Topic:  Low Band Vertical Antenna Decisions at N4XL
Description:  A problem with “common wisdom” is ambiguity. It is well known the vertical portion of an Inverted-L should be as tall as possible, and that you should put as many radials in the ground around it as you can. That an elevated vertical with two radials performs nearly as well as a ¼ wave ground mount with 120 radials. K9YC advises ‘Do not let your inability to erect a perfect antenna keep you from putting up an effective one.’ W8JI has said a properly installed 160 meter Inverted-L can work DX in the South Pacific from the Southeast United States. Encouraged, N4XL set out to significantly improve low band contest scores from his modest station. Can a 65 ft tall tree support an effective 160 meter antenna? Burying radials in clay is hard work. How many are enough? Do only two radials on an elevated vertical work as well as they say? Would four be better? How high should an elevated vertical be?  Clay is not salt water, so is it even worth trying a vertical in upstate South Carolina? Not having the antenna modeling skills that would have made the task simpler, he drew on resources such as N6LF, ON4UN, K2AV, and the ARRL to answer those questions.
