Wanted D-710A control head or PC board

Joe Dietrick

Anyone have one for sale, reasonably priced and good condition?

Alternatively, is there a replacement PC board? Looks like most items are plug & play on it. Saw a site called PacParts which looks like they used to have them.

Dog dumped the box with the radio and a few other (heavier) items, and bashed a knob breaking the circuit board.  Yep, should have boxed it carefully.

Thanks,

Joe, KC0NOX

Re: PTT Intermittant

Randy Allen

I had a similar problem a few years ago with my TM731A, using the same mike (with a different connector, bought it aftermarket) as on the D700. IIRC The spring under the PTT button had sawed it's way through a cushion inside the mic. Bought replacement parts from Kenwood and no issues since then.

Can't find any of the documentation or related e-mails right now, but is something to look at if you determine the issue is with the mic.

using the packet terminal though. It transmits every time. Has anyone
had this problem before? I'm curious if its a physical issue with the
switch or its going brain dead.

Many years ago, I replaced the keypads in two of that style Kenwood mic for a blind ham. My memory is a bit foggy on this, but I do recall that the face keys used a carbon like product on the back of the membrane for conductivity. I believe the PTT was a small, mechanically actuated switch soldered to a simple PC board in the back of the mic, so cleaning may be effective if that board were removed for isolated cleaning. The replaced parts were inexpensive, easy to obtain & easy to install.

Spray some Deox-It electronic cleaning solution into the PTT switch or carefully disassemble it, clean the contacts, apply some Deox-It as a final step before reassembly.

The PTT switch contacts may have developed some oxidation over time, or some foreign substance got in there, or both (or maybe just worn out).

If you know someone with a TM-D700A or another Kenwood that uses the same mic, try a different mic and see if you get the same problem.

Short answer - no.  The D700 was never designed to have any firmware upgrades.

The only thing that someone might be able to build, using the Service Manual documentation, would be a replacement TNC mini-card but nobody has even hinted at that either.  So the D700 is what it is...no more, no less...

Bill,

Thanks for the link and info. Well versed in the site as I have a TM-V7A (yes it still works!) and a TH-D72A for a few years. Used to check it frequently for updates before joining the TH-D72 yahoo group. Revisited the site to download the programming software that was used to update the memory channels on the D700A.

No updates are listed for this radio. But it was an excellent question to ask about. It is a great radio as is.

Dont forget to explore Kenwoods SkyCommand feature that the TMD-700AG radio does support. Interface it to a Kenwood HF radio such as the TS-480HX that runs 200 watts on hf, and with the Kenwood TH-D7AG or TH-D72AG walkie talkies, you can do HF with your HT. Great for emergency support and load of fun just to take a walk and check into a twenty meter usb net control station as a pedestrian mobile. This is NOT cross-banding .... the HT will have remote control of the hf radio with a lot of its feature. Change modes, bands, frequency etc etc all from the HT, and no computer is require. You can even turn the hf rig on and off.
