Hi everyone, thanks for letting me join.I don't own a South Bend but I'm going to be stepping up from my 6" craftsman(Atlas)in the hopefully, somewhat near future & the South Bends definitely interest me but I'm not familiar with them so I joined here hoping to get some input & knowledge on what to look for & lookout for when I start seriously looking into buying.

W.D.Bill, Perhaps one vital bit of information is to ID generally where you live, by city or geographic area. Prices vary from place to place. If not variable by location, then cost of transortation to and from to buy or visit working shops or models wil likely be ov value toward your shopping. Good luck to you. I have worked on repairing a friend’s Atlas. I can say there is a big difference. Check out the files section and get back with more questions. Welcome Bill.
Figure out what you need, first: 9", 10", or bigger.
Old South Bends can be cheap (1000 bucks) or expensive (5000 bucks). You will have to either ship it or drive to pick it up. Make sure you can lift it (400 pounds or so, minimum weight).
The new South Bend from Grizzly is super expensive and not really a South Bend. Might as well get a new Precision Matthews lathe rather than a new South Bend lathe at those prices.
Figure out if you need a project lathe, or a fully operational one. That will affect the price. A project lathe can end up taking months of time to fix up, may cost hundreds or thousands in parts, and may never be as good as a well taken care of used unit.

I would also keep your eyes open for a Logan . Their a
very stout lathe , still supported by the original family . I
have South Bend 9A but I still kick my self for turning down a
Logan 820 for $ 200.00 a year back . I stole my 9a , but deals are
still out there you just have to be on the look all the time .
Find the info on checking the SB headstock spindle
clearances/adjustment & if you do find a SB that test/ inspection would be a
good place to start when you actually go to look for one . Here's a link for one that was posted over on the Practical Machinist forum in December in Traverse City, MI You may want to join the forum

easily sever thousand hours of experience there . The only dumb
question is the one not asked .
