Public Star Party at Peralta Trail Elementary School - Saturday, January 12, 2019

On Saturday, January 12th, we will host a regularly scheduled public star party at Peralta Trail Elementary School from 7:00 to 9:00pm.

In spite of our best efforts, the coming weekend looks partly cloudy. But that has never stopped us before.

We will again have a very nice waxing crescent Moon, approaching 1st quarter, along with Mars just above it. Neptune will be a little farther west and we hope to provide views of this colorful planet. Joining that pairing will be Uranus to the left (east) of the Moon, almost directly south at the beginning of the evening.
Jupiter will have already set and Venus is now in the morning sky. Orion will be rising and will be well placed for viewing all evening.

For a recap of the current status and schedule, visit: http://supermtnastro.com/  (Current schedule attached.)

The event will be at the same location as in the past, on the basketball court. But, please park in the school parking lot.

For a map with directions and instructions, visit: http://supermtnastro.com/maps-and-directions (Scroll down to the Peralta location). Dress warm, bring something to sit on (we have no seating), and bring a red covered flashlight. (We can help you with that.)

The directions to park in the school parking lot are intended for the visiting public. Members bringing telescopes and other equipment may drive through the gate and park in the observing area, i.e., the basketball court. Please arrive before dark.

For those needing handicap access, you may drive through the gate and park on the left, before reaching the observing area on the basketball court.
Although, in that case, we do ask that you arrive before dark so your headlights will not pose a distraction.

Star Party Status Update - Canceled

Special status update:  In spite of what appears to be a clearing farther to the west, it's what we call a "sucker hole".  Right behind it, everything turns to meh: https://www.wunderground.com/hourly/us/az/apache-junction/KAZAPACH4?cm_ven=localwx_hour

We are regrettably canceling this evening's Star Party at Peralta Trail Elementary School.

We look forward to seeing you on Sat. Feb 09 – Lost Dutchman State Park  7:00 – 9:00pm

As a reminder, this year we are planning to have several unscheduled events, such as Sun Parties (for solar observing) and a couple Moon Parties.

As usual, we will be located in the Saguaro Day Use area parking lot.

Revised Superstition Mountain Astronomical League 2018-2019 Schedule of Events (Rev. 1)

William Shaheen

Well, the dusting of snow on the mountains has been just lovely and we are hoping it's a sign of better weather to come.

So, we have revised this season's schedule of observing events to add make-up sessions for the star parties that were canceled due to the weather these past couple months.

We've added 3 events and changed the date for the June session.
Sat. Mar 09 - Peralta Trail Elementary School  7:30 – 9:30pm (Make-up session.) Sat. Apr 06 -  Lost Dutchman State Park           8:00 – 10:00pm (Make-up session.)
Sat. May 04 - Peralta Trail Elementary School  8:00 – 10:00pm (Make-up session.) Sat. Jun 08   - Lost Dutchman State Park           8:00 – 10:00pm (Revised from Jun 01.)

(Please see the attached revised schedule. Changes highlighted in red.)

The next star party is scheduled for Saturday, March 9th, at Peralta Trail Elementary School from 7:30 to 9:30pm. (Our customary, regular notice will be sent to the community on the Sunday prior.)

It's a little to early to try to predict what the weather will look like at that time. But, March typically shows improvement.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you under the stars.

Public Star Party at Peralta Trail Elementary School - Saturday, March 9, 2019

On Saturday, March 9, we will host a newly scheduled public star party at Peralta Trail Elementary School from 7:30 to 9:30pm.

At this point, the weather looks like it usually does this time of year (i.e., iffy). But, Saturday does show a possible break.

We will have a very nice thin, waxing crescent Moon showing craters in detail and possibly Earthshine (Earth's reflected sunlight illuminating the side of the Moon facing us). The constellation of Orion (The Hunter) will be very well placed for viewing, along with its surrounding attractions, such as the Orion nebula and constellations Gemini, Auriga and Canis Major, to name a few. This is a sky very rich in clusters and multiple star systems. And since the Moon is so thin and so far towards the West, we hope to have a prominently visible Milky Way. The planet Uranus will be just to the upper right of the Moon. Mars will make an appearance directly above the Moon when you are facing West.

For a recap of the current status and schedule, visit: http://supermtnastro.com/  (Current schedule attached.)

The event will be at the same Peralta Trail elementary school location as in the past, on the basketball court.

While at the website, be sure to check out our updated Meet the Astronomers page to see what they look like when not peering into an eyepiece, in the dark.

Tomorrow's Weather Forecast

Tomorrow's weather forecast is not very encouraging. But, you never know.

Before heading out to Peralta Trail Elementary, check your emails and/or visit the website: https://supermtnastro.com/

Of course, you can always look out the window. But, we sometimes make an appearance in spite of the weather. So, it's best to check first.

Peralta Trail Elementary Star Party re-scheduled to Saturday, March 16.

The March 9 event that was canceled due to weather has been rescheduled to Saturday, March 16th and renamed a Moon Party!

We will have what is known as a waxing gibbous Moon and as such you will see craters that many of you have not seen before.
In spite of the bright Moon, we will still be able to view the brighter stars and star clusters. But, the Moon itself will be a real treat.

We're excited about this new event and hope to see you "under the Moon".

As always, you can visit https://supermtnastro.com/ for further details.
