Zentralbahn Hergiswil double track

Martin Baumann

Approval has been given to double the section of the Zentralbahn from Hergiswil Matt to Hergiswil.  Part of this will include a deviation on which a new Hergiswil Matt station will be located.  The deviation will reduce the distance by 70 meters and is planned to open in December 2019. This will complete double track from Luzern to Hergiswil

Not yet. Double track will end in Hergiswil Matt. So two bits still missing:
1) Roughly 300 m at the entry of Luzern, between Langensandbrcke and the first point leading to tracks 12, 13, 14 and 15. Solution will be different levels for meter gauge and standard gauge tracks crossing there.
2) Hergiswil Matt - Hergiswil is thought to be a double track tunnel, expected to be more expensive than the rather complex solution in Luzern.

AFAIK, n 1 will be first to be realized, financing is under way.

The Hergiswil deviation opened today 18.11.2019 after a line closure between Luzern Allmend and Alpnachstad that started on 28.10. A helicopter was used to install the masts for the overhead wires

This is the last bit of a Luzern - Hergiswil improvement plan that had been taken into the list of urgent projects for suburban traffic by the national parliament in 2006. Most of the project was terminated by 2012, when the Allmend tunnel opened. But the bit in Hergiswil was delayed by lengthy discussions about possible alternatives, which finally proved too expensive but then again led to a better project in terms of noise protection and protection against flood. Now finally, after 13 years, it's there.

Can anyone point me to a map showing the course of the Hergiswil deviation?

Deviation is the wrong word. It's a doubling of the existing track. Double track ended at the exit of the tunnel from Horw and is now continued into Hergiswil Matt.

Between Luzern buffer stop and Hergiswil two bits are still single:

short bit within Luzern station: this will be doubled at quite high costs within the next years

Hergiswil Matt - Hergiswil: probably a tunnel is needed. Might be realized in the 2030ies...

Realignment might be the better word. Tight curves have disappeared to allow a max. speed of 90 km/h.
