QCTP Height Adjustment Screw
Recently acquired a Phase 2 tool post for my SB9c. I also acquired a couple tool holders that are missing the height adjustment screw. One has a threaded hole for the adjustment stud, and the other has a smooth bore. I have read elsewhere that the stud is 3/8-24, but when I check another stud ( from a separate holder) with the pitch gage, 24 does not check. Thinking maybe metric, the stud measures 9.75mm in diameter with a 1mm thread pitch. I guess for the smooth bore hole, I can make a stud with a tight fit and thread the protruding end 3/8-24. Is anyone aware what the correct thread diameter and pitch are for the adjusting screw? Both holders are no-name imports.
Thanks!
The stud probably is a 3/8 24 on a DOrian Or Alorias (sp) ,. All of the imports I have are metric , but I can't say what they are . Take the tool holders to your hardware store & see what threads fit . Is the hole on the non threaded one smaller than the stud from the other one ? I would think you would want all your threads to match on all your tool holders . A lot of these imports used real soft screws . When I got my set I went down to my hardware store & bought bag of 100 good quality screws & replaces all the dog point screws on the tool holders . If you cant get dog points , plain allen screws will work fine . I also picked up 20 good quality of the large allen screws for the height adjustment & a bag of jam nuts to fit them .

I have SAE down I can tell what it is with just looking unless its smaller that 4-40 . I still have a real hard time with metric . When I'm into metric things I keep my tap & die set on the bench . Andrei's solution probably takes less space , hell you could even hang in on a cupboard door pull .

Quick clarification: my AXA tool holder is a Chinese no name. Should make no difference, unless yours in a U.S. or European name brand and in that case all bets are off.
I checked the threads with one of these, and I highly recommend you have one in your shop because it saved me tons of trips to the hardware store:

Good point . I have a bin in one of my tool boxes
full of different size coupler nuts & jam nuts which I use for
when I have to chuck up allen or longer screws/bolts for modifying
. I just thread them in as far as I need & then lock them in
with a jam nut . Saves the threads from the chuck jaws , works for
a regular vise & hack saw too .

If you can only get plain Allen instead of dog point Allen (or any other head of your choice) I would turn a dog point on the ends. Regardless of how good the screw metal is, it can still burr over in use, and then you have to file or grind a dog point on in situ to get them out. Much easier to have a turned down end to start with.

I used one that a bud made several years back , I wanted to see if I wanted to make one but I spent more time tripping over my fingers trying to use it then its worth unless I was doing small screws , like # 6 or smaller . For allen screws I can do them much faster with a coupler nut & get them all to the same length . For regulars screws # 4-12 if I need to I just use one of my screw cutting wirestripers . If you put the screw in right it will chase itself when you unthread it . You may find that after making one & using it the romance may be short lived .
YMMV

That works well when you need only a few screws modified, but if you need more than a few, you should look into making a "Lantern Chuck." I've got a couple projects coming up where I'll probably be modifying a couple of dozen screws, so I've been collecting plans for lantern chucks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5G0XpiWIR4&t=1817s was the one I liked especially.

Thanks a lot for all the insight. The holders are all marked 250-xxx, which are AXA. The adjustment screw, based on the jam nuts I just bought, are M10-1.0, No 45mm, M10-1.0 set screws at the hardware store. I'll need to pick a couple of those up online, or turn a couple myself. With respect to the smooth hole, holder, I'll need to turn a tight fit on one side of the stud, and a M10-1.0 on the other and do a freeze + heat to assemble. I'll also turn a couple adjustment discs with a knurl outside, and a M10-1.0 inside.
Thanks again,
Greg

I just re-read your message. What you have sounds more like a BXA instead of the AXA size.
With BXA you are on the verge of it being too big for your lathe. I think it was about a week ago one someone in your situation had to shave a small amount from the bottom of their tool holder to lower it enough to center the tool bit.
You might want to consider getting the AXA size, now, before you invest too much in the BXA size.
Anyway, if that is the case, all my AXA information is worthless, but you have the same parts except in M10-1.25 size.
Best of luck.Andrei

Subject: Re: [SouthBendLathe] QCTP Height Adjustment ScrewHey Guys,
Thanks a lot for all the insight.

Subject: [SouthBendLathe] QCTP Height Adjustment ScrewHey Guys,
Recently acquired a Phase 2 tool post for my SB9c.
Thanks!

Good point . I have a bin in one of my tool boxes full of different size coupler nuts & jam nuts which I use for when I have to chuck up allen or longer screws/bolts for modifying . I just thread them in as far as I need & then lock them in with a jam nut . Saves the threads from the chuck jaws , works for a regular vise & hack saw too .
