ER40 Collet nut

I'm getting closer to making a couple of ER40 Collet chucks &
blocks . I see a  ton of folks selling the nuts . Has anyone made a ER40
chuck or block in the semi recent past ? I'm looking for a source for
these nuts that are made with some kind of tolerance   involved in the
manufacturing of them . Anyone have any history with these ?

        thanks

Funny, I just mated an ER40 collet plate to a 2-1/4-8 backing plate on my 11" Sheldon.  Need to test runout with a piece of straight drill rod.  I also just got a ball bearing ER40 nut because I heard they were better and I like the idea of it closing without rubbing on the collet itself other than pushing against the two tapers.  I have an R8 ER40 collet holder that might also get a ball bearing nut as they are only about $23 on ebay.  Also have a set of square and hex ER40 collet blocks, now that you mention it.  Most are new in the packages as I have been very busy at work...

IF you want a really good one, get Rego-Fix. They're the originator and set the standard for them. I've got several ER32 collet holders, and a couple of ER25 collet holders, from imported sources, and so far all have been good enough for my skill level. I also have a new ER16 set with the collet holder designed for an M5 motor shaft, and a set of 10 metric collets 1-10mm, that I've visually examined the collet holder and it looks good, but I've not got any way to test it yet. Just arrived day before yesterday. It's planned to be modified to be a collet chuck on a Unimat DB or SL. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077PVBCDT  Counting that last one, I've got 9 ERxx collet holders or sets of collets. Got a couple or more from eBay, as well.

If I ever get the SB Heavy 10L running, I'll probably get an ER40 collet holder and collets, too. ;) I'm afraid I'd have to suddenly get rich to get them from Rego-Fix, though.

Attached is some technical documentation on Rego-Fix ER collets. You might find it helpful.

I made er40 collet chucks for SB9 and SB13, in addition to square and hex collet blocks.  I bought a set of CDCO collets, which included a nut and another nut from Shars. I see no difference in quality or runout. Here is my handiwork.

I use ER-32 because its max size is about the size of the hole in the SB9 spindle (1949 vintage.) I wish I had ER-40 because I use the collets on my mill, also, to hold bits.

I went for er40 because I already had 3c for the SB9, and wanted to de able to hold larger sizes. When I got my SB13, it had 5C, but I decided to make an ER chuck for it anyway.  ER has the advantage of being able to hold material that is undersized as compared to 3C or 5C.

Nice Job . I'm debating if the ball bearing nuts are worth the
extra $$ . I have a set of inch ER40 collets , wish I would have gotten
the metric ones instead . MY thinkin is I need a 1 1/2 x8 ,

 a 2 1/4 x 8 ( I think , I need to re measure ) & a pair of collet
blocks . That would cover both lathes & the mill  . I have a set of inch
3C collets for the SB 9A but just the standard inch sizes nothing
between 16's . I'm also thinkin of gettin probably a set of ER 16's &
that will take me down as small as I can see & then some .  Are the
wrenches all the same for the ER40 nuts or does that depend on the vendor ?

I was reading a guys write up on makin a ER40 chuck for his 9" lathe & he said he swapped his spindle for a 10 " spindle for the larger through hole . Any of you folks know anything about that ?

Which 10" ? Does it still have the 1 1/2 x 8 spindle ?

Thanks Al . I'm not sure why everyone says to get the metric
ones , being able to see the dimensions right next to each other like in
your Excell chart it looks to me that I'm fine having the inch set over
the metric set .  I've been keeping my eye on those collet chucks on the
big A & ebay , still on the fence on making one or buying . Thanks for
the pages . I think when I get a chuck I'll print that Excell page & get
it laminated & hang it near the  machines . A guy/gal could take one of

on the backplate anyways .

I think it's your chart I have on the wall above my lathe,  actually.

Believe I bought the Vevor brand collets.

You'll laugh,  but I needed to turn down the shank on some plasma cutter consumables while waiting for Yeswelder to ship my spares, so I put my R8 collet holder in the 4-jaw, dialed it in,  then used a collet to hold and turn them in the lathe.  It worked...

I did the same thing,  turned the spigot way down to bring the collet right up to the spindle.   Did the same for the 4-jaw.  Figured getting that big weight closer to the spindle bearings was a good idea.

I can’t remember if you have a screw on chuck, but if so, make the collet chuck on the lathe it will be used on. There is not need for adjustment, as you cut the taper while it is screwed to the spindle. You will not get any more accurate than that.
