As you probably gathered from the replies, there is a good bit of
personal preference in your choice of GPS. I have dedicated a GPS III+ to the use of my D700. An advantage of the III+ over the Steet Pilot is that the GPS III+ accepts waypoint data from the D700. This means that stations that you receive via APRS on the D700 are plotted on the scrolling map display of the GPS III+. The beauty of this is that you have a scrolling map of stations received without having to have a computer with you as well. This feature does not work with the Street Pilot and would be reason enough for me not to use the Street Pilot for my D700. There are still quite a lot of users accessing the MB7UIV website through either: http://www.keith.btinternet.co.uk/gb7uiv http://www.keith.btinternet.co.uk/mb7uiv http://www.btinternet.com/~keith/gb7uiv http://www.btinternet.com/~keith/mb7uiv Although these links still do work, they will go in the next week or so, and after that all you'll get is a 404 error. To access the MB7UIV web site please use the direct URL of: http://www.mb7uiv.co.uk If you have favourites/bookmarks set to any of the first four, please change them to read the last one. I know I've posted this change of URL here before, but as there are still a lot using the old one, I felt it prudent to repost again. Garming Emap <> D700
Steve Siesel <steve@...>
Greetings,
I am going to interface my Garmin Emap with the data cable which has a DB9 pin female connector to my soon to arrive D700 radio. After looking at the docs, I am a little confused and looking for help from others who may have done this. Obviously the ground is common to both connectors. From the outer sleeve of the 2.5 mm connector to pin 5 on a DB9 male. Now, does the Data in on the D700 (Tip on the 2.5 mm connector) go to pin 2 on the DB9? and the Data Out on the D700 ( Inner Sleeve) goto pin 3 on the DB9? Or do I have this reversed. Any help would be appreciated. 73 - Steve

I'm using the Rand McNally. $79.00@ best-buy and they printed a $20 rebate
at checkout. Works OK with my 700. I posted the interconnect a week or so ago. So far it is working great and seems to be accurate. Jim Murray KC5QWG

I can not say that it is the best but the GPS III+ works for me. I also have
US roads and recreation, maps are good only drawback 1 to 3 counties at a time. A GPS like the III+ gives you a lot more than just your position. Hope this helps 73 John N1FLO Attleboro MA

With those units, what features do they have? I'd like the positioning info, but also like to use mapping features for navigation. I'm looking at the GPS III Plus adn the Street Map units. If anyone has input, I'd appreciate it! 73, Howard, N2JIH

I would have tried this except that the doggone thing works in other ways, therefore my conclusion is that the module is working. Have you tried putting your voice module in another D700?Nope, not too many out yet. There are about a dozen of them here in Raleigh. Have you tried setting it to always use voice? Yep, no workie-workie. Have you checked the connector for the chip? (I'll assume you got it in theYep, no problem there - also , remeber the voice synth DOES work... yepperdo. On another note, I called Kenwood this morning and spoke with a Clifford fellow who was very helpful. He suggested that I reset the microprocessor, and re-program the EEPROM using the PC software package. No one else has reported the problem. I mentioned that I had a low serial number (bought it in January), and he said that there haven't been any rev changes at this time. I'll let you all know how that works...when I can find time to grab one of my laptops and run it. Off to Anchorage in a few hours for a few days. Oh, for a D7G for the weekend... (they expect it to talk for _everything_). I understand your venting need because I just happened to be the latest person to reply to your cry for help. I KNOW THIS. YOU CAN READ THE MANUAL TOO, JUST LIKE ME. Again, MINE doesn't work this way. I'm trying to find out why. It SHOULD work this way, but it DOESN'T. sheesh! I'm sorry, but this is like the eighth message with exactly the same information that won't help me. <snip>end vent<snip> Something is not right...it's a VS-3...again, it should work, but it doesn't...it won't announce an incoming message to me/for me/addressed to N2XL, or for that matter anything other than a frequency or menu setting. Bottom line, it's useless for APRS to me. Why won't it work as the manual suggests? Are there different versions of the VS-3?? Maybe I really just need to call Kenwood. Thanks to anyone that can help. Todd Ellis, N2XL Raleigh, NC
