Back in Sep 2016 I was quite surprised to see this loco turn up at Le Brassus with a motley selection of 3 coaches forming an ExtraZug from Vallorbe.

It was quite funny because there were no more than 10 or so people on the preceding RABDe560 service that I took and about 6 people got off the ExtraZug here, so not sure that another train was entirely necessary.

How commonly was it used on passenger services?

Only when the motor coach wasn't available. And that happened.

However, with the departure of the ex-MThB motor coach plus driving trailer (back to MThB it was no longer possible to use the locomotive in passenger service. There was no driving trailer around.

Was 420 503 not compatible with Travys NPZ driving trailers?

No, NPZ of private railways (565/566/567) have never been compatible with anything else. NPZ of SBB type (560/561/562) had been compatible but lost compatibility when modernized as NPZ Domino. Only the remaining, not modernized NPZs of SOB (561), OeBB, CJ and SBB (562) are still working on IIId MU type.

Of the originally 12 Bt driving trailers delivered together with "EAV" motor coaches, 3 were adapted for NPZ and could no longer be used with their original motor coaches. These three driving trailers were finally numbered 50 85 80-35 373 - 375.
