Opinions on Heavy 10 value

Gentleman,

Always appreciate the collective wisdom here.  Looking at a 1946, I believe 10L with UMD, the stand is the steel type with the U shaped legs. It is a Navy ship lathe I'm told, it has the J.A.N and L.Q.R inspection stamps on the bed in the serial number area.  Other than the "ugly", what would be a fair price to pay for a unit like this?  Asking price is 3K, it has 3 and 4 Jaw chucks, Taper, Radius and Milling attachments, steady rest, follow rest, some misc backplates, dogs, ect.  No Collet setup and no QCTP.  I had him send me a couple pics of the Ways and I don't see an apparent ridge, but always hard with photos.  There is a road trip involved so I cant inspect in advance.  Thanks for the help, have a good upcoming weekend

Looks to be a good lathe, I’d give $2K.  You have no way of knowing if it’s clapped out so the lathe may need $1K in parts and labor the way I figure.  If it’s under power and I can run some test cuts it may be worth more.  Check the drive train, check the cross slide, run the different speeds, listen for any noises, look for missing/ broken teeth.   Hold to your $2K offer unless you determine it’s a running, smooth operating machine.

That seems pretty high to me . It's a older single tumble QCGB . I don't know how far the drive is , but if you do go to look at it take some indicators & stands with you & see what   you can

measure as far as spindle run-out , & hi-low spots on the bed . I can't tell by the pic's if it has the variable speed drive . Those get expensive to repair , check movement of all the drive parts

for play . Make sure if it is a reeves drive that it runs smoothly through the speed changes . Take some material & make a test bar to measure if the head-stock is aligned with the bed &

tailstock . There's a bunch of tubes on what to look for / at when buying a lathe . Take some measurements , do some tests .

That’s too much $ for that lathe, even if it’s in fine condition. Being a single lever QC box that drive the value down.

I purchased a heavy 10 for under $2,000 (3 years ago) that was in great shape.

although, that lathe comes with quite a bit of tooling, might be worth close to $2,000. Be picky, Heavy 10s are out there, find a good one.

Thanks Filson,

I think I'm going to pass, the seller is firm at 3K and his comment back was that he could easily get more by parting it out on eBay.  The tooling is nice, but I could do without the milling attachment (I already have a mill and a shaper), and I would want the collet setup and QCTP which would be added expense on an already expensive machine.

I am entertaining the idea of selling my heavy 10.  Has collets, two lever gear box and modern tool post.  Contact: jbusch@...

I hate when sellers start talking about the value of the parts. Why didn't he part it out in the first place? It's a lot of work, that's why. You did the right thing walking away.

Ok , I don't know what the machinery market is out your way . I try to post about ones for sale in my area , but that won't help you .  You might keep a eye over on the Practical Machinist

forum as they pop up there every once in a while .

        https://www.practicalmachinist.com/forum/categories/south-bend-lathes.25/

they also have a for sale area further down the main forum list .

Mike, thanks.  Machinery market in the southeast is horrible.  I am accustomed to having items shipped or taking road trips.

The problem with Atlanta is that it was not as significant of an industrial hub in the 30's, 40's, and 50's, therefor there are not as many left-over lathes, mills, shapers, or surface grinders, etc. as there are up north.
.
Atl is still not very industrial in this regard today.  All of that stuff is always more expensive and in worse condition when it is for sale in the Atl if it ever appears for sale at all.
.
The scarcity of these items has driven the price way up from what can easily be had in Ohio, New York, Illinois, etc. for 1/2, 1/3, 1/4th the price.
.
Good luck on your search
.
John

I guess you have be in the " I get to take a road trip " mode instead of " I have to take a road trip " in the quest for machinery

Howdy,

Judging from the pictures, the lathe looks more than well worn.

With all the noise about locations, in CA it would go for double, in IL it would be half, if one is going to spend thousands of dollars on a lathe a new Grizzly would be the way to go.  The prices are the same for all 48 states.

Unless one wants the adventure of rebuilding an obsolete lathe, it´s the way to go.  Chucks, centres, wrenches, QCTP, and transposing gears are generally included, may be even a faceplate.

Best of Luck,

OK

Isn't there anyone in the business of filling containers with lathes and other machines in IL and transporting them to CA? Sounds obvious, but there may be reasons why not.
