9a Spindle Woodruff Key

Hi,

Does anyone know the correct size of the woodfruff key that locks the bull gear to the spindle?

I'm a child of the metric system and when i measure it with guessameters I don't seem to fall on a standard size ("standard" as in what I can fond on ebay)

Thanks in advance.

Hi There,

The woodruff key used in the 9 Inch spindle to bull gear isn't exactly
a "standard" key.  Having said that, there is a standard key that is
very close and will work.

Here are two keys.  The one for the 9 Inch is on the right (or on top as in the last
pic).  The other is a standard key # 606 (that is, 3/16" wide and 3/4" long).  The
606 will work just fine or you could get a #607 and file it to match.

There is an exact match on McMaster-Carr Supply Co.'s website.  They call it a
"High Profile #9" woodruff key and their part number  is: 90049A418.  They are
a bit pricey at $6.48 for 5 (plus shipping).

Good Luck!

Awsome thanks, McMaster don't really delliver to my country, but luckily the #606 is common enough.

I had a spare headstock that I took the bull gear from, its from an older machine that had the top mounted oilers, imagine my dissapointment when I discovered it had a square key.

Hi There,

I didn't know you were not based in USA.  McMaster-Carr is one of the "go-to"
supply houses for us.  There are other suppliers of "High Profile" woodruff keys
out there.  You just have to check around.

Good Luck!

It doesnt look like they are easily available for the hobbyist here, but I should have a standard size one in my hand in a couple of days so I'm am back in business, thanks again.

Why not take your motor to a local electric motor repair shop and ask them for the correct key?  They should have them by the batch for el-cheapo prices.
