I KNOW THIS. YOU CAN READ THE MANUAL TOO, JUST LIKE ME. Again, MINE
doesn't work this way. I'm trying to find out why. It SHOULD work
this way, but it DOESN'T. sheesh! I'm sorry, but this is like the
eighth message with exactly the same information that won't help me.

<snip>end vent<snip>
Just like I have no idea what you have tried and what responses
you have received; you also have no idea how many times (over a
dozen) that people have asked me how the voice stuff works and
still don't get it. (they expect it to talk for _everything_). I
understand your venting need because I just happened to be the
latest person to reply to your cry for help.

Beyond calling kenwood (which it sounds like you should), does
the voice work at all? Have you tried a different voice module (if
available)? Have you tried putting your voice module in another
D700? Have you tried setting it to always use voice? Have you
checked the connector for the chip? (I'll assume you got it in the
right way, cuz I don't think it fits the wrong way), etc.

Other than that, it's up to kenwood (or someone else on the list).

Something is not right...it's a VS-3...again, it should work, but it
doesn't...it won't announce an incoming message to me/for me/addressed to
N2XL, or for that matter anything other than a frequency or menu setting.
Bottom line, it's useless for APRS to me. Why won't it work as the manual
suggests? Are there different versions of the VS-3?? Maybe I really just
need to call Kenwood.

Thanks to anyone that can help.

Even though I am telling the radio to use the voice chip for APRS
ONLY, it is not announcing incoming messages. I received a lot of
nice assistance from folks on htaprs, but most did not own a D700 and
read my manual for me. I know how it is supposed to work, why DOESN'T
it work? Anyone have a clue?

The D700 will only announce messages destined for you. And then
it will announce the call of the sending station.

ARRL DCC & Kenwood D-700 APRS Speech Contest

Keith Sproul <ksproul@...>

===================================================================
==== Kenwood D700 APRS(tm) Speech Message Contest ====
===================================================================

The Kenwood TM-D700 Radio has the ability to have a speech synthesizer
added to it. If you add this option, you can make the D700 'SPEAK' or
actually 'SPELL' APRS messages.

When you send a message to a D700 with the VS-3 Speech chip, it will SPELL
the call sign of the station that sent the message.

In addition to this, if you put a percent sign '%' as the FIRST character
of a message, it will SPELL the letters and numbers of the message.

For example, if I send the following message from WU2Z to WB4APR,

%ICU2

Bob will hear:

DOUBLE-YOU YOU TWO ZED I SEE YOU TOO

We are announcing a contest to see what kind of messages people can come
up with for using this neat feature of the Kenwood TM-D700 radio and the
VS-3.

===================================================================
Rules for the contest:

* There will be three categories:

The LONGEST message that makes sense.

The MOST TECHNICAL message.

The most original or funniest message.

* The winners will be announced at the ARRL Digital Communications
Conference in Orlando, FL, September 2000.

* Each winner will receive a $50 gift certificate from Kenwood Radio.

* APRS Authors and Kenwood employees are not eligible.

* The judges will be the APRS Authors and Kenwood personnel that are
present at the September 2000, ARRL DCC in Orlando, FL.

* All decisions of the judges will be final.

* All entries must be sent by email ksproul@... by September
1st, or delivered in person at the DCC.

* PLEASE put D700 CONTEST as the subject of the email!!!

* You must have a valid Amateur Radio License to enter.

* You do NOT need to own a Kenwood D700 or VS-3 to enter.

* You do NOT need to be a registered user of any version of APRS to enter.

* You do NOT need to be present at the ARRL DCC to win.

* In case of a tie, i.e. exact or very similar duplicate message the
earliest received entry will win.

* In case of other ties, the judges opinions will determine the winner.

* All entries can be used by Kenwood and/or the APRS authors for demo
and/or advertising purposes. All entries will be posted on the Web after
the contest, with your call sign to give you credit.

* Entries that imply profanity or inappropriate content will be ignored.

===================================================================

The documentation for the Speech functions of the D700 are at:

http://aprs.rutgers.edu/D700Voice.html

There is also a copy of it at:

http://dorm.rutgers.edu/~ksproul/D700Voice.html

(If one is down, try the other, I will keep them both updated)

If you have questions about this contest, or how the Voice option works,
please send email to me at: ksproul@...

As questions come in, I will update the documentation if needed.

You may distribute this announcement to other places, but you must leave
it exactly as is.

Re: APRS

Samuel Barker <srbarker@...>

Take a look at the ARRL website, you should be able to find some good information there.  www.arrl.net.

Also, the AMSAT-NA site has loads of good info on most of the birds, take a look there.  www.amsat.org.

There is an article in the newest QST magazine that lays out some simple operating procedures on UO-14, and has some info on SO-35 as well.  I highly recommend that article.  I’ve had pretty good luck with SO-35, and not so good with UO-14.

I would suggest starting with SO-35.  It’s a pretty easy bird to work, so the frustration level will be a little lower.  Good satellite to cut your teeth on (I’m still in that mode myself).  The best place to go for SO-35 info is the SunSat web page.  http://sunsat.ee.sun.ac.za/index.html.  You’ll find some pretty detailed operating instructions there, as well as the voice pass schedule.

Hello is there anyone that can help me with information how to
modified the TM-D700a for tx on the Australia CB Band (476 MHz),I know
the green wire and resistor but that goes only to 470MHz cheers all.
de Art Down-Under
Look at the mods pages (or search), but I think it involves removing
a resistor along with the wire.

(I have not tested or seen it done, BTW).

Has anyone else noticed that their crossbanded audio from the d700 is all
muffled? The audio at the 2m repeater you trying to work is as if you are
talking with a sock in your mouth.

I have tried both in locked band and cross band mode, and with the d700
microphone connected and disconnected, and with the mute function on and
with it off to no avail. Compared to other rigs I have heard in cross
band, this one sounds obvious you are crossbanding, whereas other rigs sound
about as clean as the original audio. Any thoughts?

Re: TM-D700 & Winaprs

Rick Giguere <rick@...>

I'm using it with no problem.

* Set the radio for TNC, not aprs.
* Be careful of port speed - don't change the defaults on the radio.
* I use the "Kenwood DC" selection from the TNC window without any
changes.

I've used it from both my laptop and my desktop ... used it Field Day with
the laptop for over 24 hrs and it never even burped.
