the accuracy of predatory publishers and journals.

I hope this helps, but I recognize that is my own personal process for journal and publisher
assessment, and that everyone has his/her own process.

Perhaps this will be of use to you:

What are the ethics of the new journal?

Publication Ethics:

OASPA (member list):

http://oaspa.org/membership/members/

COPE:

http://publicationethics.org/resources/code-conduct

Do they have a description for author guidelines, submission, or copyright?

Does the journal list any metrics?

Eigen factor?

H Index?

Impact Factor?

Has the publisher submitted an application for an impact factor (this applies for young journals).

Other factors I may look at:

How long is the list of editors for the journal, and can these editors be found through staff directories?

(I have found that some journals list editors with false affiliations, and this is one way of checking
reliability of the journal and publisher.)

Is the journal content relevant to journal subject matter, and is it relevant? Predatory publishers
sometimes plagiarize journal articles, and one sign of this is that the article content isn't current and
doesn't match the publication's stated subject matter.

(For example, a predatory publisher's site lists internal medicine as the focus, but an article is about
agriculture, and has an obscure title such as "focus on science and medicine." This doesn't happen
often, but I have run across it- and later research always proves that the publisher is predatory and
plagiarizes articles.)

If it is a new journal, is this journal in the process of getting metrics? (See above. If it is, that is
a positive sign of credibility).

Depending on subject matter, does the publisher apply for acceptance into the NLM catalog for other
published journals? (Applicable only for certain publishers).

Other Standards and regulatory committees may be considered.

There are plenty of start-up OA (and traditional) journals that are worthy and credible, but new, and so
checking the editors and subject matter can be worthwhile.

From my experience, sometimes the OA publisher turns out to be predatory, and sometimes it is
just fledgling.

Best regards,

Amanda

Genetic Switch Makes Fat Cells Burn Energy Rather Than Store It

Daily news

20 August 2015

A master gene that orders fat cells to burn energy rather than store it has been found. Tinkering with it made mice lose weight as their fat-storing cells were converted into fat-burning cells, raising the prospect of a gene therapy to treat obesity.

..

snip

..

Not all fat is created equal. Humans carry several different types. White fat is the insulating stuff that builds up around our middles, storing energy rather than burning it. Brown fat, which is found in small pockets around our neck and spinal cord, does the opposite burning calories to produce heat. Beige fat is somewhere in between. It has a different origin to classical brown fat and is dispersed within white fat cells but it also burns calories without us expending any effort.

..

In the past few years, weve realised that it may be possible to turn peoples white fat cells into beige fat. But its not easy and involves doing things like exposing yourself to cold temperatures or doing strenuous exercise. Keliss teams work suggests that there might be an easier way just flip a genetic switch.

..

..

Powerful cells

..

Kelliss team was able to use gene editing techniques to adjust the functioning of the FTO gene in fat cells, converting fat-storing cells into fat-burning cells effectively turning white fat beige and vice versa.

..

The IRX genes were twice as active in white fat cells from people that carry the risk variant as they were in cells from people without the variant, meaning that these cells were super-storers of energy.

..

There was practically no difference just 1 per cent between brain cells in the different groups, suggesting that the impact of FTO on fat cells far outweighs that in the brain. This suggests that, for some people, the activity of their fat cells might play a greater role in dictating weight than exercise or diet.

Results

Our data indicate that the FTO allele associated with obesity represses mitochondrial thermogenesis in adipocyte precursor cells in a tissue-autonomous manner. The rs1421085 T-to-C single-nucleotide variant disrupts a conserved motif for the ARID5B repressor, which leads to derepression of a potent preadipocyte enhancer and a doubling of IRX3 and IRX5 expression during early adipocyte differentiation. This results in a cell-autonomous developmental shift from energy-dissipating beige (brite) adipocytes to energy-storing white adipocytes, with a reduction in mitochondrial thermogenesis by a factor of 5, as well as an increase in lipid storage. Inhibition of Irx3 in adipose tissue in mice reduced body weight and increased energy dissipation without a change in physical activity or appetite. Knockdown of IRX3 or IRX5 in primary adipocytes from participants with the risk allele restored thermogenesis, increasing it by a factor of 7, and overexpression of these genes had the opposite effect in adipocytes from nonrisk-allele carriers. Repair of the ARID5B motif by CRISPRCas9 editing of rs1421085 in primary adipocytes from a patient with the risk allele restored IRX3 and IRX5 repression, activated browning expression programs, and restored thermogenesis, increasing it by a factor of 7.

Conclusions

Our results point to a pathway for adipocyte thermogenesis regulation involving ARID5B, rs1421085, IRX3, and IRX5, which, when manipulated, had pronounced pro-obesity and anti-obesity effects. (Funded by the German Research Center for Environmental Health and others.)

Genetic Switch Makes Fat Cells Burn Energy Rather Than Store It

A master gene that orders fat cells to burn energy rather than store it has been found. Tinkering with it
made mice lose weight as their fat-storing cells were converted into fat-burning cells, raising the
prospect of a gene therapy to treat obesity.

...

snip

...

Not all fat is created equal. Humans carry several different types. White fat is the insulating stuff that
builds up around our middles, storing energy rather than burning it. Brown fat, which is found in small
pockets around our neck and spinal cord, does the opposite burning calories to produce heat. Beige fat
is somewhere in between. It has a different origin to classical brown fat and is dispersed within white fat
cells but it also burns calories without us expending any effort.

...

In the past few years, weve realised that it may be possible to turn peoples white fat cells into beige fat.
But its not easy and involves doing things like exposing yourself to cold temperatures or doing strenuous
exercise. Keliss teams work suggests that there might be an easier way just flip a genetic switch.

...

...

Powerful cells

...

Kelliss team was able to use gene editing techniques to adjust the functioning of the FTO gene in fat cells,
converting fat-storing cells into fat-burning cells effectively turning white fat beige and vice versa.

...

The IRX genes were twice as active in white fat cells from people that carry the risk variant as they were in
cells from people without the variant, meaning that these cells were super-storers of energy.

...

There was practically no difference just 1 per cent between brain cells in the different groups, suggesting
that the impact of FTO on fat cells far outweighs that in the brain. This suggests that, for some people,
the activity of their fat cells might play a greater role in dictating weight than exercise or diet.

Results

Our data indicate that the FTO allele associated with obesity represses mitochondrial thermogenesis
in adipocyte precursor cells in a tissue-autonomous manner. The rs1421085 T-to-C single-nucleotide
variant disrupts a conserved motif for the ARID5B repressor, which leads to derepression of a potent
preadipocyte enhancer and a doubling of IRX3 and IRX5 expression during early adipocyte differentiation.
This results in a cell-autonomous developmental shift from energy-dissipating beige (brite) adipocytes
to energy-storing white adipocytes, with a reduction in mitochondrial thermogenesis by a factor of 5,
as well as an increase in lipid storage. Inhibition of Irx3 in adipose tissue in mice reduced body weight
and increased energy dissipation without a change in physical activity or appetite. Knockdown of IRX3
or IRX5 in primary adipocytes from participants with the risk allele restored thermogenesis, increasing
it by a factor of 7, and overexpression of these genes had the opposite effect in adipocytes from
nonrisk-allele carriers. Repair of the ARID5B motif by CRISPRCas9 editing of rs1421085 in primary
adipocytes from a patient with the risk allele restored IRX3 and IRX5 repression, activated browning
expression programs, and restored thermogenesis, increasing it by a factor of 7.

Conclusions

Our results point to a pathway for adipocyte thermogenesis regulation involving ARID5B, rs1421085,
IRX3, and IRX5, which, when manipulated, had pronounced pro-obesity and anti-obesity effects.

Coca-Colas CEO issued an apology for its mismanaged approach to dealing with the obesity epidemic and promised make the companys research investments more clear.

..

In response to a deluge of criticism over its latest marketing strategy, in which the company employed prominent scientists to support the less-than-credible idea that diet is far less important to public health than exercise, Coca-Cola has admitted that the way we have engaged the public health and scientific communities is not working.

..

In an editorial published to The Wall Street Journal, Coke CEO Muhtar Kent acknowledged that the companys approach to the obesity crisis was poorly planned, and pledged to institute more transparent methods of engagement in the future.

I am disappointed that some actions we have taken to fund scientific research and health and well-being programs have served only to create more confusion and mistrust, Kent wrote.

Group backed by Coca-Cola promotes exercise, not diet, as key to weight loss

WASHINGTON

Leave it to the worlds largest seller of sugary drinks to tell people how to lose weight.

..

Amid a national obesity epidemic in the U.S., Coca-Cola has been quietly supporting a new non-profit organization called the Global Energy Balance Network (GEBN), the primary goal of which is to spread the message that we might be a little too worried about what we eat and drink.

..

The group, which was the subject of a recent New York Times piece, is led by a network of reputable scientists who have helped communicate that more exercise, not less food, is the key to a healthier lifestyle.

..

An inaugural video published last year depicts Steven Blair, the networks vice-president, communicating this very point.

..

Most of the focus in the popular media and in the scientific press is Oh theyre eating too much, eating too much, eating too much blaming fast food, blaming sugary drinks and so on, he says as two bottles of soda, both of which are manufactured by Coca-Cola, are shown.

..

Theres really virtually no compelling evidence that that, in fact, is the cause.

..

The suggestion is a provocative one, to say the least.

..

Many prominent institutions and health experts hold that there is compelling evidence that sugar is, indeed, partly responsible for rising obesity.

..

The Harvard School of Public Health says bluntly on its website that rising consumption of sugary drinks has been a major contributor to the obesity epidemic.

..

The schools website also cites several studies that establish sugary drinks, of which soda is the most prevalent example, increase the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease, among other things.

..

Exercise is the worlds best drug; its just not a weight-loss drug said Yoni Freedhoff, an obesity expert at the University of Ottawa.

..

There certainly isnt any consensus towards the idea that eating more and exercising more is the answer to obesity.

..

But theres another question here: whether its even possible to pursue honest research when its being funded by a corporate giant with very clear business objectives.

..

These sorts of relationships are fraught with peril in how they influence research, Freedhoff said.

..

I would say that its impossible to accept that much funding from a company like Coca-Cola and for there not to be a conflict of interest.

..

Freedhoff points to the Global Energy Balance Networks lack of transparency about its relationship with the global beverage giant as further evidence. If it truly wasnt an issue, he says, then the organization would flaunt, not obscure, it.

Coca-Cola to Disclose Its Spending on Research Into Soft Drinks and Health

Coca-Cola says it will begin disclosing its investments in scientific research and advocacy about the impact sugary soft drinks have on public health.

..

In an opinion article published online in The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, Muhtar Kent, chief executive of Coca-Cola, also said the company would assemble a panel of independent advisers on its financial support for academic research.

..

As we continue to learn, it is my hope that our critics will receive us with an open mind, Mr. Kent wrote. At times we will agree and at times we will passionately disagree.

..

A front-page article in The New York Times this month revealed the financial ties between Coke and the Global Energy Balance Network, a nonprofit advocacy group that contends people worry too much about what they eat and not enough about how much they exercise.

..

Dr. Blair, a professor at the University of South Carolina, went on to suggest that the problem was not too many calories but rather not enough physical activity and exercise, and Coca-Cola has spent millions of dollars over the last several years in marketing to persuade people to get more active and on improvements to parks and playgrounds around the country.

..

On Thursday, however, Dr. Blair posted a statement on Global Energys website, saying he had asked the group to remove his video. I regret that a statement I made in this video has been used by some to brand G.E.B.N. as a network focusing only on physical activity, the statement said. This is not true and never has been true. From the beginning the mission of G.E.B.N. has been to study the science of energy balance, which involves both diet and physical activity.

..

Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University, said it often was hard to determine the origins of research funding, so the decision by Coke to increase disclosure of its investment would be helpful.

The Invercargill man under police investigation for making angry phone calls to fizzy drink giant Coca-Cola has suffered in recent years and just wants his kids back, his mother says.

..

Vivien Hodgkinson has come out in support of her son, Christopher, who has copped criticism on social media after it was revealed he made angry phone calls to Coca-Cola staff last week.

..

Hodgkinson blames Coca-Cola for his partner Natasha Harris' death in 2010. Harris drank up to 8 litres of coke a day for several years leading up to her death, with Otago-Southland coroner David Crerar later linking her death to excessive coke consumption.

..

Coca-Cola, however, argued the huge quantities of Coke Harris drank could not be proven to have contributed to her death.

..

Hodgkinson has been in the media for making angry calls to Coca-Cola twice since his partner's death in 2010.

..

The first time was in 2011 and the second time was last week. He said his calls last week were to ask Coca-Cola to help get his kids back.

..

His mother said on Friday she was in the room when her son made the calls to Coca-Cola. He did not threaten anyone but he was angry, she said.

..

"He said it was time they took responsibility for what their product did and [to] help him get his kids back."

..

Prior to Harris' death, she and Hodgkinson and their eight kids lived together and he worked in the meat works, his mother said.

..

He left his job to look after the 8 kids when Harris died, but his mother said he had been unable to cope with her death and had lost custody of his children, who were now in different homes around Southland.

Nigeria: Is Coca-Cola Shifting Blame for Obesity Away From Bad Diets?

By Chukwuma Muanya

The Guardian

All Africa

http://allafrica.com/stories/201508211558.html

..

..

THE Coca Cola Company and its prime products- Coke, Fanta and Sprite- have been enmeshed in controversy in recent times.

..

Last week, most of the top newspapers and journals in the United States and Britain such as New York Times, Medical News Today, The Telegraph, the Wall Street Journal, DailyMail UK among others were awash with stories on how Coca Cola was funding scientists who shift blame for obesity away from bad diets.

..

However, the Chief Technical Officer of The Coca-Cola Company, Dr. Ed Hays, in a statement made available to The Guardian through its local subsidiary, Coca Cola Nigeria, dismissed the reports but admitted funding research to find solutions to global chronic diseases' crisis.

..

Setting the record straight on Coca-Cola and scientific research, Hays said: "As the Chief Technical Officer of The Coca-Cola Company, I am responsible for developing new beverages, ensuring that all of our drinks are safe and overseeing our scientific research partnerships - and I was dismayed to read the recent New York Times' inaccurate portrayal of our company and our support of the Global Energy Balance Network (GEBN).

..

The story claimed Coke is funding scientific research to convince people that diets don't matter - only exercise. In fact, that is the complete opposite of our approach to business and well-being and nothing could be further from the truth."

..

Hays admitted that the Company funds scientific research through GEBN and are proud to support the work that scientists such as Dr. Jim Hill and Dr. Steve Blair do - because their type of research is critical to finding solutions to the global obesity crisis. "At Coke, we believe that a balanced diet and regular exercise are two key ingredients for a healthy lifestyle and that is reflected in both our long-term and short-term business actions," he said.

..

Hays added: "In fact, not only have we joined with America's food and beverage industry to promote moderation and healthy eating across the United States, we are doing this globally.

How Coca Cola's Obesity PR Stunt Blew Up in the Company's Face
The soft drink industry is in crisis.

The soft drink industry is in a full-blown crisis. Soda sales are on a 10-year skid, and laws are being passed to tax and limit their sales, thanks to a growing consensus among health researchers that sugary beverages are the primary culprits behind obesity and related conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Coca Colas PR tactics have become increasingly desperate and insidious. A 2013 television commercial suggested that the 139 calories in a can of Coke could be burned by 75 seconds of laughing out loud, or a celebratory dance while bowling, claims that were roundly criticized at the time. It recently came out that Coke is using a similar tactic, but with a more serious, respectable veneer, when the New York Times reported the companys undisclosed ties to the nonprofit astroturf group Global Energy Balance Network, a relationship that included lots of money, and even secretly registering the GEBNs website on its own domain.

..

This isnt the first time makers of dangerous products have found ways to claim evidence against them is inconclusive, or have funded supposedly independent research programs that purport to search for the real roots of the problem. The tobacco industry stalled for years by using public information campaigns to create controversy over established facts about the dangers of smoking. The gun lobby borrowed these tactics to promote the idea that having lots of unregulated guns around keeps us safe, even as our rate of gun-related deaths ballooned compared to other countries.

..

Such tactics are sometimes referred to as misdirection, which in the case of the tobacco and gun lobbies has been defined as [altering] the nature of the debate until it is winnable, or at least not loseable. In some instances stalemate will do. If new information arises that shows an existing position to be wrong, move on to another.

..

The mission of the GEBN, per its website, is, To connect and engage multi-disciplinary scientists and other experts around the globe dedicated to applying and advancing the science of energy balance to achieve healthier living. The science of energy balance refers to the well-established fact that what you eat is only part of what determines your weight. The other part is how many calories you burn.

..

This message is particularly dangerous for the simple reason that its largely true, and on the surface its hard to find fault with a pro-exercise message. But the fact that gaps remain in our understanding of the relationship between diet, exercise and health does not mean we should alter the prevailing consensus about the dangers of soda. But that is what GEBN threatens to do; its message implies that if you do more exercise, you can enjoy more Coke.

High schools, colleges and even youth sports athletes have already begun practicing and playing in the fall's most popular sports, such as football, volleyball, cheerleading and cross country. With these sports, and any physical activity, medical professionals advise athletes to wear proper equipment, train properly and adhere to appropriate stretching and warmup routines to maximize endurance and minimize sports injuries on the field.

..

Katherine L. Dec, M.D., a physician in Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center's Sports Medicine Clinic, offers some essential tips on how athletes can avoid injury during the fall sports season, and what to do if injury occurs. Dec is a professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in the School of Medicine.

Where to Put Your Search Role

By Adrian Roselli.

"Clearly you can use other elements instead of a div, and you can nest
them in different ways, but what is important is that you do not put
the role="search" on the form element..."

Outsourcing Video Accessibility - The 5 Key Questions

By Alex Varley.

"Video content is more prevalent and the digital marketing gurus will
tell you that good video equates to good search engine optimisation
(SEO) rankings and more audience attention than just static content.
Even better rankings can be attained through making the video
accessible with captioning and audio description. In many cases it can
also be a legal/policy requirement."

Vestibular Disorders and Accessible Animation (Video)

By Rachel Nabors.

"Many thanks to Greg Tarnoff for coming onto the show to talk about
how the current proliferation of animation in web design can have some
rather sever negative side effects for users like him with vestibular
disorders. In this episode, Greg explains what vestibular disorders
are and walks us through sites that do and don't work for him. A must
watch for accessibility advocates, web and app designers, and UX
professionals. (Video 1 hour 3 minutes minutes)"

Designing Technology with Accessibility in Mind (Video)

By Haben Girma.

"Harvard Law's first deafblind graduate, Haben Girma, excelled in
large part because people created accessible technology. Haben, who
works at Disability Rights Advocates, encourages the development of
accessible services and products. Recognized as a Champion of Change
by the White House, Haben moves us towards a world where people with
disabilities access the same services, on the same devices, and at the
same time as non-disabled consumers. Technology designed with
accessibility in mind truly transforms the lives of people with
disabilities. Through this thoughtful discussion, Haben invites
everyone to design products from the ground up with universal access
in mind. To learn more about Haben, visit habengirma.com. To learn
more about DRA, visit dralegal.org." (Video 41 minutes)

Advocates Want Websites Accessible to Those with Impaired, No Eyesight

By Brian Bowling.

"...The Justice Department has taken the position that all commercial
websites are covered by the law, but it has confused the issue by
delaying the release of regulations, originally promised in 2010, that
would spell out the accessibility standards for commercial sites. The
lack of regulations hasn't kept the agency from intervening in several
of the website accessibility lawsuits..."

Accessible Names - Label All the Things! (Part 1)

By Michelle Williamson.

"...Being vigilant about naming things on your site will help make the
site tremendously more accessible to screen reader users and there's a
good chance it will also help search engines. Use these native HTML5
accessible name properties when available and possible. And when not
available or possible, see our blog post on a few WAI-ARIA attributes

Thinking Responsively - A Framework for Future Learning
By Paul Robert Lloyd.
"Responsive web design changed everything about how we think and work
on the web-and five years on, we're still exploring the best ways to
approach our practice. If we want a web that is truly universal, we
must consider our users, our medium, and our teams in new, adaptable
ways. Looking at where we've come from and where we're going, Paul
Robert Lloyd proposes a philosophical framework for our work on the
responsive web."

The User is Always Right? Wrong!

By Stefan Rossler.

"...We want to watch people using our designs. We don't need their
opinions, they're biased anyway. We want to see what they do and we

U.S. Copyright Office Fair Use Index

"This Fair Use Index is a project undertaken by the Office

of the Register in support of the 2013 Joint Strategic Plan

on Intellectual Property Enforcement of the Office of the

Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator (IPEC).

Fair use is a longstanding and vital aspect of American

copyright law. The goal of the Index is to make the

principles and application of fair use more accessible and

understandable to the public by presenting a searchable

database of court opinions, including by category and type

of use (e.g., music, internet/digitization, parody).

The Fair Use Index tracks a variety of judicial decisions to

help both lawyers and non-lawyers better understand the

types of uses courts have previously determined to be fair—

or not fair. The decisions span multiple federal jurisdictions,

including the U.S. Supreme Court, circuit courts of appeal,

and district courts. Please note that while the Index

incorporates a broad selection of cases, it does not include

all judicial opinions on fair use. The Copyright Office will

update and expand the Index periodically.

The Fair Use Index is designed to be user-friendly. For each

decision, we have provided a brief summary of the facts, the

relevant question(s) presented, and the court’s determination

as to whether the contested use was fair. You may browse

all of the cases, search for cases involving specific subject

matter or categories of work, or review cases from specific

courts. The Index ordinarily will reflect only the highest court

decision issued in a case. It does not include the court opinions

themselves. We have provided the full legal citation, however,

allowing those who wish to read the actual decisions to access

them through free online resources (such as Google Scholar and

Justia), commercial databases (such as Westlaw and LEXIS), or

the federal courts’ PACER electronic filing system, available at

Texas $37 Million Physical Education Program Did Not Reduce Obesity

AUSTIN, Texas Between 2007 and 2011, the State of Texas spent $37 million on grants to help high-poverty middle schools reduce obesity through physical education. The grant program, called Texas Fitness Now, provided grants to the poorest 24 percent of Texas middle schools in 2007-09, and it made grants to the poorest 40 percent of middle schools in 2009-11.

..

Yet a new article by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin reports that Texas Fitness Now had no effect on childrens weight. Middle school obesity rates held steady during Texas Fitness Now, both in schools that received the grants and in schools that did not.

..

The article, written by Paul von Hippel and Kyle Bradbury at UT Austin's LBJ School of Public Affairs, is the largest study ever conducted of a physical education (PE) program. Using publicly available data, the authors analyzed obesity rates at more than 1,150 middle schools enrolling more than 770,000 students per year.

..

Schools spent most of their grants on sports and fitness equipment, according to the article. Although the grants did not reduce obesity, they did increase fitness. The fitness benefits were greatest in measures of strength, and greater for girls than for boys.

..

As a result of the grants, both boys and girls in high-poverty middle schools could complete more pushups and a faster shuttle run, the researchers found. Girls could also complete more curlups, a higher trunk lift, and had a better sit and reach. But the grants did not increase shoulder flexibility or help children run a mile more quickly.

..

State guidelines for Texas Fitness Now predicted that the program would improve academic achievement because through increased fitness, students cognitive ability will improve. Yet the article reached mixed conclusions on the grants academic effects. On average, the grants had no effect on math or reading scores, but they may have improved scores among seventh- and eighth-graders who spent two to three years in participating schools.

Too Hot to Exercise?
New Research Links Obesity to Temperature and Humidity

June 25, 2014

UT News

University of Texas at Austin

http://news.utexas.edu/2014/06/25/weather-activity-obesity-study

..

..

If you live in the South and have trouble exercising during the muggy summer months, you're not alone. New research by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin has found that adults are less physically active and more obese in counties where summers are hot, especially if they are also humid or rainy.

..

The new study, which appears in the American Journal of Public Health, also found that adults are less active and more obese in counties where winters are especially cold, cloudy and dark.

..

Summer weather helps to explain why some parts of the U.S. have more obesity than others. As shown in the study's maps, many of the counties with the people who are least active and most obese are in the Southeast, where the summers are hot and wet, while many of the most active, least obese counties are in the mountain West, where summers are cool and dry.

..

snip

..

Developers and planners who want to encourage physical activity should think about what people will and won't do in summer heat, von Hippel said.

..

"Some planners are more thoughtful about that than others," he said. "A great example of thoughtful planning is the hike-and-bike trail along Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas. It's shady, it's next to water and it attracts thousands of walkers, runners and bikers on the hottest summer days."

..

On the other hand, says von Hippel, there are parts of Austin where the city has just painted a bicycle lane stripe on a sun-blasted asphalt road. "That will not encourage summer activity," von Hippel said, "except among the truly hard core.".

Too Hot to Exercise?
New Research Links Obesity to Temperature and Humidity

June 25, 2014

UT News

University of Texas at Austin

http://news.utexas.edu/2014/06/25/weather-activity-obesity-study

...

...

If you live in the South and have trouble exercising during the muggy summer months,
you're not alone. New research by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin has
found that adults are less physically active and more obese in counties where summers
are hot, especially if they are also humid or rainy.

...

The new study, which appears in the American Journal of Public Health, also found that
adults are less active and more obese in counties where winters are especially cold,
cloudy and dark.

...

Summer weather helps to explain why some parts of the U.S. have more obesity than others.
As shown in the study's maps, many of the counties with the people who are least active and
most obese are in the Southeast, where the summers are hot and wet, while many of the most
active, least obese counties are in the mountain West, where summers are cool and dry.

...

snip

...

Developers and planners who want to encourage physical activity should think about what
people will and won't do in summer heat, von Hippel said.

...

"Some planners are more thoughtful about that than others," he said. "A great example of
thoughtful planning is the hike-and-bike trail along Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas. It's shady,
it's next to water and it attracts thousands of walkers, runners and bikers on the hottest
summer days."

...

On the other hand, says von Hippel, there are parts of Austin where the city has just painted
a bicycle lane stripe on a sun-blasted asphalt road. "That will not encourage summer activity,"
von Hippel said, "except among the truly hard core.".

Palisades has one of the areas several fitness clusters, a type of playground designed for kids to improve their balance, agility and strength. These are not your average swing-and-slide sets; theyre more like mini-military training grounds in crayon colors.

..

Clusters vary in size and complexity but often feature at least six components, including balance beams, parallel bars, sit-up benches and chin-up bars. Unlike the raw wood and steel structures of my 1980s childhood, clusters often come with protective coating to reduce injuries.

..

Part of the recommendations for physical activity for kids is to not only get aerobic activity, but muscle and strength activity, said Dawn Podulka Coe, an associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Recreation and Sports Studies at the University of Tennessee. So monkey bars, where theyre holding their bodyweight .?.?. anything where theyre loading the muscle and the bones is going to help strengthen them.

..

snip

..

Playgrounds have had some iteration of fitness clusters for decades. Lynne Vanderveer of PlayPower said the company introduced its Miracle Junior Challenge Course, a 13-station obstacle course, in the 1970s. Landscape Structures out of Minnesota rolled out its first cluster in 1991 and has since sold hundreds of units across the country, according to product manager Jill Dunning-Harris.

..

Coe of the University of Tennessee said clusters have become especially popular across the country as communities have grown concerned about childhood obesity.

..

Nearly 1 in 3 children in America is overweight or obese, triple the proportion of 30 years ago, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. During that time, schools have cut back on gym classes and after-school sports, making public parks and recreation centers a critical resource for physical activity.

..

Although playgrounds have always been a good place for such activity, Coe said, today there is more of a focus on using the equipment to improve core strength and balance, which is key to fundamental motor skills such as running and jumping.

Will Smith's New Movie "Concussion" Terrifies the NFL.
Here's the Trailer.

Updated by Joseph Stromberg

August 31, 2015, 4:53 p.m. ET

Vox

http://www.vox.com/2015/8/31/9232191/will-smith-concussion-movie-trailer

..

..

The NFL's concussion crisis is about to hit the big screen. Today, the football site MMQB debuted the trailer for a film titled simply Concussion, due out Christmas Day.

..

It stars Will Smith as Bennet Omalu, the real Pittsburgh forensic pathologist who first discovered a neurodegenerative disease called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in the brains of football players. CTE is the result of repeated brain trauma over time and causes depression, dementia, and other behavioral changes.

..

Omalu's 2002 finding and the subsequent discovery of CTE in dozens of deceased football players has transformed the football world, leading many to question whether football can ever be a truly safe sport.

..

snip

..

For nearly a century, doctors knew that boxers who were repeatedly punched in the head could develop symptoms of severe brain damage, eventually leading to dementia. But it wasn't until Omalu examined the brain of former Pittsburgh Steeler Mike Webster (who'd suffered from severe depression and dementia before dying from a heart attack at age 50) that anyone suspected the same thing could happen to football players.

..

When Omalu cut slices from Webster's brain and looked at them under a microscope, he was surprised to see tangled proteins and other characteristic signs of CTE. A year later, Omalu examined the brain of Terry Long another Steelers legend, who'd killed himself at age 45 by drinking antifreeze and saw the same picture. "This stuff should not be in the brain of a 45-year-old man," Omalu later said. "This looks more like a 90-year-old brain with advanced Alzheimer's."

..

snip

..

The NFL tried to cover up Omalu's discovery

..

For years, though, the NFL tried its best to hide the evidence about football and brain trauma.

..

The league established a committee to examine the long-term effects of concussions on players health, but it released findings that were deeply inconsistent with those of other neurologists. Among other things, the committee called concussions "minor injuries," told players there was no problem with a concussed player returning to a game, and declared there were no long-term health issues associated with the injuries. Independent researchers sharply criticized these statements.

..

snip

..

In 2009 after Congress grilled NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell during hearings the league abruptly changed course, finally acknowledging the problem. It's since made some rule changes to reduce the number of players' concussions, put new protocols in place to make sure concussed players are properly diagnosed, and donated money for concussion and CTE research.

Here's What We Know about Football, Concussions, and the Brain

Updated by Joseph Stromberg

September 5, 2014, 9:00 a.m. ET

Vox

http://www.vox.com/2014/9/5/6106851/nfl-football-concussions

..

..

The NFL's concussion crisis has now been going on long enough that it's easy to get lost in it.

..

But though the science may be complex, the basic picture is relatively simple.

..

In recent years, scientists have discovered that the repeated blows to the head suffered by many football players can cause long-term behavioral changes, dementia, and depression, as part of a disease called CTE. At least 50 deceased players have been diagnosed with CTE so far, and an unknown number are living with it.

..

After years of ignoring the issue, the NFL is now trying to do something about it, changing the rules to minimize the most violent blows to the head. But it's unclear whether they'll be able to eliminate CTE from a fundamentally violent game.

..

Here's everything you need to know to get up to speed.

..

Repeated concussions lead to long-term brain problems a disease called CTE

..

Over the past decade or so, several prominent former NFL players have committed suicide after suffering from years of emotional and memory problems. When doctors examined their brains afterward, they found evidence of a long-term disease called chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE.

..

For nearly a century, doctors knew the disease could occur in boxers who were repeatedly punched in the head (they called it "punch drunk"), but awareness that football players were also susceptible came slowly. In 2002, Mike Webster a former Pittsburgh Steelers player who suffered from depression and dementia before dying from a heart attack at age 50 was diagnosed, becoming the first former NFL player confirmed to have it.

..

Although the symptoms may appear during a patients lifetime, a definitive diagnosis can only be made after death, when doctors have the chance to examine the brain and look for telltale signs of the disease. In postmortem exams, heavy depositions of a protein called tau in the brain are one sign of CTE.

..

snip

..

Most players diagnosed with CTE played for many years and suffered multiple concussions, but that's not always the case: in 2010, a 21 year-old University of Pennsylvania football player named Owen Thomas killed himself and was found to have early stages of CTE, making him the one of the youngest cases diagnosed so far.

Modern CSS Layout, Power and Responsibility

By Rachel Andrew.

"...With this power comes great responsibility. For just as it will be
possible for a developer to start out with a beautifully semantic,
well structured document and use Grid and Flexbox to meet the design
requirements, it will be possible for them to stop caring about the
document structure at all. Worse, I believe there will be a strong
temptation, especially with Grid, to flatten out document structure in
order that all elements become a child of the element with the Grid
declared. Making layout simple, but at what cost?.."

ANN ARBOR

Continuing a long tradition of research, education and healing through botany, the University of Michigan's newly dedicated medicinal garden is now open at Matthaei Botanical Gardens.

..

The 6,000-square-foot garden runs the length of Matthaei's conservatory, and is made up of paved paths separating plant beds that are unconventionally organized, according to Bob Grese, director of Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum.

..

"Usually plants are grouped by families or by what part of the plant is harvested, but for educational purposes, we decided to group them by systems of the human body and the conditions they treat," he said. "For instance, foxglove is a common garden plant that can be found in the 'cardiovascular' section of the garden because it is used as an ingredient in the heart medicine Digitalis. Another example is stevia, a plant used to add sweetness to the diet without raising blood sugar, which can be found in the 'diabetic/metabolic' section."

..

Grese says that he wants visitors to understand that this unique layout will not aesthetically look like a traditional garden.

..

The garden, which will be a permanent living exhibition open to scholars, researchers and the general public, boasts more than 110 plant varieties that are listed on the medicinal garden's website. QR codes linking to more information about specific plants can be found on labels throughout.

..

"There are many gardens that address medicinal plants, but very few attempt to be evidence-based like this one." said Warber, who started the Integrative Medicine program at U-M and plans to use the garden as a teaching tool for her students. "So often, we talk about plants and the conditions they treat, but many haven't seen or considered them in their original state."

..

She said that today approximately 40 percent of pharmaceuticals in the U.S. used to treat human disease are derived from plants or were originally derived from plants.

..

According to David Michener, associate curator at Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum, the opening of the garden pays homage to a long tradition of interdisciplinary partnerships between pharmacy, medicine and botany programs at U-M.
