Yeah I know that you're right but you know how it is when you get looking at something... realistically I'd say by this time next year I'm hoping to be looking seriously at buying.right now I'm still trying to sort out the options so I'm more aware of what I'm looking at when I'm ready.

Don't beat yourself up. Unless you inspect it in person, there is no telling how good or bad it is. Just shrug it off and get another one when the money is there.

Thanks! I've not touched a 9" South Bend lathe in nearly 50 years. Any lathe is better than no lathe, but some latest are much better than others. :)

It wouldn't be as good as a Heavy 10L, but it would certainly beat the heck out of an Atlas! Depends mostly on what you want to do with a lathe. The Atlas 10" & 12" lathes have an MT3 spindle and MT2 tailstock. Through hole in the spindle is about 3/4" or 19mm. From what I'm reading, http://www.lathes.co.uk/southbend/page8.html, the Light 10 lathes had about a 5/8" through hole on their spindle, so in some ways the Atlas would be better, but...

Like the Atlas 10” and 12”, the 10L also has a MT3 spindle and MT2 tailstock.  That page is talking about the max work size with collets.  It takes 6K collets, which allow up to 5/8” material, but the bore of the spindle will take up to 13/16” of material.

South Bend 9’s incidentally take 3C collets, which allow up to 1/2” material, but the bore of the spindle will take up to 3/4” of material.  I regularly use 3/4” material through my 9” spindle with a chuck.

The 10k has  bore of 55/64”. About 0.860.  It also takes 6K collets which go to 5/8”, along with 3C.

I had tooling for 3AT for mine. Probably shop made.

6K are not common but I just sold a complete set (by 54ths).

I’m with Mike, not that hard. On my SB13 that I rebuilt, I put new bushings in the housing and made new shafts, as the wear was crazy from lack of maintenance.  The bronze bushings were almost completely gone, the shafts had .030 worn off the diameter!

These gear boxes are not as complicated as folks make them out to be . Got mine together on second try . First try I mixed the  QC handles . IIRC the gears in the handles face opposite

directions . If you do go for a SB lathe you want to get one of  the rebuild manual these folks put out  . Get you through the gearbox easy  . I think they may be cheaper on ebay .

Making gears is not too hard if you have the proper cutter and a way to index. I have seen people using saw blades as an index. Pretty wild.

It is more than a one day project.

The way I did it for mine, was to drive after work and arrive at about 11pm. Stay overnight in a local Motel 6. In the morning go to the location, pick up the goodies, then drive home and get there around 9pm.

Breaking up the trip that way saved my sanity and possibly kept me alive, as making the trip in one day would have been too risky. First because of the many hours and second because of the weight with a high center of gravity in the bed of my F150.

Adding speed and tired to the high load can easily spell disaster

That looks just like what I'd want,I'm not ready to travel that far yet,I've been seeing 9",10"&10heavys within2 hrs or so of me,just trying to get some specific knowledge before I get serious about buying. The price on this is better than any I've seen near me but a day or so trip will add to that cost.
