New York Central USRA 0-8-0s

GREG MAXWELL

Hello,

In 1919 the USRA allotted the MK&T 10 Baldwin-built USRA 0-8-0s. The Katy refused  the engines and they went to the New York Central. Can anyone give me the NYC (and CCC&StL) locomotive numbers that correspond to the following Baldwin builder's numbers: 51847, 51848, 51849, 51850, 51851, 51896, 51897, 51898, 51899, 51923, and if possible when they were received by the NYC.

With best regards,

Greg Maxwell

They became NYC 7449 (in 1919) and 406, 4124, 410, 409, 413, 411, 408, 412 and 407 (in 1920) respectively.

Greg,

51848, MKT as US Govt #40,
returned in March, 1920 to US Govt. to NYC #406, Class U-3a, to NYC #7806 in 1936, retired in July of 1954

51849, MKT as US Govt #41, returned in March, 1920 to US Govt. to NYC #414, to NYC #7814 in 1936, retired in 1954

51850, MKT as US Govt #42
returned in March, 1920 to US Govt. to NYC #410, NYC #7810 in 1936, retired April 1953 nd scrapped in June of 1953.

 51851,MKT as US Govt #43
returned in March, 1920 to US Govt.to NYC#409, NYC#7809 in 1936, retired Oct. 1953 and scrapped in 1954.

 51896, MKT as US Govt#44,
returned in March, 1920 to US Govt.to NYC#413, NYC#7813 in 1936, retired Feb, 1953 and scrapped in June

51897, MKT as US Govt #45
returned in March, 1920 to US Govt. to NYC #411, NYC#7811 in 1936, retired in Aug of 1956.

51898, MKT as US Govt #46,  returned in March, 1920 to US Govt.to NYC #408, NYC #7808 in 1936, retired Feb 1956

51899, MKT as US Govt #47,  returned in March, 1920 to US Govt., to NYC #412, NYC #7812 in 1936, retired in March, 1952 and scrapped in April

51923, MKT as US Govt #48, returned in March, 1920 to US Goft, to NYC 407, to NYC #7807, retired Oct 1953, scrapped in 1954

Looks to me that they were just on loan to the MKT, as they kept the US Govt numbers and were on the Katy for 9 months before being returned to the US Govt and sold to the NYC (and the lone CCC&St.L). Katy should have kept them as they had long productive lives on the NYC.

Re: New York Central USRA 0-8-0s

GREG MAXWELL

Thank you to all who replied to my question about MK&T/NYC USRA 0-8-0s. Don Hensley has provided the information I was looking for.

The numbers first assigned to these locomotives, #39-48, are numbers that fit into the MK&T's scheme. The Katy's 0-6-0 numbers end at #38. It is unclear why the MK&T did not purchase the government engines when the USRA relinquished control in March 1920. It was not because the Katy's mechanical department was unhappy with the design. In January 1920, the MK&T placed an order for 10 identical USRA copy 0-8-0s from Lima and assigned them the same numbers. Before the engines were built, the MK&T tacked on an order for ten additional identical 0-8-0s. The amount the Katy paid Lima and what the USRA was charging differed by only $100. The Lima 0-8-0s were part of a large 60 locomotive. It could be that including the replacement 0-8-0s  in a large equipment trust benefited the MK&T financially as the company was in receivership at the time. Like the NYC's engines, the Katy's Lima 0-8-0s served the railroad well. In 1953 when steam came to an end on the M-K-T, 15 of the 20 Lima 0-8-0s were still in service.

Thank you again for the information,
Greg Maxwell

ALLEN STANLEY

Don & All,

I have been interested in what happened to the USRA locos and why on many lines. Just as additional info on a 6/1919 ICC report for TRRA their 10 locos were shown as leased from USRA.

Looks
to me that they were just on loan to the MKT, as they kept
the US Govt numbers and were on the Katy for 9 months before
being returned to the US Govt and sold to the NYC (and the
lone CCC&St.L). Katy should have kept them as they had
long productive lives on the NYC.

Hello,

In 1919 the USRA allotted

the MK&T 10 Baldwin-built USRA 0-8-0s. The Katy

refused  the engines and they went to the New York
Central. Can anyone give me the NYC (and

CCC&StL) locomotive numbers that correspond to the

following Baldwin builder's numbers: 51847, 51848,

51849, 51850, 51851, 51896, 51897, 51898, 51899, 51923,
and

if possible when they were received by the

NYC.

With best

regards,Greg

Maxwell

Russian decapod question

GREG MAXWELL

I have another USRA locomotive question. According to Dr. Sylvan Wood, the MK&T was assigned 10 of the Russian decapods: #8000-8002, 8005-8007, 8010, 8016, 8029-30. As far as I can tell, these 8000 series numbers were given to the USA 2-10-0s by the Southern Railway. All of the engines with the exception of #8010 show up in Prince’s Southern locomotive book.  After its brief stay on the Katy, #8010 became SLSF #1623.  Can anyone tell me if Alco-Richmond c/n 58867 became USA #1033 then Southern Ry #8010, or is Wood’s roster in error.

Another question is what was the disposition of Alco-Richmond c/n 58839. It was USA #1025, then Southern Ry #8002 to MK&T (US)8002 then the trail goes cold. any help?

Thank you in advance,

Greg Maxwell

58867 did become SLSF 1623 eventually but was on Southern and MKT inbetween, but it is doubtful if MKT ever renumbered it. It was USA 1053 when built, then Southern 8010.

Re: Russian decapod question

Doug,

Thank you for the reply. Richard Prince has the following information in his Southern Railway System Locomotives and Boats:

ALCo-R c/n 58837 became USA #1023 to SRy #8000

ALCo-R c/n 58838 became USA #1024 to SRy #8001

ALCo-R c/n 58839 became USA #1025 to SRy #8002

ALCo-R c/n 58842 became USA #1028 to SRy #8005

ALCo-R c/n 58843 became USA #1029 to SRy #8006

ALCo-R c/n 58844 became USA #1030 to SRy #8007

(ALCo-R c/n 58867, 8010?? not listed)

ALCo-R c/n 58873 became USA #1059 to SRy #8016

Baldwin c/n 48420 became USA #1195 to SRy #8029

Baldwin c/n 48466 became USA #1196 to SRy #8030

If Prince’s USA # for Alco c/n 58839 is incorrect are these other numbers wrong as well?

Thanks for the help,

Greg Maxwell
