in 'remote control' mode... when I turn the repeater
on it seems to default to 'Lock-Band'.. which is kinda useless. Is
there anyway to get it to default to 'Cross-Band'? I can manually
turn it on to Cross-Band and that works, but then it's not in remote
control mode! ARG!

Re: Dual Tone?

hazmatt1981

Well, it wouldn't suprise me if you can't. I dunno why... My HTX-202
lets me do split tones. But my VX-7R and apparently this rig, don't.
Granted, dunno why a repeater would do split tones.. but there is
indeed one in our area that does.. so it drives me a little crazy...
more so on the HT as I'm moving around computers and such hehe :)

tries to put out the CTCSS tone (not a big deal).

Show "details" automagically?

Peter G. Viscarola

When an APRS beacon or status is received, the D700 briefly displays (a
half-screen of) info about the received becon. Also, a button choice to
show the "detail" of the beacon appears. Pushing this shows a full
screen of info (including coordinates, distance, or whatever).

My question: Is there any way to have this detail screen displayed
automagically each time a new beacon is received?

I suspect the answer to this is "no", but I figured I'd ask those with
more experience...

Yes there is. The procedure is not documented and quite confusing,
but I've
tested it myself and it *does* work.

Just so the terminology is clear, I'll use Tone-In to refer to "CT"
mode and
Tone-Out to refer to "T" mode. When the radio is set for Tone-In
mode, it
also puts the tone out (so "CT" mode is actually both In & Out).

From the front panel, go into T mode, then T-Sel to set your
Tone-Out. Now
go into CT mode and T-Sel again to set your Tone-In. Note that these
*CAN*
be different, it just won't be clear from the display.

Once done, when you're in CT mode, the radio will output the
Tone-Out tone
you set while in T mode, but require the Tone-In you set while in CT
mode.
They can most assuredly be different.

If you use the PC software (I use Link700 myself) you'll notice separate
dropdowns to select different "Tone" (Tone-Out) & "CTCSS" (Tone-In)
frequencies, but you set one mode or another (think of it as
"Tone-Out-only"
or "Both").

Brad.

Is there anyway to have the D700A both send a tone when transmitting
and also only open squelch when it hears a tone? I seem to be able to
set one or the other but not both!

Re: GPS list

Frank or Barbara Rossi <n3flr@...>

I use the Garmin GPS-35HVS
Have it running mobile going on 3 years now with the optional magnet mount.
The HVS model comes with bare wires and works from 6 to 40 volts,
_regulator is in the unit_.
This is a lot like the GPS-18, kinda like a computer mouse with no buttons.
http://www.garmin.com/products/gps35/
This unit use to be hard to find, it was meant to be an OEM GPS in other
equipment.
Garmin would only sell them by the case. I found mine at Dayton 3 years ago.
Was $179.00 3 years ago, a bit pricey but GPS prices have come down
since then.

Here is another idea.
I have a friend here in the Pittsburgh Pa Area, (AA3VO) with a GM car
with the On-Star system.
After the one year subscription ran out he could not see renewing it
because he has VHF UHF and APRS in the car, plus a cell phone.
The other problem with this GM car is that it has the metallic tinted
windshield that RF don't want to go through.
Forget putting the GPS on the dash.
He decided he wanted to find the On-Star GPS unit, so he dug into the
car and found it.
He found it to be a Motorola GPS unit with a DB9 plug on it.
Now he uses that for his APRS, works great.
I don't know all the answers to any questions regarding the On-Star
equipment, but I'm sure AA3VO can answer those for you.

The first one will not work on the D700A because it does not output
NMEA data; it outputs Garmin proprietary data. The second two models
do output NMEA. The PC version needs an adaptor to convert the DB-9

I have the LVC model and managed to wire it up so that I can either
plug it into the laptop to change settings on the GPS-18 or plug it into
the D700A. In the end it was easier to build a small interface box to
handle power and serial signal.

I like Kenwood's software better, but the Link700 allows you to program
both a D700 and D7A.

I'm wanting to program my D700A with the computer. Is the free
Kenwood software better or LINK700?? Are there any setup files you
can share with me for each program?? I will use it with APRS/GPS and
also with an external tnc sometimes for packet etc.

Thank you
