TLARC,

I’m taking orders for ARRL 2019 Field Day shirts.  You can view them at https://www.arrl.org/shop/Field-Day-Shirt-Pocket-Tee-2019/.  They’re charcoal with yellow/white lettering and come in sizes small to 6X.  Cost is $17.95, plus I’ve added on $2.05 for shipping.  (Shipping is $12.50 for orders of $50 or more.)  Let me know the size you want (small to 6X) and bring your check for $20, payable to TLARC, to the meeting on Wed May 15.  See you then.  73

Small Battery for Portable Ops

George N2APB

I have a small, new-in-the-box, "Viking" Lithium-Ion power pack (battery) from Harbor Freight that is perfect for powering a low-power transceiver (HF or vhf/uhf), charging your HT or cell phone out in the field, or for use as a strong flashlight.

It's rated at 12,000 mA-hr capacity and claims to also being able to jump start your car (which is all specmanship), but it works great for our ham radio purposes.  Being Lithium-based, it charges fast, has no "memory" on capacity, and delivers full power up to a cliff drop-off point.

(I already have one like this and it powers my QRP radio (FT-817) all day long on receive as I do the day job here in the shack.  I wanted another as a backup, so I took advantage of a good deal from Harbor Freight.  Meanwhile, I purchased a different battery (LiFePO4 chemistry), which is more expensive and greater size and capacity but it suits my needs a bit better ... which is why I now want to sell this Viking power pack ... below cost.)

Anyway, it's item # 62749 at Harbor Freight <https://www.harborfreight.com> and a photo of the battery is attached here.  As you see, it's on sale for $64 (regularly $79) ... but you can buy it from me for $50.  The box has never been opened, and also contains a nice carry case, and some hand jumpers & adapters.  I'm here' in Tellico Village for quick 'n easy pickup.  No shipping charge! ;)

Let me know if interested.

PS:  Our club president has one of these Viking power packs and likes using it.  I stand behind it as well.

Good morning,

The May meeting of the Tellico Lake Amateur Radio Club is just around the corner. Please check your schedules, and if you have anything booked for the evening of May 15th, cancel it. We’re going to start the planning for Field Day 2019, the biggest weekend of the year for hams, so anything else will just have to wait.

The gastronomes amongst us will meet up for some Italian food and fine conversation at Little Italy at 316 Lakeside Plaza at 5:15 PM. The dinner time has been moved up 15 minutes from the past to ensure we all have time to relax, eat, and make the meeting on time.

Attached are the draft minutes of the April TLARC meeting for your review.

Thanks,

David Andrews, N1ESK

Kenwood TS-520 SSB Transceiver Available

Brad (the Voice of the Village) Berger

Fellow TLARC members,

In my possession is a Kenwood TS-520 transceiver in the box. It covers 3.5 - 29.7 MHz (80 thru 10 meters) and has an internal power supply and I have a mic for it.
Here is more detailed information: http://www.rigpix.com/kenwood/ts520.htm

It has been recently tested by fellow TLARC member Dave Johnson AE0E and here are his findings:

Brad,

Power output on the TS520 in CW is as follows (into a dummy load).  It appears the finals (6146 tubes) are probably okay though extended use for several hours would be a better test.  (Power drop as frequency goes up is fairly typical).  I also looked at the transmit signal with my spectrum analyzer and it looks clean.

80 Meters: 103 Watts

40 Meters: 98 Watts

20 Meters: 93 Watts

15 Meters: 89 Watts

10 Meters: 83 Watts

If anyone can use this radio for themselves, they may have it. The intent is for you to get on-the-air and not someone else or for it to be sold. Let me know if you're interested.  Brad  KM4OJK

TLARC,

Alternate location is the weather is not cooperating is the Tugaloo Beach cabana at noon. QRP to the field will coincide with the Michigan QSO Parry. The TLARC repeater will be monitored during the event.

Good morning, TLARC.

The weather forecast for tomorrow is looking quite miserable and I'm cancelling my participation in the QRP To The Field event. The predicted 50 degree high temperature isn't terrible, but the accompanying rain is a show-stopper for me. Have fun if you decide to set up at Lenoir City Park and operate.

Saturday, April 20 marks the traditional first major QRP field event of the year - QRP To The Field. Rules are available at this link:

This year's theme is "Any Ole Park" and the TLARC Field Nuts plan to activate at Lenoir City Park overlooking the Fort Loudoun Dam. No specific times but I would anticipate the afternoon hours being prime for 40 and 20 meter propagation.

This event partners with Summits On The Air so there should be a number of SOTA activations that day to provide additional contact opportunities. Not sure about low power operating? Come on out and see what can be done with a full QRP gallon - 5 watts CW or 10 watts SSB.

We hope to see you there - it's been a wet spring so let's hope for a nice day on the 20th!

Geo,

Can you send over a list of the folks who have signed onto the groups.io page? I’m trying to determine who has NOT signed up yet, to ensure they are receiving the club updates, and to encourage them to sign on.

What a great time we had on Saturday, April 6.  Some 14 members gathered at N2APB's home and assembled their GPS Clock Kits in the first-ever TLARC Workshop!  Eight of us got the kit built and working without a flaw, while 3 others had some repairable issues, and 3 others had time-crunch issues in completing theirs.

Those getting Gold Stars on their TLARC Certificates for participating in the Workshop include:  Dave N1ESK, Emily KB1NXN, Barry K8NWB, Brent K4BNN, David KN4LMM, George WB9TFR, Mike KK6OKU, Juan AC6ZM, Randy WK9M, Sam KV4XY, Gary KN4TRV (who just passed his General exam!), Alan K1AT, David KF4DKW and Jim K0RGI.

This has been an incredible accomplishment for all ... Way to go!

Results from the recent survey will also be presented.
