Re: Scratches on display

I realize that you already have some minor marks and hopefully they are
not too bad. I use a Palm PDA quite a bit and they sell a pack of
protective plastic sheets for the face of the Palm that I have used on my
mobile D700 display. It's just a stronger version of the protective sheet
that comes on a new unit. I have found that although it's not perfect, it
does quite well in protecting the face from the little dings we all try to
avoid.

I'm wondering what others have done about scratches on the display of
their D700's. I know Kenwood will not sell replacement control heads,
but I'm wondering if it is possible just to replace the
plastic face? Also, do plastic polishes work or is it some kind of
hardened or special plastic that cannot really be polished?

At this point I only have a few pretty minor marks on mine but just
curious what my options are for down the road. Thanks.

You can replace the front plastic cover. Pacific Coast Parts handles Kenwood
Amateur radio parts and Service Manuals.
The front glass is $6.02 and Service manual is $20. Off course shipping is
extra. They also have the brackets and most cables.
The manuals are cheaper there than at the dealers.

hELLO,

Can anyone exlpain the use of these TNC commands. I am assuming that
they provide a way to handle NTS messages yet I am not sure. The
manual indicates that they are used for making $PNTS sentences. What
is this?

Your help is appreciated.

Try a little Brasso metal polish. Apply a bit with a Q-Tip, and gently rub with a clean finger.

Has worked for me with HT displays, plastic digital watch faces, et al.

Available at Home Depot in the "cleansers" aisle.

I'm not sure I'd recommend polishing the faceplate. If you look at it
closely, you can see it's not a smooth, shiny surface - it's anti-glare. If
you polish it, I think you'll make that area quite noticeable.

Discriminator

Does the TM-D700 provide discriminator output(s) on any port of the radio or would I need to install one myself?

Thanks!

Wiring

There wouldn't happen to be anyone that would have a
wiring diagram to build a new cable from the 3/32
connection to the GPS. I also want to include a line
for constant power to the GPS. (Actually it would be
just a cigarette power plug) My long legs got the
best of the old 3/32 connection the other day. Broke
it right in half. :(

Any help would be grateful.

Thanks,

Poor AM Audio

backseatboogie <paul@...>

I wonder if anyone has tried modifying their 700A to improve the
audio on the AIR band. It seems that a narrow filter is used rather
than say a 6kHz filter which you typically would have on a scanner or
HF rig. Thanks.

This is really lame.

My best guess is it has to do with the fact that every time I get
out
of the truck I disconnect the face and put it away, as I don't
want
it to be a reason for someone to break in. (Here in Mexico.)

I had the same problem with mine, after the 1st replacement it
worked fine for a few months, then quit again. I returned it to the
dealer who replaced the fuse, but then took the time to thoroughly
check it out, and blew the fuse 2 or 3 more times! It turned out
that the pins from the components on the bottom of the circuit
boards had not been sufficiently trimmed at the factory and were
occasionaly making contact with the case, grounding and blowing the
fuse.

Subject: Help!

I have recently got a TM-D700e with a view to using the GPS on air. However I find I dont understand the jargon in the handbook (must be getting old or just a bit thick!). I have a Garmin street pilot (old orange screen not colour) this has a four pin data socket on the rear which I use for uploading maps to the gps from my pc and also in the car to provide power from a seperate lead. I know I need a lead to go from the rig to the GPS but not sure what pins are what or indeed which is needed for power as I still need that as well!

As I said previously I dont understand the jargon in the handbook for the rig so could do with some help to set up if some one can give it to me in plain english!

I am also on APRS one the web and have that running ok but not with the GPS connected.
Can anyone out there help me get this going please?

Many thanks
