detailed 2 week freight observations Lötschberg route

Horribly late I’m afraid but time has run away from me due to circumstances - hope the info is useful to someone

Spent a week on holiday in the Visp area in April, and I ended up staying an extra week due to unforeseen circumstances. Therefore got quite a ‘close up’ view of how things run on the BLS route at present
The most notable thing was that, despite the current rebuild project on the BLS ‘mountain’ route (via the old tunnel) a significant number of freight trains go ‘over the top’ - some are clearly booked to do so on a regular basis - others appear to be pathed as traffic conditions dictate on the day.

Observations on the BLS Lötschberg route as follows. These were mainly lineside in the Visp / Brig area

Notes on directions quoted: northbound / southbound = a train known to be or assumed to be following the BLS north - south axis (ie Spiez - Brig); westbound / eastbound = a train known to be or assumed to be following the Valais route (ie Sion - Brig)

The Wetron I saw at Pratteln was hauled by Crossrail 186/9 pair

LKW Walter trailers singly mixed with other names (sbbc haulage, sometimes 474)
Block LKW Walter with BLSC 186+475 haulage (but was NOT totally Walter, there were some Ewals and Codognotto mixed in)
Same but with CLdNCargo/Ferrymasters mix
train with almost half the consist block Van Dijk containers (BLSC 465 haulage)
Ferrymasters, Transmec and Others mixed (DB 193 /3 haulage)
‘all Walter’ (SBBC 474 + 193/2 haulage)
‘all Walter’ (SBBC 193/4 + 193/2 haulage)
Samskip (BLS 475 haulage)
Ambrogio (BLS 465 pair haulage)
Ambrogio (single BLS 486 but at Pratteln))
Intermodaltrasporti block (BLS 425 brownie pair haulage)

In addition, 186 came through with 194 (on the front) and 193 (on the rear) on a short set.

The 420 diagrams contain an odd-looking pair of services that don’t appear in the online timetable. Anyone know if 220 / 221 actually run or not ?

They do appear. If you take the timetable from sbb.ch, search for Paris - Milano using the advanced search choosing "Direct connections with sleeping car"

Train EuroNight 201 Direction Venezia S. Lucia THELLO
arr 06:00 Milano Centrale

They are the Paris - Milan Thello night trains - the last vestige of north - south European night trains via Vallorbe. The locos sit at Vallorbe station during the day waiting for the next night On Tuesday, 2 July 2019, 22:25:59 BST, David Prior via Groups.Io <david.prior64=icloud.com@groups.io> wrote:

Is this because the trains have no stops in Switzerland?
How many Thello runs are there? Is it just Paris-Venice or is there still a Paris-Milano-Rome run?

Aha ... found them now : non-stop Dijon-Milano hence not on the “normal” SBB T/T.
Presumably hauled by the loco pool based in Brig (?).
Thanks to all for the info.

Re: Re 4/4 diagram query

Thello operates the nightly EN 220/221 Venice-Paris and three daily Milano-Nice, while SNCF operates three daily TGVs Paris-Milano with connection to Rome.

Usually, the Venice-Paris Thello operates via Modane on the nights Mo/Tu-Fr/Sa and via Vallorbe/Frasne on Sa/Su and Su/Mo, but there are sometimes exceptions to that rule. The Thello page does not give details on the particular route, the SNCF page does (for ex. https://www.sncf.com/fr/itineraire-reservation/recherche-numero-train/details-train/220?date=22%2F06%2F2019&codeCirculation=OCEBD000220F01001&codeZoneArret=OCE83025932).

Yesterday, the Mont-Cenis line was interrupted by a mudflow as a result of violent storms between St-Michel-de-Maurienne and Modane and will remain closed for several weeks. Yesterday night's EN 221 ended its run at Dijon. Thello has announced that it is looking for alternatives, which could include operating nightly via Vallorbe, while SNCF is looking at operating its TGVs either via Vallorbe or Ventimiglia.

Rgds, Thomas.

Railway Gazette is reporting that the ex-Cisalpino ETR 470 trainsets will be modified and transferred from FS to it's Greek subsidiary Trainose and will be used to provide service between Athens and Thessaloniki. The units will be modified to work with the 25kv 50Hz system in place.
Of the nine original trainsets, only six remain in operation.

No, only five remain (1, 4, 6, 7, 8). SBB owned four (2, 3, 5, 9) and scrapped them all, except four single cars of unit 9. First class end car is now with SBB Historic. Three cars of the second class end have been sold to FS and allowed to repair the damaged ETR 485.36

You are speaking about the role as RU in Switzerland, aren't you?

There is still another BLS involvement:

The Thello night trains always travel via Lötschberg when Vevey - Visp is closed for any reason. It has even happened that the train passed in front of our house, when also the Aaretal line (Bern - Thun) was closed. This was around 2 o'clock in the night.

At https://www.thello.com/en/paris-venice/traffic-information/ Thello informs that the weekend trains via Vallorbe will operate as scheduled. Bus substitution services between Paris, Dijon and Milano have been put in place for tonight and Monday night's services via Modane. Thello is still looking at alternatives for departures from July 9.
