Next week voters go the polls for the Scottish elections and for the first time they are being urged to factor Scotlands obesity crisis into the choices they make.

.

Obesity Action Scotland is challenging parliamentary candidates to sign up to five key measures as part of a campaign called Scotland Cant Stomach It Any Longer. The aim is to ensure the next Scottish Parliament is firmly committed to reducing the damage being done by growing obesity levels.

.

Figures show 65 per cent of Scottish adults are overweight, including 28 per cent who are obese. In other words, two in every three people who can vote next week are heavier than they should be.

.

Although the rise in numbers has slowed, the problem here is significantly worse than elsewhere, and Scotland is only second to Hungary on adult obesity levels.

.

While poor diet and lack of exercise are key factors, Obesity Action Scotland says the problem is too complex to expect it to be solved by individual behavioural changes. Thats where the politicians come in.

.

Established last summer to provide clinical leadership on our weight problem, Obesity Action Scotland believes a few actions could make a big difference. As well as supporting cuts in fat and sugar and actions to encourage healthy weight levels, they want politicians to look at what difference price and regulation could make to the Scottish diet as well as reinvesting revenue from the sugar tax into measures to discourage childhood obesity. They also believe the public sector should lead by example.

Press Release

.

.

JINAN, April 30 (Xinhua) -- A new study has highlighted rising obesity rates among children in rural China.

.

The study, published in the latest issue of the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, found children and adolescents in the countryside of Shandong Province to be much fatter in 2014 than they were in 1985.

.

It was based on a survey tracking nearly 28,000 students from rural schools in Shandong, a predominantly agricultural area, over the 29 years.

.

The students were aged from seven to 18 when they were surveyed.

.

Some 17.2 percent of the boys surveyed in 2014 were obese, while the rate was only 0.03 percent in 1985, according to the thesis.

.

The obesity rate among girls was 9.11 percent in 2014, while in 1985, the percentage was 0.12 percent.

.

Meanwhile, the proportions of overweight boys and girls climbed to 16.35 percent and 13.91 percent respectively in 2014. In 1985, the proportions were 0.74 percent and 1.45 percent, said Zhang Yingxiu, one of the co-authors of the thesis.

.

He said the increase was even more apparent among children aged from seven to 12.

.

The study used a cut-off of Body Mass Index (BMI) -- the ratio of weight-to-height squared -- to define overweight and obesity. A BMI of between 24 and 27.9 was defined as overweight and a BMI at or above 28 was considered obese.

.

The authors attributed the growing obesity rate to the country's social and economic development, as well as lifestyle changes that had led to excessive energy intake and lack of physical exercise among youngsters.

.

"Compared with their parents' generation, today's rural children are better fed but spend far less time on physical exercises," said Zhao Jinshan, co-author of the thesis and a nutritionist with the Shandong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

.

The phenomenon is typical among "left-behind children," those who are left in the care of relatives by parents who are busy working in faraway cities.

.

Cai Shibi, who looks after 20 left-behind children in her village in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, said at least five of the kids were obese, though their families were not necessarily rich.

.

One school boy in her care is 110 cm tall but weighs 55 kg. "His parents work far from home and his grandparents spoil him by stuffing him with tasty food," said Cai.

.

Unlike their parents who ran around having fun and staying fit, many rural children today are couch potatoes, said Zhao.

.

On the other hand, compared with urbanites, who tend to pay more attention to their dietary balance, most rural residents still prefer meat to vegetables and eat too much salty, oily food, said Zhao. "Dietary habits are a complicated social issue, and rural society needs to enter a certain stage of development for its people to realize the importance of a balanced diet."

.

Doctors warn that child obesity can lead to hypertension, diabetes and even cardiovascular diseases.

Study: Medical Errors are the Third Biggest Cause of Death in America

Updated by Sarah Kliff

May 3, 2016, 6:30 p.m. ET

Vox

http://www.vox.com/2016/5/3/11579974/medical-errors-death-harm

.

.

Medical errors kill more people than car crashes or new disease outbreaks. They kill more people annually than breast cancer, AIDS, plane crashes, or drug overdoses. A new study estimates that they are the third leading cause of death in the United States, causing a quarter-million fatalities in 2013 alone.

.

Patient safety researchers Marty Makary and Michael Daniel published new data in the British Medical Journal Tuesday suggesting that preventable medical errors resulted in 251,454 deaths in 2013. If that estimate is correct, the only bigger causes of death are heart disease and cancer.

.

The researchers worry, however, that their number is actually an underestimate that medical harm kills even more patients than we're currently able to count.

.

"Something like 2 to 3 percent of people who go into the hospital are going to have some pretty severe harm as a result," Don Berwick, the Obama administration's former Medicare administrator, previously told Vox. "Australian studies show that the rate might be as high as 12 percent. The harder you look, and the more you study the issue, the more errors you find."

.

It's incredibly difficult to know how many deaths result from medical harm

.

When there is a plane crash in the United States, federal law requires airlines to report that information to the National Transportation Safety Board. It investigates each incident and tries to figure out what went wrong and how it could be prevented in the future.

.

But there's no analogous body in health care.

.

When a patient dies as a result of medical harm, there's no regulator that has to get notified the hospital doesn't send off paperwork about the error that occurred. Sometimes the information gets jotted down in the patient's medical record, but even that is not a certainty.

.

This makes estimating the frequency of medical harm very difficult and researchers generally believe that their figures underestimate the prevalence of harm. Their study uses data from four recent studies, all of which relied on medical records to estimate fatalities caused by medical errors. So the authors know that their estimate of fatalities misses any errors that weren't captured in the medical record.

.

"We believe [our estimate] understates the true incidence of death due to medical error because the studies cited rely on errors extractable in documented health records and include only inpatient deaths," Makary and Daniel write.

.

Still, they argue that there is value to putting out the best number they can find, as it can draw attention to the potential magnitude of a rarely discussed problem in health care.

Elsevier Complaint Shuts Down SCI-HUB Domain Name

Hoping to stop the unauthorized distribution of millions of academic papers, academic publisher Elsevier filed a complaint against Sci-Hub and several related sites last year.

.

While Sci-Hub is nothing like the average pirate site, it is just as illegal according to Elseviers legal team, which obtained a preliminary injunction from a New York District Court last fall.

.

The injunction ordered Sci-Hubs operator to quit offering access to any Elsevier content, but this didnt happen. Instead of taking Sci-Hub down, the lawsuit and the associated media attention only helped the site grow.

.

However, as part of the injunction Elsevier is able to request domain name registrars to suspend Sci-Hubs domain names. This happened to the original .org domain earlier, and a few days ago the Chinese registrar Now.cn appears to have done the same for Sci-hub.io.

.

The domain name has stopped resolving and is now listed as reserved according to the latest WHOIS info. TorrentFreak reached out to Sci-Hub founder Alexandra Elbakyan, who informed us that the registrar sent her a notice referring to a complaint from Elsevier.

.

Elbakyan was also quick to add that several backup domain names are still in play, including Sci-Hub.bz and Sci-Hub.cc. This means that the site remains accessible to those who update their bookmarks.

Sci-Hub

From Wikipedia

.

Sci-Hub is an online repository of over 51,000,000[1] scientific academic papers and articles,[2] available through its website. New papers are uploaded daily after accessing them through .edu proxies.[3] Founded by Alexandra Elbakyan from Kazakhstan in 2011, it began as a reaction to the high cost of research papers behind paywalls, typically US$30 each when bought on a per-paper basis.[4] Academic publisher Elsevier has in 2015 filed a legal complaint in New York City alleging copyright infringement by Sci-Hub.[5]

Sci-Hub is providing science publishers with their Napster moment

A report from Science shows that academic paper piracy site Sci-Hub is not a niche product catering to cheapskates and isolated mad scientists: Its as popular as it is illegal, and its millions of users span the globe, from Tehran to Boston.

.

For those not aware, Sci-Hub is, in the X for Y startup lingo of our days, The Pirate Bay for research. Millions of papers, many of which require a fee or institutional subscription of some kind to access, have been downloaded in full and added to the Sci-Hub database. You can get just about any paper you want with a few keystrokes and, naturally, publishers are furious.

.

Alexandra Elbakyan, the young Kazakh grad student who founded Sci-Hub in 2011, provided Science reporter John Bohannon with six months of usage data which, incidentally, the journal is kindly providing for anyone to download themselves.

.

The stats, which have been scrubbed of personally identifying information, are impressive: There are more than 50 million papers stored, with between 4 and 6 million downloaded a month. There are users on every continent but Antarctica

Piracy site for academic journals playing game of domain-name Whac-A-Mole
Just like The Pirate Bay, Sci-Hub is domain hopping to beat takedown court orders.

We reported a few weeks ago on a popular pirate site for science journals whose oversees admin was being sued by one of the world's leading academic publishers, Elsevier. Elsevier is the same New York publisher that the late Aaron Swartz had noted in his "Guerilla Open Access Manifesto" that told academics and researchers they had a "duty" to free the knowledge they were privileged to read behind Elsevier's paywall.

.

Because of the lawsuit, which Sci-Hub founder Alexandra Elbakyan has refused to participate in, she's been engaged in a game of domain-name Whac-A-Mole in response to Elsevier winning court orders demanding the shuttering of the popular site's domain name. The site allows anybody, not just academics, to access tens of millions of scholastic research articles for free.

Schools Provide Opportunities to Foster Fitness and Fight Obesity

By Jake Steinfeld

Herald Net

.

.

When reports like the American College of Sports Medicine's American Fitness Index (AFI) are released, we can see that our community may not be as healthy as we think. For the past eight years, the Anthem Foundation-sponsored report has provided a reliable measure of community fitness levels for the top 50 largest metropolitan areas. The report focuses on outdoor exercise options, along with rates of smoking, diabetes and obesity to determine which areas rank the best and worst in overall health. And while the report focuses on larger cities, one can put two and two together to figure out that smaller cities would have similar, if not, worse results.

.

While the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue area landed at No. 8 on the healthy index scale, the overall obesity rates for the state of Washington exceeded 25 percent for children and adults. If Washington wants to provide a healthy future for its children, then we all need to work together to make a positive change everyone from our business and community leaders to educators and parents. What makes the AFI so compelling is that it provides us with an overall picture of our strengths and weaknesses and gives us the opportunity to make changes NOW before its too late. Whether it's implementing national strategies such as healthier nutrition in schools or statewide strategies such as Washington state's Healthiest Next Generation Initiative, increasing physical activity options for children, is imperative. If we really want to see change, we can't stand idle.

.

At the community level, I believe the best step we can take right now is to introduce physical activity in our schools. Not only will it help foster healthy children, but it will also lay the foundation for building their bodies, their confidence and self-esteem.

.

The good news? The National Foundation for Governors' Fitness Councils has taken action by helping schools become more active. We are delivering state-of-the-art fitness centers to elementary and middle schools across this great nation. In fact, nominations just opened in Washington state. Three schools that demonstrate innovation in health and fitness will be awarded brand new fitness centers later this year. This is all done through public/private partnerships with companies like Coca-Cola, Amerigroup Foundation and Nike; and better yet, there is no government funding and absolutely no cost to taxpayers.

Physical Activity Research Helps Children With Genetic Disorder

May 4, 2016

CSUF News Service

California State University Fullerton

http://news.fullerton.edu/2016sp/msclip_ocweekly_tsunami.aspx

.

.

For Daniela Rubin and her team of faculty and student researchers, their goal is to help children with a rare and complex genetic disorder live happier and healthier lives.

.

Over the past eight years, the associate professor of kinesiology has been leading Cal State Fullerton's federally funded research program on Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) and childhood obesity. PWS can lead to abnormally high levels of body fat resulting in life-threatening obesity and poses challenges to being physically active.

.

Rubin, her faculty collaborators in kinesiology and health science, students and colleagues at the University of Florida and CHOC Childrens have conducted several obesity-related studies on children with and without Prader-Willi Syndrome. Their research projects have focused on such areas as evaluating hormonal and metabolic effects of exercise and movement difficulties, as well as whether a home-based, parent-led physical activity program improves the motor proficiency of children with PWS. A similar parent-guided physical activity program also was investigated in children without PWS, but with obesity.

.

Her latest research, "Family-Based Exercise Intervention for Children and Adolescents With Prader-Willi Syndrome," focused on 116 individuals ages 8-15, including children with obesity and children with PWS. Children with PWS disorder often have poor stamina, coordination and balance, Rubin explained. In the recent study, youth were enrolled in the 24-week Active Play at Home program.

Levels of obesity in adults and children are rising worldwide. The World Health Organization calls the rising level an epidemic citing sugary drinks and processed foods as the main culprits, along with an urban sedentary lifestyle.

.

A study published in The Lancet named Global, regional, and national prevalence of overweight and obesity in children and adults during 1980-2013: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2013 stated obesity issues were estimated to have caused 3.4 million deaths globally, most of which were from cardiovascular causes. Research indicates that if left unaddressed, the rise in obesity could lead to future declines in life expectancy in countries worldwide.

.

The rise in obesity levels is concerning health bodies and indicates a serious change in human behaviors.

.

Obesity in the USA

.

Data from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) found that adult prevalence of obesity in the US is 36 percent. Arkansas tops the interstate poll at 35.9 percent, whereas Colorado weighs in at 21.3 percent. Southern and Mid-West states have the higher rates with 23 out of the top 25 situated there.

experts and the thought leaders are leading, directing and influencing

concepts of authority will be challenged and reinvented."

WASHINGTON Concussions and football have become synonymous. But as it turns out, athletes who play the perceived most-violent sport may not have the most danger for concussions.

.

At the Knight Commission forum on Intercollegiate Athletics, former United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan asked panelists who were discussing the health, safety and well-being of college athletes to rank their level of concern for concussions in specific sports.

.

Football was not No. 1.

.

Over the last four years, weve had more concussions in cheerleading than we have in football and soccer, Georgia sports medicine director Ron Courson said.

.

Princeton director of athletic medicine Margot Putukian echoed this surprising sentiment.

.

Wrestling is very high, she said. Followed by American football, ice hockey, lacrosse.

.

She also mentioned rugby, which is played in the Ivy League. Soccer was not discussed or ranked on the list for Duncan.

.

Myron Rolle, a Knight Commission member who played safety at Florida State and briefly for the Tennessee Titans, asked the panel for suggestions on how athletes can reconcile accepting an opportunity to get an education by earning a scholarship, but then facing the risk presented given the current state of brain injuries in sports.

.

Theres more that we dont know about these effects compared to what were learning and the risk of participating in sport is the way you look at it, Putukian said. Theres a much higher risk of brain injury on a bicycle, on a motorcycle, on a skateboard. Horse jockeys have 50 times the incidents of brain injury than NFL players.

Re: hi (Interactivity on the Web and Groups vs. Ways of Sharing Content and Making it Findable)

David P. Dillard

This post was shared on the JISC Disabilities-Education list to discuss some methods of making your content known and used in the social networking arena of discussion groups and blogs. Lesson number one is right in the heading which I changed from the friendly HI to a much more descriptive title that lets the reader know what I am talking about and read or not read based on their interest in this topic. I hope that some readers will find useful ideas in this post.

I am not so sure that interactivity is the primary goal in sharing information, ideas, thoughts, sources and resources on the internet. One cannot control the decisions to respond, or not respond to the posts and other forms of writing placed on the internet by you. One can better control finding your content by others who search Google with related terminology.

One method for making ones ideas and knowledge of resources pubic and therefore accessable to readers needing this information is to post to groups that are public and archived so that search engines will find and index ones shared content. This can include lists that you create and own or on topic lists with other ownership.

"DISABILITY-RESEARCH" AND (jisc OR jiscmail)

http://tinyurl.com/zugx39n

Use specific labels in all posts that share a type of content in ones posts so that folks looking for that specific kind of information will find as much of that type of information if they use words found in your label in your shared messages. I label my use of the SITE: command in Google Web searches as "Google Domain Limited Web Search" and in parenthesis label the kind of search I am using. Since most posters in the world do not share links to search results and of those who do, very few do shared results of searches using the SITE: Google command and nobody is using that phrase but me, my content of that type results from a search of that phrase. Hence, Google indexes that phrase so that anyone picking up on that phrase and searching it will find a small library of posts that have that search command embedded in those posts with links to the searches and search results shared in those posts via those links.

http://tinyurl.com/jfg7llx

In Google search results always click at the bottom to get to the last page of results, often a low number and then click on the link at the bottom

********************************************************************

In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 11 already displayed. If you like, "you can repeat the search with the omitted results included."

********************************************************************

In this case one now can see around 170 results instead of 11 and of course share the link to this version of the search instead of the link to the eleven results.

These are a few of the results found with this search

Also instruct your readers if you wish to use edit/find on the resulting pages and in this case search "domain limited" to see the examples of this type of search on the resulting page.

One can create libraries of content on various topics through their own websites on Google Sites and by posting to their own publically archived discussion groups, publically archived discussion groups in fields relevant to the posts and on Wordpress and other blogs that again are public so that their content is indexed by Google as Google indexing controls see fit.

It takes substantial effort to do this kind of work, but if one believes their ideas and content are worth sharing, one will make these efforts.

One can use resources like Yahoo Groups, Groups.IO, Nabble, Freelists, Wordpress, any Listserv with relevant public lists that are on topic for your content for these sharings. Creating your own list(s) will protect you from readers who complain that your sharings are unwelcome because they are off topic or guilty of some other crime against humanity as it is your list and they are your guests. Many if not all of the lists on JISC are public. I own the Sport-Med list on JISC and JISC is a marvelous list service. This list is a very active and a very good discussion group on this network of lists. Consider this link on the topic area of this list.

http://tinyurl.com/hhr7csn

Use the ways in which your information is tagged, use them in searches, for example, and people will find and learn from your shared content. One can even create unique but simple tags that claim your use of a resource, consider the phrase "Temple Summon search".

https://www.google.com/#q=%22temple+summon+search%22

Since for the most part I am the only person in the world describing the Temple University version of this Proquest Discovery database, the "Summon" search tool with this group of three words in that order, a search of them leads to mostly my content. These are some techniques that can be used to put content online and have it read by interested folk by the use of search results that exploit your labeling of your content.

I hope that this helps.

My discussion groups and research guides on Google Sites

Keep in mind that Google indexes content on Google including yours on the Google Sites websites you create and it does not take long for this to happen.

By the way, I spoke recently with a retired professor who now has a small job at another college. He was told by them that they could give him more work if he had a much larger active academically oriented social networking profile or track record.

Now it does seem that such rough stuff and resultant concussions can be prevented simply by administering to the hitter the same results suffered by the hittee. That is, if one is out of the game, so would be the other. If the player doesnt come back for a week or two, neither should the other.

.

I dont believe such punishment would change the game very much, but it would surely lessen the concussion problem.

Judge Denies NHL's Motion to Dismiss Retired Players' Concussion Suit

In a significant blow to the National Hockey League, a federal judge denied the leagues motion to dismiss a class-action lawsuit brought by former players over how the league addressed concussions and related brain trauma.

.

snip

.

Nelsons ruling means the NHL will be open to discovery, which could make public reams of private documents. Such a prospect could motivate the NHL to settle the lawsuit first.

.

Nelson rejected the NHLs motion to dismiss in strident terms. In her ruling, she wrote the league wanted the case dismissed on the basis of labor law even though all Plaintiffs in this class action are retired and are no longer subject to any CBA.

.

Discovery is necessary to shed light on the nature of Plaintiffs claims, when those claims accrued, and which if any CBAs might be relevant, Nelson wrote. If a full record ultimately reveals that Plaintiffs claims accrued while they were subject to a CBA, and that those claims are substantially dependent on interpretation of the CBA, then the Court could properly determine that the claims are preempted by labor law preemption. In the meantime, however, Defendants Motion to Dismiss is premature and must be denied.

.

Nelsons ruling also cited the leagues motion to dismiss hinged on documents from outside the sides pleadings, which she wrote constituted a a cherry-picked record introduced solely to contradict Plaintiffs allegations.

.

The NHL, according to Nelsons ruling, already had lost one motion to dismiss on the grounds of federal procedure rules. Wednesdays ruling regarding labor law set a new precedent and could have ramifications for other sports leagues.

.

District Judge Nelsons order denying the NHLs motion to dismiss on preemption grounds is an historic decision in American sports [and] labor law, Stuart Davidson, one of the lawyers representing the players, said in a statement. We are thankful that retired NHL players will be permitted to continue to pursue their claims that the NHL withheld critical information about the risk of long-term neurological consequences from repetitive head trauma.
