Date
Revised Superstition Mountain Astronomical League 2016-2017 Schedule of Events (Rev. 1)

William Shaheen <wjshaheen@...>

Well, we almost made it through the year without needing a revision.

But, we do need to delay the start time for the Mar 25th star party at Lost Dutchman State Park til 8pm.
And, we need to cancel the event scheduled for May 27th altogether.  (It's just too late in the spring and sunset isn't til 8:27pm.)

Please see the revised schedule at http://supermtnastro.com/ as well as attached.

Thank you for your cooperation and for enabling us to reach the public.

Public Star Party at Lost Dutchman State Park - Saturday, March 25, 2016

William Shaheen <wjshaheen@...>

On Saturday, March 25th, we will conduct a regularly scheduled public Star Party at Lost Dutchman State Park from 8:00pm to 10:00pm. (Current schedule attached.) The weather looks very promising. Ideal, actually..

We will be located in the Saguaro Day Use area parking lot.
Please see Map and Directions here: http://supermtnastro.com/maps-directions

We do ask that visitors park in either the Cholla Day Use area or its Overflow Parking Lot, across the road (see link to map above) and not drive through the telescope observing area, in order to avoid the distraction of headlights.

Parking in the Saguaro Day Use area, where telescopes will be set-up, is reserved for club members who will be hosting and bringing equipment.

State Park staff will be present to assist and direct visitors to the appropriate parking area.

Note  - Lost Dutchman State Park assesses a $7 per vehicle entrance fee, except for hosts, presenters and volunteers, unless you have an annual pass, which is good for ALL Arizona State Parks, including Boyce-Thompson Arboretum.

You can purchase a pass at the park, or visit http://azstateparks.com/ for more information.

For further Star Party information and details, see the schedule  here: http://supermtnastro.com/

Revised Superstition Mountain Astronomical League 2016-2017 Schedule of Events (Rev. 1)

William Shaheen <wjshaheen@...>

The May edition of the Superstition Living magazine had, incorrectly, a notice of a star party on May27th at Lost Dutchman State Park.

I would like to reiterate that the star party for May 27th at Lost Dutchman State Park has been canceled due to the lateness in the season.

My apologies for any confusion.

Thank you,

Meet the Astronomers

To our esteemed guests, we've added a page to our website to show our appreciation to the astronomers who host our star parties, especially since you don't get to see them all that well at night.

So, please see this new page at our website: http://supermtnastro.com/the-astronomers
If you place your mouse over any of the photos, it will bring up a brief description/comment about the person.

Most of the photos were culled from our event history, seen here: http://www.pbase.com/supermtnastro/smal_event_history .

Thank you,

Superstition Mountain Astronomical League 2017-2018 Schedule of Events

William Shaheen <wjshaheen@...>

After an exciting summer which witnessed a terrific solar eclipse and a near Earth orbit asteroid fly-by, we in the club are again looking forward to showing off the wonders of the night time skies.

The Superstition Mountain Astronomical League is pleased to submit to the community its public schedule for the 2017-2018 astronomical observing season.

As in years past, our events will be held on Saturdays, just to keep things simple and make it convenient for everyone. We will alternate, pretty much, between Peralta Trail Elementary School and Lost Dutchman State Park. All events are open to the public but note the Lost Dutchman State Park has a per vehicle entrance fee, unless you have a park pass, which is a bargain in itself. And, the annual pass also gets you access to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, as well as all Arizona State Parks.  You can learn more by visiting: http://azstateparks.com/

In addition to the schedule of events that we host, we will also be attending, as guest observers, other star parties here in the east valley, such as the Peralta Trail elementary School and Basis Mesa School Science Nights. Announcements will be sent as those event dates are known.

To facilitate announcing any schedule changes/additions and other information, we will also use the new website, which you can find here: http://supermtnastro.com/

Also, we have established an email address to respond to any questions/comments: supermtnastro@... and you can contact us at that address.

Local newspaper editors (CC'ed) are requested to publish a notice prior to each event. If you wish me to send you a request/reminder in advance of each event, just let me know.

We hope to see you under the stars.

METEORS FROM HALLEY'S COMET: Earth is entering a stream of debris from Halley's Comet, source of the annual Orionid meteor shower. Last night, NASA's network of all-sky meteor cameras detected 23 Orionid fireballs over the USA--a result of comet dust hitting the atmosphere at speeds exceeding 65 km/s (145,000 mph). Forecasters expect the shower to peak on Oct. 21-22 with as many as 25 meteors per hour. Visit Spaceweather.com for observing tips and sky maps.

Public Star Party at Lost Dutchman State Park - Saturday, March 17, 2018 (Weather permitting)

William Shaheen <wjshaheen@...>

As loathe as I am to admit it, the star party scheduled for Saturday, March 17 is in doubt, due to the weather forecast for that date. The weather is predicted to be rainy, according to the current 10-day forecast seen here: https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/az/gold-canyon?cm_ven=localwx_10day ;

The event, however, is normally scheduled for Lost Dutchman State Park from 8:00pm to 10:00pm. (Current schedule attached.)

You can periodically visit http://supermtnastro.com/  to check on the status.

If held, it will as usual be located in the Saguaro Day Use area parking lot.

Tonight's Star Party Status - we're on

In spite of what seems like an hourly change in the weather prognostication, (see here), it looks like we can sneak this episode in before the predicted rain arrives tonight, around 10pm.

It will be partly cloudy for our observing, but, we've dealt with that in the past and had a good time at that, thank you.

So, we looking forward to seeing you this evening, under the stars.
