ANN ARBOR

Continuing a long tradition of research, education and healing through botany, the University of Michigan's newly dedicated medicinal garden is now open at Matthaei Botanical Gardens.

..

The 6,000-square-foot garden runs the length of Matthaei's conservatory, and is made up of paved paths separating plant beds that are unconventionally organized, according to Bob Grese, director of Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum.

..

"Usually plants are grouped by families or by what part of the plant is harvested, but for educational purposes, we decided to group them by systems of the human body and the conditions they treat," he said. "For instance, foxglove is a common garden plant that can be found in the 'cardiovascular' section of the garden because it is used as an ingredient in the heart medicine Digitalis. Another example is stevia, a plant used to add sweetness to the diet without raising blood sugar, which can be found in the 'diabetic/metabolic' section."

..

Grese says that he wants visitors to understand that this unique layout will not aesthetically look like a traditional garden.

..

snip

..

The garden, which will be a permanent living exhibition open to scholars, researchers and the general public, boasts more than 110 plant varieties that are listed on the medicinal garden's website. QR codes linking to more information about specific plants can be found on labels throughout.

..

snip

..

"There are many gardens that address medicinal plants, but very few attempt to be evidence-based like this one." said Warber, who started the Integrative Medicine program at U-M and plans to use the garden as a teaching tool for her students. "So often, we talk about plants and the conditions they treat, but many haven't seen or considered them in their original state."

..

She said that today approximately 40 percent of pharmaceuticals in the U.S. used to treat human disease are derived from plants or were originally derived from plants.

..

According to David Michener, associate curator at Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum, the opening of the garden pays homage to a long tradition of interdisciplinary partnerships between pharmacy, medicine and botany programs at U-M.

Coca-Cola's Misleading Research Downplays its Role in Obesity Epidemic

The soda industry has been struggling to generate positive PR for a while now. With countless studies pointing to the links between weight gain and the consumption of sugary soda beverages, the public is slowly recognising the hazard and a new Gallup survey found that more than 60% of Americans attempt to avoid the drink.

..

snip

..

The New York Times recently reported that the beverage conglomerate joined forces with prominent scientists for the sake of downplaying the significance of a healthy diet in the quest for weight loss, only to highlight the importance of exercise "in medical journals, at conferences and through social media," The Times reported.

..

The bottom line is that The Coca-Cola Company wants the public to believe that one can drink Coke and still lose weight. Using scientists to get this message across, of course, gives this PR move an undeniably more "serious" spin. Health researchers have reacted quite badly to this reveal, and claim that Coca-Cola is carelessly misleading the public under the pretense of science.

..

snip

..

The New York Times' story revealed that last year Coca-Cola donated $1.5 million to help start the Global Energy Balance Network and contributed an extra $4 million in funding to two of the organisations founding members. What makes this story even more problematic is that Coca-Cola is listed as the administrator of the group's website, which is registered to Coca-Cola's Atlanta headquarters. These ties, of course, show any research performed by this network in an exceptionally bad light. On its website, The Global Energy Balance Network claims that "theres really virtually no compelling evidence" that sugary drinks, fast food, overeating is to fault for the world's obesity epidemic.

..

In an attempt to battle the backlash, Coca-Cola responded to this explosive story in a column in USA Today in which the company's CTO, Ed Hays, said the story by The Times "created confusion." While Hays declared that Coca Cola has "always operated under the fact that a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise are key ingredients for a healthy lifestyle." However, he did not address so much as a single claim that was brought up in the Times' story.

..

snip

..

Changing the discourse and confusing the public with contradictory data and research might work for a while, but as the soda industry struggles to keep its head above water in an increasingly health-aware world, Coca-Cola and companies like it will have to come up with tactics that do more than simply spin already known and proven truths.

Coke to America: Dont Blame Our Sugary Drinks for the Obesity Crisis

By Alison Griswold

Consumers have gotten a lot more health-conscious, so theyre fleeing both sugar-packed drinks and artificial sweeteners like aspartame. Consumer skepticism has officially replaced New Yorks attempted big-drink ban as the biggest threat to the soda industry. So before its too late, Coca-Cola is trying to change the narrative. With the best science that money can buy.

..

Over the past several years, Coca-Cola has donated millions of dollars to the Global Energy Balance Network, a nonprofit that is attempting to redirect the conversation around Americas obesity crisis from calorie consumption to exercise habits, the New York Times reports. Its very clear that around the world the populations are getting fatter, says Steve Blair, an exercise scientist affiliated with the group. The big problem is we dont really know the cause other than, well, too many people are eating more calories than they burn on too many days.

..

Knowledge, of course, is power, and Blair would like to see more power handed to the American people. He thinks we need to discover what is really causing this epidemic and how do we change it. He says, We want to educate the world better on energy balance, so that people have a better understanding of what it takes to maintain a desireable weight, and so forth. He says, We want data. Not just any data. Actual data. (As my colleague Daniel Engber points out, there's tons of evidence pinning blame for weight gain on sugary beverages.)

Coca-Cola caught funding scientists who deflect blame for obesity away from sugary drinks

In July, the British Medical Association (BMA) said that sugary soft drinks should be hit with a tax, part of a "useful first step" towards the long-term goal of taxing a number of products that fuel obesity.

..

The BMA claimed that such a tax could reduce obesity in the UK significantly, and added that the proceeds could be used to subsidise the costs of healthy fruits and vegetables.

..

Similar calls to tax sugary drinks have been made in the US. Berkeley, California, became the first city in the country to pass a tax on sugary soft drinks. Now, soft drink-drinkers in Berkeley pay an extra cent on every ounce (28mls) of soda they buy.

One in three children in the United States are overweight or obese, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Obesity affects quality of life and makes people at risk for many health issues throughout their lives. There are two factors that affect obesity: nutrition and physical activity. Nutrition is generally not a child's choice; the caregivers buy food so children typically can only try to influence buying decisions. Physical activity is every child's choice; young people can be active in numerous ways without there being an associated cost. Opportunities to be involved in organized sport may vary due to income and accessibility, but every child has the opportunity to be active. More barriers exist for youth from under-resourced communities which makes them have a higher risk of obesity than other kids. September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and this is the perfect opportunity to teach youth how to live and eat in a healthier way. Laureus Sport for Good Foundation USA believes that by increasing a young person's physical activity through sport, we can reduce the likelihood that the child will become or remain obese. Laureus USA supports programs that encourage youth to be healthier through nutrition education and physical literacy.

..

Children living in low-income households are more likely to be obese or overweight, according to a study conducted by the Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System. They deduced that low-income families often have less access to healthy food choices and opportunities for physical activity due to various factors. For example, they often don't have stores that provide healthy, affordable food; and their neighborhood recreation areas may be unsafe or have limited open spaces for their children to play. There are great programs that are combating obesity through physical activity despite these factors. These include Wee Can Fight Obesity in Alabama, which provides an electronic, animated exercise program incorporated in PE classes. Let's Go!, a nationally recognized childhood obesity prevention program, provides schools the necessary tools to support physical activity and healthy eating. While there is a nationwide movement to end obesity, better support systems and structures need to be implemented to allow families in under-resourced communities to make healthier decisions which will lead to decreased obesity rates.

..

The sport for development sector is widening the reach of intentionally designed, organized physical activity programs for youth so that there are more high-quality options in under-resourced communities. Some of these programs incorporate nutrition into their curriculum so kids can take this new knowledge home to their caregivers to recommend healthy, balanced options.

Football Hits Could Lead to Hypertension,
Worsening Concussions, GRU Researchers Say

Though ligament tears and broken bones are well-known, all of those violent hits football players take could be leading to hypertension and potentially chronic and traumatic brain injuries, researchers at Georgia Regents University say.

..

They hope players at the University of Georgia will help them prove it.

..

It is well-established that many football players, particularly beefy linemen, suffer from hypertension during the season, and it was thought that the fact that many are overweight or have other risk factors such as high cholesterol were contributing factors, said GRU graduate student Cameron McCarthy. But that seems to go away in the offseason, so those attributes might not be the cause, said Dr. Clinton Webb, the chairman of GRUs Department of Physiology.

..

The compelling thing to me is their obesity and size doesnt go away in the offseason but the blood pressure goes down, he said. There seems to be a factor that is related to the games themselves.

..

The GRU team focused its attention on what are called damage-associated molecular patterns, which would be released during violent hits. The NFL estimates that linemen receive 100 to 130 hits per game, Webb said. The damage to cells releases those factors, which then activate other factors and receptors well known for being involved in inflammation.

..

Those receptors are on blood vessel cells and immune cells as well, according to the GRU study. They have been shown to be involved in inflammation in the brain, where concussions and their long-term consequences are already a concern for football players. One devastating outcome could be chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, which leads to widespread brain damage and for many former players memory loss, confusion, behavioral changes and dementia.

..

I definitely think, related to the concussions, that hypertension during the season could make their CTE prognosis worse, McCarthy said. Or those factors might contribute to conditions that would lead to that chronic traumatic damage on their own, he said.

Data anonymization

From Wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_anonymization

"Data anonymization is a type of information sanitization whose intent is privacy protection. It is the process of either encrypting or removing personally identifiable information from data sets, so that the people whom the data describe remain anonymous. The Privacy Technology Focus Group defines it as "technology that converts clear text data into a nonhuman readable and irreversible form, including but not limited to preimage resistant hashes (e.g., one-way hashes) and encryption techniques in which the decryption key has been discarded."[1]"

Create and Manage Data Anonymisation

http://www.data-archive.ac.uk/create-manage/consent-ethics/anonymisation

..

"Before data obtained from research with people can be shared with other researchers or archived, you may need to anonymise them so that individuals, organisations or businesses cannot be identified. Here we provide guidance on anonymising quantitative and qualitative data appropriately in order to retain as much meaningful information as possible.

Re-users of data have the same legal and ethical obligation to NOT disclose confidential information as primary users. Anonymisation may be needed for ethical reasons to protect people's identities in research, for legal reasons to not disclose personal data, or for commercial reasons.

Personal data should never be disclosed from research information, unless a respondent has given specific consent to do so, ideally in writing."

What User Researchers can Bring to the Design Studio Methodology

By David Travis.

"The Design Studio is a wonderful methodology to encourage
multidisciplinary design, but in practice teams often create design
concepts that aren't grounded in user research. We can bake user
research findings into every design concept that emerges by using the
context of use (users, goals and environments) as a constraint. As an
added bonus, this approach helps teams create many more solutions to a
design problem."

Vitamin C 'as Effective as Exercise' for Obesity Vascular Health

Published: Sunday 6 September 2015 at 1am PST

Written by Markus MacGill

Medical News Today (MNT)

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/299085.php

..

..

Authors of a small study conclude that "vitamin C supplementation represents an effective lifestyle strategy" for reducing the blood vessel constriction that is increased in overweight and obese adults.

..

snip

..

The researchers found that daily supplementation of vitamin C at a time-release dose of 500 mg daily reduced endothelin-1-mediated vessel constriction as much as walking did.

..

The 35 sedentary, overweight/obese adults completed 3 months of either the supplementation (20 participants) or aerobic exercise training (15 participants).

..

Measures included forearm blood flow and responses to intra-arterial infusion of endothelin-1 before and after each intervention.

..

Vasoconstriction to endothelin-1 increased similarly - about two-fold - in response to both interventions.

..

Turning to the other end of the spectrum of physical fitness, a review in February 2013 found that vitamin C may help people under heavy physical stress, such as marathon runners, cut their chances of getting a cold.

According to a University of Cambridge study released in January 2015, a brisk 20 minute walk each day could be enough to reduce an individual's risk of early death, according to new research.

..

The study of over 334,000 European men and women found that twice as many deaths may be attributable to lack of physical activity compared with the number of deaths attributable to obesity, but that just a modest increase in physical activity could have significant health benefits.

..

If you're not sure about becoming active or boosting your level of physical activity because you're afraid of getting hurt, the good news is that moderate-intensity aerobic activity, like brisk walking, is generally safe for most people. The Centers for Disease Control has some pointers:

..

Start slowly. Cardiac events, such as a heart attack, are rare during physical activity, but the risk does go up when you suddenly become much more active than usual.

..

If you have a chronic health condition such as arthritis, diabetes, or heart disease, talk with your doctor to find out if your condition limits your ability to be active then, work with your doctor to come up with a physical activity plan. If your condition stops you from meeting the minimum guidelines, do as much as you can.

..

The bottom line is - the health benefits of physical activity far outweigh the risks of getting hurt.

..

Here are the health benefits of physical activity:

..

Control your weight

..

Looking to get to or stay at a healthy weight? Both diet and physical activity play a critical role in controlling your weight.

..

You gain weight when the calories you burn, including those burned during physical activity, are less than the calories you eat or drink.

The Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children Study (PANIC) carried out in the Institute of Biomedicine at the University of Eastern Finland shows that low levels of physical activity, weaker physical fitness and higher body fat content are linked to arterial stiffness already in 6-8 year-old children.

..

The study sample included 160 children, and the findings were published in Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports. The study showed that better physical fitness, plenty of leisure time physical activity and a low body fat percentage were associated with more flexible arterial walls already in primary school children.

..

snip

..

Furthermore, the study showed that children with weak physical fitness combined with a high body fat percentage or low levels of physical activity also had the stiffest arteries.

..

snip

..

The findings suggest that a lifestyle intervention in childhood can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases later in life. Another finding of the study deserving special attention is the association of better physical fitness with better arterial health, suggesting that especially regular, high-intensity physical exercise can be beneficial for arterial health.

..

The study appears in Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports.

Lower Blood Pressure Guidelines Could Be Lifesaving, Federal Study Says

By GINA KOLATA

September 11, 2015

New York Times

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/12/health/blood-pressure-study.html

..

..

Declaring they had potentially lifesaving information, federal health officials said on Friday that they were ending a major study more than a year early because it has already conclusively answered a question cardiologists have puzzled over for decades: How low should blood pressure go?

..

The answer: way lower than the current guidelines.

..

For years doctors have been uncertain what the optimal goal should be for patients with high blood pressure. The aim of course is to bring it down, but how far and how aggressively remained a mystery. There are trade-offs risks and side effects from drugs and there were lingering questions about whether older patients needed somewhat higher blood pressure to push blood to the brain.

..

The study found that patients who were assigned to reach a systolic blood pressure goal below 120 far lower than current guidelines of 140, or 150 for people over 60 had their risk of heart attacks, heart failure and strokes reduced by a third and their risk of death reduced by nearly a quarter.

..

The study, called Sprint, randomly assigned more than 9,300 men and women ages 50 and over who were at high risk of heart disease or had kidney disease to of two systolic blood pressure targets: less than 120 millimeters of mercury, which is lower than any guideline ever suggested, or less than 140. (Systolic pressure is the higher of the two blood pressure numbers and represents pressure on blood vessels when the heart contracts.)

..

The study was expected to conclude in 2017, but considering the results of great importance to public health, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute announced them Friday morning, saying a paper with the data would be published within a few months.

..

This study provides potentially lifesaving information, Dr. Gary H. Gibbons, director of the institute, said in a statement announcing the decision.

..

Nearly 79 million adults in this country one of three have high blood pressure, and half of those being treated for it still have systolic pressures over 140.

..

This study will shake things up, predicted Dr. J. F Michael Gaziano, a professor of medicine at Harvard who was not involved with the study. He anticipated that it would have the same effect on peoples thinking about blood pressure as studies of about lowering cholesterol levels did when they showed that, contrary to what many had thought, the lower the number the better.

..

It is outstanding news, said Dr. Mark Creager, president of the American Heart Association and director of the Heart and Vascular Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, who was not involved in the study. It will serve as a road map and will save a significant amount of lives.

..

If guidelines are changed because of this study as blood pressure experts expect that they will be an already falling death rate from heart attacks and stroke could drop even more, said Dr. Jackson T. Wright Jr., a blood pressure expert at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals Case Medical Center, and a study investigator. Because cardiovascular disease is still the leading cause of death in the United States, a change in blood pressure goals could also reduce the nations overall mortality rate, he said.

Keeping Young Players Safe on the Football Field

Robot helps football players avoid concussions

By Nadia Kounang

CNN

Updated 3:00 PM ET, Fri September 18, 2015

http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/18/health/high-school-football-injuries/

..

..

(CNN) More than 1 million young athletes play high school football, and every fall Friday night, their hearts and bodies are laid out on the field.

..

For Eddie Canales, it's bittersweet. He loves the game, but he also knows what it can cost. He is the full-time caregiver for his son, Chris, who suffered a spinal cord injury while making a play as a high school senior in 2001.

..

Canales remembers watching video of that moment: "It looked like a great tackle, but if you slow it down enough, you saw at the very last minute, he dropped his chin," and Chris went helmet-to-helmet.

..

After father and son witnessed another player suffer a spinal cord injury, they knew they had to help support players and families in similar situations. Their organization, Gridiron Heroes, was created. In 2011, Eddie Canales was honored as a CNN Hero for his work. Still, headlines and calls keep coming from around the country.

..

A month into the new high school football season, Gridiron Heroes has already received calls from two families of athletes dealing with traumatic brain injuries in California, two spinal cord injuries in Tennessee, one in Texas and another in South Carolina. It also has gotten a report of a death from a spinal cord injury in Louisiana.

..

One of those calls was about Jasil Favors, a sophomore on the Stony Point High School junior varsity squad in Round Rock, Texas. Jasil's mom, Deborah, rushed to the school in early September after a coach phoned her that her son had been injured in a game. She then hurried to the hospital.

..

"He didn't have any feeling in his legs. He had feeling in his arm and upper body," Deborah Favors said. "As soon as we got a (CT) scan, they said he broke (vertebrates) 3-4-5 and they rushed him up to surgery."

..

Doctors told her that Jasil's neck had been broken. He's still awaiting rehab at Seton Medical Center Williamson in Round Rock. He had a tracheotomy to help with his breathing.

..

Until they get to rehab, his mom said, "We don't know if he will walk again."

..

Protecting players' heads

..

Protecting players' heads is a concern in football, from the Pop Warner youth organization to professionals. Eighty-seven of 91 former NFL players who donated their brains to science after death tested positive for chronic traumatic encephalopathy, known as CTE, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Boston University. It's a degenerative disease that's linked with repeated head trauma and concussions, researchers said.

..

Just this year, thousands of former professional football players agreed to a settlement with the National Football League over allegations that the league hid the dangers of concussions from players, and a number of NFLers have retired at young ages due to concerns over concussions and how they might contribute to CTE.

..

Chris Borland was a star rookie who walked away from a $3 million, four-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers, telling ESPN, "From what I've researched and what I've experienced, I don't think it's worth the risk. ... I'm concerned that if you wait (until) you have symptoms, it's too late."

..

snip

..

Dr. Elizabeth Nabel, the NFL's first chief health and medical adviser, told CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta this year, "I'm a mom and have a son who played eighth-grade football. If I had young children today, I would be asking: Is the team that my son is going to play on connected to USA Football? Is there a certified athletic trainer on the sideline? Have the coaches, parents, the players and the trainer been educated around sports injury -- particularly head injury and concussion? What does my pediatrician think?

..

"I would ask those series of questions, then weigh the pros and cons and make a judgment accordingly."

..

Mary Beth Horodyski of the National Athletic Trainers' Association said parents should look for programs that "emphasize things such as keeping the head up during play, seeing what they hit, not using their head as a ramming rod when tackling. "

I was a Division 1 athlete, I am no stranger of being pushed beyond my limits in sports. I know how to push the pain aside to get the set done and to suck it up, even though every bone and muscle in your body is seizing and telling you to stop. I thought I knew pain. I had my first child and was on the treadmill the day I delivered and a few weeks later back to normal exercising. Sure it was uncomfortable at times but I had had worse, I had just given birth, I expected to be uncomfortable.

..

Then I had my second child and had the great plan of returning to working out just a few weeks after giving birth. That was until I took my first step on the treadmill and I thought someone had stabbed me with a knife. Suck it up I told myself, it will get better with each step. But instead, the pain got worse and I could barely put one foot in front of the other and I thought my insides were being ripped out. I made it a whole two minutes that day. And this was the routine until I finally gave up and stopped trying to work out. The pain was too defeating, it won and I became depressed.

..

I work in the medical profession and day in and day out I now hear stories similar to my own. Women who are incredible athletes and women who are just starting to work out after they had a baby, not being able to because of the pain because things are not right. Even after you get back into being able to perform the activity, I could not increase my speed with running or increase my weights with lifting, I had to keep everything very steady, or the pain was too great. This is not the exception; this is how most moms feel returning to exercise after having children.

..

snip

..

No matter how you chose to get back into shape, getting back into it is the important thing. Realizing that you are going to take some time to recover is the most important thing but that does not mean that you have to stop exercising. Start where you can and work your way up from there. My two minutes on the treadmill eventually progressed into full marathons.

Washington, D.C., is set to announce new regulations on the citys burgeoning fitness industryand they could have major implications for personal trainers nationwide.

..

The D.C. City Council has passed a law requiring the citys Board of Physical Therapy to develop new regulations around personal fitness trainer certifications. In other words, the city will now define who can call themselves a personal trainerand who can't.

..

The board has held public meetings to determine what those regulations will be, soliciting input from trainers and certification associations around the city. The board isnt releasing any information about the regulations until it formally presents them on September 22, so it's difficult to know how they'll affect trainers in the nation's capital. Once the board votes on regulations Sept. 22, the public will have another 30 days to comment and possibly ask for revisions before the rules take effect.

..

Thats when the real scrutiny begins and theres a lot at stake for the citys nearly 6,000 personal trainers, the gyms that employ them, and the people who hire them.

Carpe Diem Exercise Studio Faces Tax Liens,
At Least One Elder Abuse Complaint

By Sherri Buri McDonald

The Register-Guard

September 19, 2015

..

..

When Shawn Healey, co-owner of Carpe Diem, shut down the Eugene exercise studio earlier this month, he and the company owed more than $120,000 in unpaid state and federal business taxes and penalties, state business records show.

..

In addition, several employees have filed claims with the state for wages they said they were owed and at least one client has filed a complaint with the state attorney general alleging financial abuse and elder abuse.

..

Shawn Healeys wife, Hayley, has since opened Carpe Diem Sedona, a business offering Pilates instruction in Sedona, Ariz., according to the companys website.

..

Carpe Diem Eugenes website lists Shawn and Hayley Healey as co-owners of the studio, but only Shawn Healeys name is listed on state business records.

..

He responded to Register-Guard questions about his business dealings with this statement via email: Ive been working directly with the IRS for over three years to reconcile the debt associated with these liens. With the closure of Carpe Diem, all liquidation proceeds have been directly applied to this debt.

..

The abrupt closure of the Eugene studio has left a dozen Carpe Diem employees without paychecks for their last few weeks of work and an unknown number of clients out the money they had paid in advance for instruction and training, a former employee said.

..

There are nine trainers, two receptionists, and two former receptionists that I know are out a paycheck, said Megan McGregor, a Pilates instructor and personal trainer who had worked at Carpe Diem for nine years. She now works at a studio in Pleasant Hill.

..

snip

..

Former Carpe Diem client Sandy Jeremiah filed a complaint with the state attorney general alleging financial abuse and elder abuse.

..

In her complaint, Jeremiah, 66, said she met with Shawn Healey on July 27 to discuss the training offered at Carpe Diem and how it might help relieve her chronic back pain.

..

Shawn strongly encouraged that I should pay and schedule classes through the end of 2015, and said that the pre-pay option was what most of his clients did in order to ensure that they could get the times and instructors that they needed, Jeremiah stated in her complaint. I trusted him and agreed that he could charge my credit card for $1,200 for 20 future sessions.

..

Jeremiah said that on Sept. 5 she received an email from Healey stating that the Eugene studio was closing and she would not receive the remaining 10 lessons on her account. She said Healey has not refunded her $600 for the lessons that were not provided.

While the preponderance of research has found that exercise is not effective for weight control, these findings generally have not been communicated to the general public. This crucial part of the public health message is not appreciated in recommendations to be more active, walk up stairs, and eat more fruits and vegetables, Cooper and Luke said. The prescription needs to be precise: there is only one effective way to lose weight eat fewer calories.

..

While physical activity is crucially important for improving overall health and fitness levels, there is limited evidence to suggest that it can blunt the surge in obesity, Cooper and Luke wrote in the International Journal of Epidemiology.

..

If activity increases, appetite also increases and you compensate by eating more food, Cooper and Luke said. Regardless of increasing physical activity, calorie control remains key to losing and maintaining weight.

..

The food and beverage industry has tried to divert attention from calorie consumption by promoting the theory that lack of physical exercise is a major cause of obesity. But in the International Journal of Epidemiology paper, which was published in 2013, Cooper and Luke detail the evidence that physical activity is not key to losing weight.

Data Resources

Latest statistical portraits of how health care is delivered in the United States.

Research Findings & Reports

Summaries of research findings and full research reports

.

Data Infographics

AHRQ's data infographics provide visual snapshots of health care trend data.
These infographics highlight findings from the Agency’s Medical Expenditure
Panel Survey (MEPS), the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP), and
other AHRQ data sources. AHRQ’s infographics are available free of charge for
posting on web sites, in newsletters, and on other platforms.

Data Sources Available from AHRQ

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) provides a range of
data resources in the form of online, searchable databases. Data are provided
on topics such as the use of health care, the costs of care, trends in hospital
care, health insurance coverage, out-of-pocket spending, and patient satisfaction.

Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP)

HCUP is the Nation’s most comprehensive source of hospital data, including
information on in-patient care, ambulatory care, and emergency department visits.
HCUP enables researchers, insurers, policymakers and others to study health
care delivery and patient outcomes over time, and at the national, regional,
State, and community levels.

Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS)

MEPS is the only national data source measuring how Americans use and
pay for medical care, health insurance, and out-of-pocket spending.
Annual surveys of individuals and families, as well as their health care
providers, provide data on health status, the use of medical services,
charges, insurance coverage, and satisfaction with care.

State Snapshots

The State Snapshots provide state-specific health care quality information,
including strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement.
The goal is to help state officials and their public- and private-sector
partners better understand health care quality and disparities in their state.

U.S. Health Information Knowledgebase (USHIK)

The United States Health Information Knowledgebase (USHIK) is a
metadata registry of healthcare-related data standards funded and
directed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)
with management support in partnership with the Centers for Medicare
& Medicaid Services.

Data Sources Available from AHRQ

Largest collection of longitudinal hospital care data in the United States.
National and State databases on inpatient, emergency department and
ambulatory surgery visits as well as information from reports and tools
facilitate research on a broad range of health policy issues.

Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP)

Largest collection of nationwide and State-specific longitudinal hospital care
data in the United States enables research on a range of health policy issues.

Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS)

Longitudinal, nationally representative survey provides timely, comprehensive
information on the health status of Americans, health insurance coverage,
and access, use, and cost of health services.

State Snapshots

The State Snapshots provide state-specific health care quality information,
including strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement.
The goal is to help state officials and their public- and private-sector partners
better understand health care quality and disparities in their state.

Filling the Information Needs for Healthcare Reform

A Meeting Summary of an AHRQ event held on March 19, 2009 with the purpose
of developing a strategy to optimize the availability of information and data for

Data Sources Available from AHRQ

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) provides a range of
data resources in the form of online, searchable databases. Data are provided on
topics such as the use of health care, the costs of care, trends in hospital care,
health insurance coverage, out-of-pocket spending, and patient satisfaction.

Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP)

HCUP is the Nation’s most comprehensive source of hospital data, including
information on in-patient care, ambulatory care, and emergency department visits.
HCUP enables researchers, insurers, policymakers and others to study health care
delivery and patient outcomes over time, and at the national, regional, State, and
community levels.

Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS)

MEPS is the only national data source measuring how Americans use and pay for
medical care, health insurance, and out-of-pocket spending. Annual surveys of
individuals and families, as well as their health care providers, provide data on
health status, the use of medical services, charges, insurance coverage, and
satisfaction with care.

State Snapshots

The State Snapshots provide state-specific health care quality information, including strengths, weaknesses,
and opportunities for improvement. The goal is to help state officials and their public- and private-sector partners
better understand health care quality and disparities in their state.

Select for the State Snapshots Tools.

What Does This Tool Do?

State leaders can use this tool to measure their State's health care quality performance.

The tool will help State leaders:

  • Determine their State's performance on over 200 health care quality measures.
  • Compare their State's health care quality standing with all other States..
  • Identify high-performing States for networking and best practice sharing.

Download full image (178 KB).
[D] Text Description.

What Can This Tool Tell States About Their Performance?

The State Snapshots are dashboards of health care quality measures, providing State officials with State-specific
health care quality information. The goal is to help State officials and their public- and private-sector partners better
understand health care quality and disparities in their State.

The tool gives users a summary overview of their State's performance and allows them to drill down to the individual
component measures of that summary. The easy access to the individual measures helps States more accurately
identify their strengths and weaknesses, thereby highlighting targeted areas for improvement.

Who Should Use This Tool?

This tool can be used by:

  • State health officials and executive branch officials (State health departments, Medicaid officials,
benefit managers for State employees, etc.).
  • State elected leaders—governors and legislators.
  • Nongovernmental State and local health care leaders (professional societies, provider associations, hospital
associations, quality improvement organizations, voluntary health organizations, health plans, business coalitions,
     community organizations, and consumer groups).

How Does the Tool Work?

The State Snapshots are available online. The data are displayed in easy-to-read graphs and in detailed
and customized tables for each State.

What Data Sources Are Used?

The State-level information used to create the State Snapshots is based on data collected for the
National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report. These data are updated annually, allowing States to track their
yearly progress on the various measures. The State Snapshots include over 200 quality measures, which are
grouped into the following categories:

  • National Quality Strategy Priority (Care Affordability, Care Coordination, Effective Treatment, Healthy Living,
    Person-Centered Care, Patient Safety)
  • Access to Care (Patient Centeredness, Structural Access and Utilization).
  • Diseases & Conditions (Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease, Chronic Kidney Disease, Diabetes, HIV and AIDS,
Mental Health and Substance Abuse, Musculoskeletal Disease, and Respiratory Diseases).
  • Health Insurance (Private, Public, or Uninsured).
  • Priority Populations (API, Black, Children, High Income, Hispanic, Individuals with Specific Needs, NHOPI,
Low Income, Older Adults, Residents of Rural Areas, White, and Women).
  • Settings of Care (Hospitals, Ambulatory Care, and Home Health-Hospice).
  • Types of Care (Safety, Preventive, Acute, and Chronic).

Would This Tool Be Useful For My State?

The State Snapshots can be of great value to you in your quality improvement efforts if you are interested
in any of the following questions:

  • Do you know how well your State performs on quality compared with other States?
  • Do you know where your State is performing particularly well on health care quality?
  • Do you know where your State is underperforming on health care quality?
  • Do you know the prevalence of common diseases or conditions in your State? Do you know whether
the trend in prevalence is increasing, decreasing, or staying constant?
  • Do you know how this tool interfaces with other AHRQ products, such as the Asthma Care Quality
    Improvement Resource Guide and Workbook?
  • Do you have access to State-specific quality performance data to better inform your initiative
    prioritization process?

What are States Saying?

"We gratefully acknowledge the technical assistance provided by various teams at the Agency for Healthcare
Research and Quality (AHRQ), including members with the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP),
the U.S. National Healthcare Reports team, and staff in the AHRQ Public Affairs Office." Utah DOH

New Anti-Obesity Pill Imitates a Fitness Workout

Russian and Swedish scientists have tested new anti-obesity medicine on overweight mice that were fed high-calorie diets. In just four weeks the rodents dropped 15-25 percent of their total weight.

..

Scientists from the Belozersky Research Institute at Moscow State University and the Wenner-Gren Institute at the University of Stockholm have developed a new medicine against obesity. It proved successful on mice, and scientists say that clinical tests on humans will start in two years.

..

Mystery of the magic ion

..

A penetrating ion, called C12-TPP, is the key element in the new medication given to mice in their drinking water. Unofficially, scientists call it the Skulachev Ion in honor of the Soviet biochemist, Vladimir Skulachev. In the 1970s his research helped explain how our cells receive energy during the breathing process.

..

Recently, the main ideas of his research were the basis for a project called, "Skulachev's Ions - No Aging!" Over 300 scientists from more than 40 Russian and international laboratories participated. The research proved that Skulachev's ions help fight free radicals and prolong life. As a result, the labs created various anti-age drugs now being tested in Russia and the U.S., and in Russia eye drops for age-related problems are already available in pharmacies.

..

Also, scientists decided to use Skulachevs ions to fight obesity. The C12-TPP ion reduces the electrical charge on the mitochondrial membrane, which is a type of tiny powerhouse for each of our cells. The ion forces cells to work harder and restores the released charge, which leads to consuming more nutrients, and thus, imitating physical exercise.

..

Russians are getting larger

..

Over the last few years, Russian dietitians have been sounding the alarm on obesity. According to the Scientific Research Institute of Nutrition, Russia may soon face an obesity epidemic. Currently, 16% of men and 24% of women suffer from this illness. Already 8 to 10 percent of Russian children have excess body mass. Russia is the fourth most obese country in the world, according to the Healthy Food Research Center.

..

Side effects?

..

Today, there are many means to lose weight. In Russia, for example, the most popular are medicines based on fibers that help one to feel sated from small quantities of food.

..

Anti-obesity medicines usually have various side effects, so how safe will C12-TPP be? "At least it has not done any damage to lab mice, and it only created additional pressure for the mitochondria, the cells' source of energy," explained Maxim Skulachev, one of the drug's developers.
