Before attempting to pull the dial housing apart I would first apply a good dose of penetrating fluid to the joint where the contact point and lever arm joint the body. This is the most likely problem area. Do not allow the fluid to go back into the body. If that fails, then by all means go to the whole hog. Cheers John B -----Original Message-----

Starrett recently repaired and calibrated an indicator and a couple of micrometers. I thought the prices were probably reasonable but the turn around time was like 5 weeks.

The last Word #711 is easy to take apart. I made a hand puller long long time ago. That's the most difficult part of disassembling it. Underneath the face are 2 screws that hold the round plate and the pinion in place. Long Island has a pictorial of the assembly.
Steve, the indicator point is on a ratchet. It's held in place by a cover that swivels away to release the point. Underneath it is a screw that the assembly pivots on. (there's a long tempered wire as a spring) You could dip the first 3/8" of the indicator in solvent / lighter fluid / and - or loosen the screw a tiny bit. Payson. |

You might check with Starrett. Some companies will sell parts. I
think they will service them, but I could be wrong. If they service
them, they may have the part to sell. One of the youtubers did a
tour of the factory. I thought this was addressed in the video. I
may also be mixing it up with Gerstner.

Hey Steve. Believe it or not, Ronsonol Lighter Fuel. I have not had need to use it on my Last Word. BUT, I have used it on a couple of my 0-1" & 0-2" dial indicators that have gotten sticky & the shafts didn't want to slide as they should. Got the tip from someone who's name I don't remember on the Rockwell Mill Forum site. Apparently, other types of lighter fluid don't have the "oily" properties that this stuff has (thus the oil in the name). It gets rid of the stickiness and does a good job of lubing up the internal workings. I took the backs off the indicators, and essentially soaked the shafts with the stuff. Works great. Greg

They'll sell you a repair manual, but you're on your own for parts. Maybe keep an eye out for the model you have, and see if it's better, or if you can cannibalize one to fix the other. Or switch brands. I've got a couple of 2nd-hand Starrett gauges here, myself, but I bought them cheap, and as far as I can tell they still work. When they don't anymore, I'll probably buy the LSI repair book, myself. You could also check in your area, or any nearby metropolitan areas, and you might get lucky, or at least luckier.
