SB lathe model A 10 in

I am receiving an old SB model A lathe. Model no CL187RS.  I don’t have the serial no from the right end of the bed. It has everything with it     Collets ,taper, tool post grinder,
milling attachment, tail stock accessories tool holders etc.   cabinet stand with bent pipe legs, belt is down drive under the head not behind it.  What can someone tell me about it without the serial no.  Age? Value? Etc .    Is it rigid enough to run a cutoff tool?  I have a 11 inch Logan that hates cut off tools. It has ball bearings for the spindle instead of taper roller bearings and just hates cut off work. Chatter, grab, break, resonate, and just run you out of the room.
Is this what is called a heavy 10 ?   Do they cut well, hold tolerance, do nice work?

thanks.  4jaw

Hi There,

From the model number, it is a "Heavy Ten," non-tool room version
(even though it sounds like it has all the same attachments) with a
4-1/2 foot bed.  The model number is a post WWII version.  Other
than having a threaded spindle, I cannot tell you much without the
serial number and suffix code.  Tool Room versions had a CL8187
designation.  The "RS" refer to bed length and drive type.

I also have an 11" Logan (with L00 spindle) and I can tell you that
the Heavy Ten is better behaved when it comes to parting off.
The Heavy Ten uses sleeve bearings (made of bronze unless it
is a WWII version that used cast iron).  When properly adjusted,
this makes the spindle less prone to movement than the Logan
and therefore less resonance and "chatter."

The Heavy Ten is capable of very accurate work (provided you
do your part) if properly set-up and adjusted.  The value is dependent
on the condition.  Having said that, it sounds like there is quite
a lot of tooling that comes with your lathe and that will add considerable
value.

Good Luck!

Your heavy 10 out to part fine. Even the 9 inchers will part. I use 3/32" wide blades on mine rather than the more common 1/8". Works fine.
