Gotthard Mountain Route Cab Ride

John Lovda

I just returned from my eight day Swiss train riding trip that included a cab ride in an Re4/4 II (11191) pulling a southbound "Gotthard Weekender" train. The train actually started in Zürich but the cab ride began in Flüelen and ended in Bellinzona. It cost me CHF 490. Here are some of my better pictures:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/79976134@N07/albums/72157708995027437

The ride was two hours long and as you can see from the clocks in the pictures, went from 09:30 to 11:30. When it ended, it felt like fifteen minutes. My guide/escort was a younger fellow who drove FLIRTS. He was extremely nice and spoke very good English. I have been on this train ride as a passenger a dozen times as well as taking the bus to Wassen and walking up to the front door of the church to watch the trains go by. I really just wanted to see things from a different perspective. My guide tried to explain some of the basic features of the European track signaling system but a lot of it went in one ear and out the other. My brain was concentrating on the visual aspects. I was given an eight page brochure which highlighted the trip. I wish I had it a week before to know in advance what to look for. In terms of the experience I would rate it a 10/10 but as a value proposition it was about a 3-4/10. It was also disappointing to read in the brochure that the ride was stated as going from Arth-Goldau to Locarno so I missed at least another hour in the cab. On YouTube a Norwegian train driver recorded the entire eight hour ride from Trondheim to Bodo with a dashcam. You can watch it for free. Another interesting tidbit. After the ride ended, my guide traveled to Locarno with me (on a different train) since my plan for the day also included a ride on the Centivalli train. He showed me a great travel tip. If you ride in one of the "panorama" trains there is a single seat in the front of the train that is right next to the driver's booth. That section is First Class and it cost me CHF 8.50 to upgrade from my Second Class Swiss Travel Pass and claim the seat. Almost the same as the Gotthard ride but without a guide.

Thanks for the information. If Arth-Walchwil-Zug is out of service, I can simply extend my trip to Luzern and then to Zurich from there. I guess that there are also trains that stop at Rotkreuz where it should also be possible to change to the next Zurich bound train (from Luzern).

I will be travelling with a Rail Pass. I guess that I would still need a reservation for some trains.

What routes do I have the best chance to see or catch either a Twindexx or Giruno?

All trains from Arth-Goldau to Zürich go via Rotkreuz, where they change direction, because SBB considered it wouldn't be worth building the long-planned curve to go directly from Immensee in Zug direction. So, for about 18 months everybody will have the opportunity to contemplate the important station of Rotkreuz...

Only if you find the [R] sign in the timetable and this is very rare for inland traffic.

Twindexx: Wait anywhere in Switzerland and you will have the chance that a Twindexx will come by and brake down. My last encounter of this type was in Bern Wankdorf, where a Twindexx arrived as an Extra for a concert but couldn't take off again. My train was subsequently blocked too and cam home late. Don't know how the situation will be within one month...

Giruno: First commercial runs are Zürich - Erstfeld. That may change quickly. Ask again before you take off for Switzerland.

Twindexx are really a piece of junk. Years late, poor design, ... I had the misfortune to see one at Sissach on Good Friday on what used to be a proper hauled IC with 460 or Re4/4. To add insult to injury it blocked a good photo angle that I had lined up for a long freight hauled by a Vectron

I really cannot see the benefit of such units over IC2000 double deckers with class 460

A minor amendment to your English if I may Marcus: Breakdown (= mechanical failure) from break as in to smash something apart . Brake = A device for slowing or stopping a moving vehicle, or A thing that slows or hinders a process.

Thank you for the hint. Yes, the e is in the wrong position, although I'm normally aware of the difference between a brake and a break. It's quite an important difference in railway terms, if I may say so...

I can see the Zurich trains being Re 460 push-pull because of the direction change in Rotkreuz.
I am guessing that a number of the Basel and Luzern runs are using the same trains at different times of day.

Private Operators (Since 2005)

Shuttlewise run three services across Switzerland to and from Mortara (I).The current position on these is as follows.
The Ghent (B) service uses BLS traction in Swiz. and to/from Muttenz uses SNCF/Akiem 437s.The Krefeld (D) services also uses BLS traction in Swiz.normally 465s.These work through to Weil am Rhein. I don't know what the traction is north of there. The third service runs to Rotterdam (NL) and is SBBC hauled in Swiz. and to/from Muttenz (via Germany) is usually 189 hauled.

Hupac Vectron Locomotives

On Sat 1 June loks 193 491-8 and 492-6 were at Muttenz where the WRS loks normally stable.491 was still in Hupac livery but 492 is now plain blue. I did not see them working.

Thanks for the update. I still have not figured out who they are running for.
490/491 were reported to be in use of GTS. That may have changed after a few months.
492 had been stripped of it's Nightpiercer livery. I have not seen any news about new assignments
493 was blue with WRS markings. My understanding was that 493 was mainly for WRS operations in Germany.

I still don't know why SBB Cargo passed on these machines. I know that 494-497 were delayed so that they could be modified to be equivalent to the Re 475.
My guess is that there were too many differences between the Hupac Loks and the ELL and LokRoll units that SBB personnel are trained on.

A question regarding 193 492:

How many runs did this locomotive make in Switzerland? I have photos of it pulling a Ferrymasters container train along with a LokRoll 193.
Does anybody have any photos of other runs?

All except one pair reverse at Rotkreuz at least once either on their way in- or outbound journey.

Re: VAE new units

Martin Baumann

It was incorrect to say two diagrams would change from June 4th. So far only two units have been accepted and one is being used for crew training. One unit will be in limited passenger service and the trains are listed at

11303

11303 failed at Pratteln today while working train 1975 1413 Basel SBB-Zürich. The train was hauled back to Basel by the LRZ and passengers transferred to other services

Can we assume that an xx:24 arrival at Airolo will then depart on the next XX:40 service

blue/white EW I/II coaches? Then it's a "normal" push-pull set, where the driving trailer was replaced with a locomotive.
