Modifying an Aloris tool holder
Don Verdiani
Thank you to everyone who replied. I bought a 2-flute ½” coated carbide cutter and lowered the BXA-22 tool holder block 0.220”. The steel was pretty tough, and acted like it was case-hardened, but it did cut. I ended up at 0.020” deep. 0.3” wide cuts, slow feed with mist coolant. The case hardening did some damage to the tips of the cutter, but once I got going, I continued on until done. Finally, success!

I’ve taken some off the tool shank to drop the cutter on centre on a couple of my favourite cutters, worked fine. |

Have done AXA holders with carbide tooling, no problems. |

Genius idea! I’m going to try and trim the bottom of the block with a carbide cutter. If it doesn’t work out, this will be my Plan B.
Thanks!

Hi There,
I have modified a couple of Aloris tool holders using HSS. In my case, I had a couple BX1 tool holders that wouldn't fit the dovetail on my tool post (an Aloris BXA). I have a large 60° cutter and I made a couple of light passes (about .003") to open up the dovetail to make it fit. I had an occasion that I needed to lower the tool block and I just moved the tool post on the compound so the dovetail section hung off the side enough to allow the tool block to clear the top of the compound. Good Luck! -Blue Chips- Webb |

If your tool holder is made of Chinesium, you might be able to mill it down a bit. If it is Dorian or Aloris, it will probably be better to grind as those brands do a better job at hardening than the Chinese do.
Give it a shot. You are only risking an endmill or a couple of inserts on a face mill.

Only solutions I see are to face off the bottom of the tool holder, or grind down the compound (which I am NOT going to do) so the tool can drop down to the spindle centerline.

Joe Pie has a vid where he shows how to work that without modifying the tool post https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mxCvOOHWo4&ab_channel=JoePie starts @ 6:30 . I fell asleep with the TV on youtube & woke up @ 4 in the morning to that part . animal On 1/25/2023 5:54 AM, Don Verdiani wrote:

I use an Aloris BXA tool post holder on my Heavy 10, with great success.....up to now. I bought, and then discovered, that the BXA-22 Universal Turning and Boring Holder is too big, specifically too tall, to work with my lathe. The tool point is about 1/8" above center with the block down on the compound. I touched the holder with a file, and it seems pretty hard. Anyone ever machined down an Aloris tool holder? |

I have bxa tool holders. I have a 13” SouthBend turret lathe. I made all my tool holders including Aloris to 3/4” openings.
I used a half inch carbide two flute endmill And had no problem. |

... and it is the swing over the compound and not the swing over the bed that really matters.

I’ve done these with a carbide end mill and cutting oil. Slow speed slow feed.

They are hardened. You will have to use a surface grinder to modify it. 1/8 would not be a major weakening of the holder.
BXA is a bit large for a 10k lathe. AXA would have been a better choice.
AXA tool post is meant for lathes 9-12 inches
BXA tool post is meant for lathes 10-15 inches
Using a BXA puts your lathe at the low end of the size range. Clearly it has not been a major issue until now.
Just 2 cents

I have not done it, but I have several used CXA holders that milled for larger tool holders. Shouldn’t be a problem doing with a carbide bit. Maybe with a bottle of coolant to spry on the cut. Al
